The Associated Press reports that some 150 million 3D glasses will be given away for Super Bowl viewers to watch a three-minute 3D sneak preview of the big-screen animated feature “Monsters vs. Aliens.” While 3D telecasts are nothing new, this marks the first time one has been done for such a large audience.
DreamWorks Animation chief executive Jeffrey Katzenberg called the stunt “perhaps the biggest media-advertising event in history.” He wouldn’t give a hard figure on the cost, but said it “involves tens of millions of dollars.”

Philadelphia rapper Freeway has been tagged to help kick-off “The Rebirth of Hip-Hop” concert series to bring awareness to humanitarian issues.

Shaq has made alotta money over the years and with so much talk about the financial, and real estate markets, is he about to take a lost for this property he so famously showed off on MTV Cribs ?
Shaquille O’Neal has re-listed his Miami Beach estate for $25 million.

Shaq was at one point seeking $35 million for the 19,000 sq. ft. estate, which has been on and off the market since 2005. The home sits on two acres in Miami’s exclusive Star Island community.
The Phoenix Suns star bought the home while he was playing for the Miami Heat in 2004, for 18.8 million. Fellow athlete Alex Rodriguez was slated to buy the property in 2007 before his (now ex-) wife waffled, and a prospective buyer in November backed out after making a $19 million offer.
The listing advertises a gym, indoor racquetball court, tennis court, infinity pool with swim-up bar, and 300 feet of waterfront space along Biscayne Bay, in addition to a two bedroom guest apartment.

‘You can talk about me but not family’
Well I guess this is supposed to quell the rumors about his health, but they will persist until he makes a public appearance and announces absolutely nothing. In the meantime get him a steak with some Bovine Hormones in it.

via Yahoo
NEW YORK – Apple Inc. founder and Chief Executive Steve Jobs, looking to quell rumors about his health, said Monday his doctors have discovered a hormonal imbalance that has been causing his weight loss.
Jobs, 54, said he will undergo a “relatively simple” treatment and will remain as head of Apple.
“A hormone imbalance … has been ‘robbing’ me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy,” Jobs said in a public letter, adding, “Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis.”
Speculation about his health have intensified since Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple said in December that Jobs would not be making his annual keynote address tomorrow in San Francisco at the Macworld conference. Apple said this year’s conference will be its last, with Phil Schiller, an Apple marketing executive, giving the company’s presentation.
Macworld is run by the company IDG, and Apple has said it no longer wanted to be committed to releasing new products at another company’s trade show — and that it didn’t see reason to have its CEO speak at a conference it wouldn’t be attending in the future.
Adding to the speculation, Jobs, who survived pancreatic cancer, has appeared increasingly gaunt at public appearances.
In his statement Monday, Jobs said, “The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and I’ve already begun treatment.”
He added, “Just like I didn’t lose this much weight and body mass in a week or a month, my doctors expect it will take me until late this Spring to regain it.”
The company’s board released a statement separately, saying, “Apple is very lucky to have Steve as its leader and CEO, and he deserves our complete and unwavering support during his recuperation. He most certainly has that from Apple and its Board.”

You’ve seen her most recently in E-40 ft. Akon’s “Wake Up”, Jamie Foxx ft. NeYo’s- “She got it” (remix) and NeYo’s “Miss Independent”. Daphne Joy is that Filipino/Puerto Rican honey with the covergirl face and all the right moves. Modeling and music videos are good but Daphne’s real goals are television and acting. She is done a few TV shows and has a role in a Charles Murphy film called “Frankenhood” coming out in 2009. On the experience Daphne says…
I had never taken acting seriously until that point. I was nervous, yet excited and it turned out really well. This experience made me more secure with my acting skills and was more challenging than the videos.
Hopefully we will be seeing more of Daphne this year. You can give her a shout at her MySpace.
Enjoy.

Police in Oakland, CA are reeling from footage that show’s a BART-police officer fatally shooting an unarmed suspect point blank in the head. The officer had the “suspect” apprehended and restrained when he simply drew his pistol and shot him once in the head. The deceased man, Omar Grant was a twenty-two year old innocent victim of the persistent abuses that “citizens” are subject to in this nation’s inner cities. Something has to be done to protect the people from rogue officers. They can’t continue to get away with MURDER.

