‘Hancock’ sparks $18.8 million Friday

In one of my earlier posts I cited critics indifference to Will Smith’s Hancock, but once again it seems that the public does not share these sentiments and plan on making it a huge winner this holiday weekend. Movie critics lost.

In its third day, Sony’s “Hancock” reeled in $18.8 million, giving the thesp his highest grossing B.O. for the holiday. Smith’s previous July 4th record belonged to “Independence Day” which racked up $17.3 million in 1996.

In its first three days, including Tuesday previews, “Hancock’s” $60.1 million haul is currently pacing behind the $63.6 million cumed by “Independence Day” over the same frame, but ahead of the “Men in Black” films. “Hancock” is playing at 3,965 theaters.

The mainstreem crowd might get enough out of Hancock to keep word of mouth at bay but the films last half hour involving the twist with the Charlize Theroron character just kills the whole project for me. It was a fairly enetertaining film to that point but that creative choice was stupifyingly bad and sucks all the good will it had up until that point. entertainmenttodayandbeyond.com

  2. yeah, i saw the movie yesterday and liked the whole thing. i agree somewhat with the above poster though. still … it was awesome!
