In honor of Black History Month, Madame Tussauds Las Vegas unveiled Denzel Washington on Thursday as the newest addition to the wax museum family.
The Academy Award-winning actor’s work has been celebrated for his portrayals of real-life leaders like Malcolm X.
The new statue is the centerpiece of a Black History Month exhibit honoring significant African-American figures in American history, from Michael Jordan and Jamie Foxx to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Oprah Winfrey.
“We tried to take the figures that made more of a significance in the African-American community,” Madame Tussauds’ consumer sales manager Kurt Moseley said. “Everyone in here is pretty much famous in their own right.”
The museum unveiled the Jamie Foxx figure for Black History Month last year and made him a part of the exhibit again this year. It’s featured among 11 other figures, including President Obama.
The museum is home to more than 100 figures in American history, each valued at more than $300,000. The Black History Month exhibit, in the “Spirit of America” room, will be on display until the end of the month.

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) — A pair of identical twins escaped being convicted and hanged on drugs charges in Malaysia, due to confusion over which one of them was the culprit, reports said on Saturday. The 27-year-old twins, R. Sathis Raj and Sabarish Raj, had been charged with trafficking 166 kilos of cannabis and 1.7 kilos of raw opium in 2003. But police had trouble identifying which one was in possession of the drugs. “This is a very unique case as they are identical twins.
Even the DNA evidence could not prove anything as the DNA could be either Sathis’ or Sabarish’s,” said High Court judge Zaharah Ibrahim. “I can’t be calling the wrong twin to enter his defence. I can’t be sending the wrong person to the gallows,” she said according to the New Straits Times as she acquitted the pair. The court heard that one of the twins was caught taking a car load of drugs to a house in suburban Kuala Lumpur. After he was apprehended the other twin arrived at the house and was also arrested. “It is clear that the first twin who was caught was the only one who had access to the house. Therefore, it is impossible for him not to know what was inside the bags,” the judge said according to the daily.
However, she said there was reasonable doubt as to which twin had been arrested first. The brothers cried and embraced family members in the court room when the verdict was handed down.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – R&B star Chris Brown, who was arrested last weekend on suspicion of attacking a woman widely believed to be the pop star Rihanna, said on Sunday he was “sorry and saddened” about the incident, and was seeking counseling.
The 19-year-old performer of such U.S. chart-toppers as “Run It!” and “Forever” has been in hiding since the alleged fracas with his girlfriend in a rented Lamborghini.
He hired a public relations company that specializes in crisis management to issue a five-sentence statement in which he also said many media and blog reports have been wrong.
“Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired,” he said. “I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God’s help, to emerging a better person.”
He did not mention his father, who was quoted on Friday as telling People magazine that his son was “very remorseful.”
Police and prosecutors have not officially disclosed that Rihanna was the victim of Brown’s attack just after midnight on February 8. But unidentified police sources told the Los Angeles Times that Rihanna was the victim, and numerous media outlets have reported the same information.
Brown turned himself in to police, and he was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats against a woman. The Los Angeles Police Department is still investigating, and a spokeswoman for the L.A. District Attorney’s Office said a decision has not yet been made on whether to file charges.
Celebrity websites and magazines have reported that the incident happened shortly after Brown left a Beverly Hills party with Rihanna as his passenger. The 20-year-old native of Barbados suffered bruises on her face and a split lip, according to several reports.
Brown added in his statement: “Much of what has been speculated or reported on blogs and/or reported in the media is wrong. While I would like to be able to talk about this more, until the legal issues are resolved, this is all I can say except that I have not written any messages or made any posts to Facebook, on blogs or any place else. Those posts or writings under my name are frauds.”
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, many of Brown’s showbiz comrades have defended him. Most recently, hip-hop star Kanye West said, “Can’t we give Chris a break?” during a taping of VH1′s “Storytellers” on Friday.

(BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.) A stunning-looking and strong-sounding Whitney Houston made a triumphant return to the stage at a pre-Grammy party honoring her mentor, music mogul Clive Davis.
“I’ve got it, I’ve got it!” Houston, looking glamorous in a skintight leopard dress, sang early Sunday morning as she belted a line from one of her classic hits, “I’m Every Woman.” But more than a lyric, it summarized to the crowd of A-list superstars and top industry execs that the superstar — whose drug use and erratic behavior had caused a shocking fall from grace just a few years ago — was back in top form.
“We all crossed our fingers that her beautiful story would end (happily),” said Jamie Foxx, who stood at the front of the stage and took video of Houston like he was just another fan in the crowd. “This is a new beginning.”

Houston’s mini-concert put an exclamation point on a night that included a rousing performance by Kelly Clarkson, an unlikely but magical duet between Jennifer Hudson and Barry Manilow and a rambling monologue by Kanye West.
“I have to bow in the presence of greats right now,” West said as he looked out into the crowd, which at one point included Sir Paul McCartney, Prince, Diddy, Rihanna, the Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift, Quincy Jones, and other luminaries.
“I’m just humbled by your greatness, and also Clive,” West told the audience.
Davis, the music mogul who founded labels, signed greats ranging from Houston to Bruce Springsteen to Janis Joplin, and resuscitated the careers of veterans like Rod Stewart and Carlos Santana, was honored by the Recording Academy as an industry icon on Saturday, hours before Sunday’s Grammys. For nearly three decades, Davis’ pre-Grammy party and concert had become one of the industry’s most coveted invites; this year, the Recording Academy took the event over and honored Davis instead. This an audio mashup of two of the most viral audio posts on the net this week. One, the rant by Christian Bale on the set of Terminator 4 and the audio of Obama reading from “Dreams of My Father” which is profanity laden. The Republicans are real lame, they could’ve of really killed a remix of Obama’s vocals during the presidential race, which leads me to believe some one was really sleeping at the wheel.
Once again, SNL kills with this one.
This has got to be the funniest stuff I have seen in a while. 50 Cent is definitely playing chess not checkers. The thing about this beef is that the Ross side is taking this way too serious and Ross needs to inject some humor in it and I think he can survive this and still have a career. Just like 50′s beef with Camron, it was basically comedy. Come on Ross lighten up and you just might save your self from this mess.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Saying Bernard Madoff enjoys a “gilded penthouse incarceration,” civil rights activist Al Sharpton led a rally outside the accused swindler’s Manhattan home on Saturday urging equal justice for the rich and poor.
Sharpton and about 30 other demonstrators protested that Madoff was being allowed to remain free pending trial while poor people with no access to top legal representation languished in prison for relatively minor infractions.
“There must be one standard for all, and not one based on income,” Sharpton said at the protest on Manhattan’s affluent Upper East Side.
He added that Madoff, who is under house arrest, was experiencing “a kind of gilded penthouse incarceration.”
Madoff, 70, was arrested on December 11 in connection with what authorities have described as the biggest Ponzi scheme in history. In a Ponzi scheme, early investors are paid with money from new investors.
According to prosecutors, Madoff has confessed that his money management business was “one big lie” and had racked up losses of as much as $50 billion.
It was not known whether Madoff saw the rally taking place on the street below his penthouse.
Madoff is under 24-hour surveillance in his apartment as a condition of his $10 million bail agreement. Under his bail terms, Madoff must wear an electronic monitor and is only allowed to leave his apartment for court appearances.
A federal judge last month rejected a government appeal to send him to jail.