I’m not 100% sure if this is going to be a side project, or if this is just a one off experiment, but Lupe (or rather, Percival Fats) is now fronting a rock band he is calling Japanese Cartoon, and is singing in a British accent.
Lu has been speaking in code lately on Twitter (with the exception of giving me my new moniker “Leaky”) about his latest recordings, so maybe this is what he was hinting at. Check it out for yourself.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Ben Zimmer, executive producer of a Web site and software package called the Visual Thesaurus, was seeking the earliest use of the phrase “you’re not the boss of me.” Using a newspaper database, he had found a reference from 1953.
But while using Google’s book search recently, he found the phrase in a short story contained in “The Church,” a periodical published in 1883 and scanned from the Bodleian Library at Oxford.
Ever since Google began scanning printed books four years ago, scholars and others with specialized interests have been able to tap a trove of information that had been locked away on the dusty shelves of libraries and in antiquarian bookstores.
According to Dan Clancy, the engineering director for Google book search, every month users view at least 10 pages of more than half of the one million out-of-copyright books that Google has scanned into its servers. Read more…

Jan. 2 (Bloomberg) — President-elect Barack Obama will probably tear down long-standing barriers between the U.S.’s civilian and military space programs to speed up a mission to the moon amid the prospect of a new space race with China.
Obama’s transition team is considering a collaboration between the Defense Department and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration because military rockets may be cheaper and ready sooner than the space agency’s planned launch vehicle, which isn’t slated to fly until 2015, according to people who’ve discussed the idea with the Obama team.
The potential change comes as Pentagon concerns are rising over China’s space ambitions because of what is perceived as an eventual threat to U.S. defense satellites, the lofty battlefield eyes of the military. Read more…

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) – Thousands of Israeli troops backed by tanks and helicopter gunships surrounded Gaza’s largest city and fought militants at close range Sunday, the first full day of an overwhelming ground offensive in the coastal territory.
Israel said it has inflicted a heavy blow against Hamas as it expands a weeklong offensive meant to stop rocket fire on southern Israel. But spiraling civilian casualties among Palestinians fueled an international outcry, even as the U.S. blocked approval of a U.N. Security Council statement Saturday night calling for an immediate cease-fire.
Israel’s ground forces moved in after nightfall Saturday following hours of intense, fiery artillery shelling to clear the way, and Hamas warned that its fighters would turn Gaza into an Israeli “graveyard.”
On Sunday, Israeli soldiers fought primarily in open areas in the launching zones used by Gaza’s militants to send rockets raining down on Israeli cities. As the troops in three brigade-size formations moved in, residents of those Israeli cities began cautiously emerging from bomb shelters in hopes that the rocket fire would taper off.
|
Backing up the troops, mobile artillery units fired shells that exploded in veils of white smoke over Gaza’s urban skyline. Tanks pushed south of Gaza City as deep as the abandoned settlement of Netzarim, which Israel left along with other communities when it pulled out of Gaza in 2005.
That effectively cut off Gaza City, the territory’s largest population center with some 400,000 residents, from the rest of Gaza to the south.
Israel’s military chief said Hamas fighters were trying to draw soldiers deeper into Gaza’s sprawling, densely packed urban areas, where the military said militants were shielding themselves behind civilians. Read more…

More than sever years after 9/11, the agonizing work of identifying the dead continues, with a very large question still unresolved: what to do with the remains of the perpetrators. Grappling with that question is a group of coroners, medical examiners and grieving victims’ family members–all of whom feel they have a strong personal stake in the tiny fragments of tissue and bone from the 19 Al-Qaeda hijackers.

Some of the most iconic photographs of Teddy Roosevelt, one of the first conservationists in American politics, show the president posing companionably with the prizes of his trophy hunts. An elephant felled in Africa in 1909 points its tusks skyward; a Cape buffalo, crowned with horns in the shape of a handlebar mustache, slumps in a Kenyan swamp. In North America, he stalked deer, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep and elk, which he called “lordly game” for their majestic antlers. What’s remarkable about these photographs is not that they depict a hunter who was also naturalist John Muir‘s staunchest political ally. It’s that just 100 years after his expeditions, many of the kind of magnificent trophies he routinely captured are becoming rare. Read more…

Young Buck, Rick Ross and Lil Scrappy just moved to Massachusetts! Okay, just kidding. But they may want to after reading this article – it’s pretty long, so to summarize, the city of Somerset, Massachusetts has decriminalized marijuana. Among the highlights:
- those caught with pot aren’t required to identify themselves
- those caught with an ounce or less of marijuana will be charged only with a criminal offense and fined $100
- hashish and other drugs with THC are also decriminalized
- schools are authorized but not required to suspend or expel students for marijuana possession
- marijuana users will also be able to avoid citations for public use, unlike alcohol
According to the article, local law enforcement officials “strongly opposed” the new law. The county’s District Attorney Sam Sutter stated that four murders in Bristol County this year were related to marijuana possession, but most people I know who smoke weed just sit around and watch TV & get the munchies, not kill people.

Power Twitter moves Twitter Search
, inconveniently located on a different subdomain, right into the Twitter site itself. You can also just search a single user’s updates from that user’s Twitter page. Twitter should have long ago integrated a search box directly onto the logged-in Twitter home page. They haven’t, but Power Twitter fixes this.
Power Twitter also fixes the @replies feature, which currently only shows Twitter messages directed to you that begin with @[yourusername]. With Power Twitter you see all messages that contain your user name, fixing a big hole on Twitter. Read more…
Is Bloomberg sending the right message by siding with Israel in the middle of conflict?
via ABC
NEW YORK — New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is heading to Israel along with police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and New York Rep. Gary Ackerman.
Spokesman Andrew Brent says the mayor “is going in order to show his support for Israel.”
The trip comes as Israel launches a ground offensive in Gaza following eight days of punishing airstrikes that failed to halt militant rocket attacks on Israel.
Bloomberg is scheduled to spend Sunday meeting with the mayors of Sderot and Ashkelon and with New Yorkers who have moved to Israel. He’s expected to be back in New York by Monday morning
The mayor has already voiced his support for Israel in recent days, saying he believes Israel has a right to defend itself.

NEWARK — The murder rate dropped more than 30 percent here last year, but that is little comfort to Preisy Ragin, 29.
On Halloween, Mr. Ragin’s cousin Lamar Ragin, 27, was shot and killed at the Pilgrim Baptist Village apartment complex when he went to pick up his 8-year-old sister, who was dressed as Cinderella to go trick-or-treating. Police charged a 21-year-old Newark man with the murder.
“Losing my cousin still hurts me,” Mr. Ragin said.
Newark recorded 67 homicides in 2008, according to the police, the fewest since 2002, when there were 65. In 2007, there were 97 homicides; in 2006, just over 100.
City officials and community leaders credit new police strategies for the declining murder rate. The yearly total is still higher, though, than was hoped for at midyear, when the city was on pace to match its lowest homicide totals in a generation. Read more…

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — Gertrude Baines, a 114-year-old California resident, will likely be crowned the world’s oldest woman, according to the organization that keeps track of such honors.
The previous oldest woman was Maria de Jesus, who died this week in Portugal at age 115, Guinness World Records said.
Baines — born to former slaves in a small town south of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1894 — now lives in a Los Angeles nursing home.
Baines appeared cheerful and talkative when the Los Angeles Times interviewed her in November as she cast her vote for Barack Obama for president, whom she said she supported because “he’s for the colored people.”
“I’m glad we’re getting a colored man in there,” she said.
Baines apparently prefers using the older term for her race. She was well into her 70s when “African-American” became the common reference in the United States. Watch Baines speak to CNN ![]()

(CNN) — NASA’s Mars rovers are celebrating their fifth birthday on the Red Planet, exceeding their original life span by four years and nine months, with no end in sight to their history-making work.
The rover Spirit landed January 3, 2004, with Opportunity touching down 21 days later.
NASA said the rovers had made important discoveries about the wet and violent conditions on ancient Mars.
They had returned 250,000 images, covered more than 21 kilometers (13 miles), climbed a mountain, descended into craters, struggled with sand traps and ageing hardware and survived dust storms, NASA said.
“These rovers are incredibly resilient considering the extreme environment the hardware experiences every day,” said John Callas, Jet Propulsion Laboratory project manager for Spirit and Opportunity. Read more…

LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Everyone caught up in the scandal of accused Wall Street swindler Bernard Madoff wants to know where the money is.
Madoff, who authorities say confessed to losing $50 billion in “a giant Ponzi scheme,” has given a list of his assets, liabilities and property to U.S. regulators.
But the thousands duped, from the beach cities of Florida to yacht clubs of the Mediterranean to Hollywood and Manhattan, may never see it. And judging by the scandals involving Bayou Group hedge fund, WorldCom and Adelphia Communications, any money they may see down the road will likely be a fraction of what they invested.
“We have received many calls from people and everyone is saying ‘where did the money go?’ because he obviously didn’t use it all,” said Craig Stein, an attorney in Boca Raton, Florida.

Prince is planning to release three new albums in 2009.
The singer says he has almost completed two solo albums, tentatively titled ‘MPLSOUND’ and ‘Lotus Flower’, as well as a record with his protégé Bria Valente called ‘Elixir’.
All three albums are likely to be released by Prince independently, with the LA Times reporting that the star is in negotiations with a major US retailer to distribute physical copies of the music.
‘MPLSOUND’ allegedly features a guest appearance by Q-Tip, and Prince says the electro-tinged album sees him experiment with “new ways of recording”. ‘Lotus Plant’, which was previewed on US Radio station Indie 103.1 in December, is said to be a more guitar-based record.
Speaking of ‘Elixir’, his collaboration with Valente, Prince revealed that the music is “nasty, but it’s not dirty”. He also compared Valente to Sade.
Prince previewed new song ‘There Will Never B Another 1 Like Me’ online on December 22. The track appeared on mplsound.com, although the website is currently inactive.