Forget stereotypical gang colors and traditions. Today’s street gangs are evolving into jumbled hybrids where even Bloods sometimes wear blue and Crips sport red.
But they’re still dangerous, experts say. And more common.
This week the FBI reported that gangs were moving into rural and suburban areas, and that they committed as much as 80 percent of the crime in many communities.
Midwestern gangs also are spreading and tend to have strange names, habits and mixes of criminals and wannabes, experts said at this week’s Kansas Gang Investigators Association conference, which concluded Friday in Olathe.
“They’re comical, and they do stupid stuff,” gang expert David Starbuck told investigators. “Does that make them less of a threat? No. They want to be the Al Capone of Garden City.”
He added, “Will these guys shoot you in a minute? Hell yes.”
Starbuck led the Kansas City police gang unit until he retired in 2001, and now he teaches about gangs at conferences nationwide. He is president of the Missouri chapter of the Midwest Gang Investigators Association.
Gang traditions have faded so much that white supremacists work with black gangsters, and a Vietnamese group goes by the name of a Central American gang, Starbuck told officers.
The gang culture swirls and spreads through rap music, movies and clothing styles, he said. Gangs recruit on the Internet, and members are of every color, come from every social class and vary in each city. Read more…

LONDON (Feb. 7) – A car abandoned in a garage in Britain for half a century sold at an auction in Paris for euro 3.4 million — about $4.4 million — Saturday.
The 1937 Bugatti Type 57S went under the hammer at Bonhams’ Retromobile car show and sale in Paris. It was sold on behalf of the family of its last owner, Dr Harold Carr.
The orthopedic surgeon drove the car for several years, but in the early 1960s it was parked in his garage in Gosforth, near Newcastle in northern England, where it remained for nearly 50 years until his death in 2007.
Bugatti once represented the height of motoring achievement. The supercar was so ahead of its time it could go up to 130 mph when most other cars topped out about 50 mph.
This particular car is especially valuable because it was originally owned by Earl Howe, a prominent British race car driver, and because its original equipment is intact, so it can restored without relying on replacement parts.
Bonham’s said a European collector bought the car.
The company founded in 1909 by Ettore Bugatti collapsed in the 1940s after a long string of racing victories.
The rights to the legendary Bugatti name were purchased in 1998 by Volkswagen, which has built the Bugatti Veyron, one of the world’s fastest and most expensive cars.
Here goes the much anticipated debut episode of MTV‘s Road To Redemption, the reality series about T.I.’s final days before he has to go do that skid bid.
This is just plain dope.

As a parent, I think this is totally crazy.

Paid for by the German health service, psychologists stated he/she was “without doubt a girl in a boy’s body“. Since the age of 12, Kim has been undergoing hormone therapy.
Dr Bernd Meyenburg, head of the Psychiatric Special Outpatient Clinic for Children and Adolescents with Identity Disorders at the University of Frankfurt Hospital explained
Very few youth psychiatrists have any experience with transsexual developments…I was always against such operations on children so young but after seeing how happy one of my patients was and how well adjusted after returning from having the operation abroad while still a teenager – I realised that in some cases it is the right decision…Kim is such a case – she always knew what she wanted.
He should of moved on this the next day to stop the bleeding. But I really don’t think this will effect his movie career, he puts butts in seats, and this will only fuel people to go see the movie anyway.

(CNN) — Olympic hero Michael Phelps was suspended from competitive swimming for three months on Thursday — just hours after one of his sponsors announced it would not renew his contract after a photo surfaced of him smoking from a bong.
USA Swimming, the nation’s governing body for competitive swimming, said it was withdrawing financial support for Phelps and barring him from competition during the period of his “reprimand.”
“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming-member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” they said in a statement.
“Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust,” the statement continued.
Earlier Thursday, Kellogg Co. said it will not renew Phelps’ advertising contract.
“Michael’s most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg,” company spokeswoman Susanne Norwitz said. “His contract expires at the end of February, and we have made a decision not to extend his contract.”
Norwitz said Kellogg’s relationship with Phelps began with the company’s support of the U.S. Olympic team. Kellogg did not renew its sponsorship of the team when it expired in December, she said. Read more…

WASHINGTON (CNN) — One week after the U.S. Army announced record suicide rates among its soldiers last year, the service is worried about a spike in possible suicides in the new year.
The Army said 24 soldiers are believed to have committed suicide in January alone — six times as many as killed themselves in January 2008, according to statistics released Thursday.
The Army said it already has confirmed seven suicides, with 17 additional cases pending that it believes investigators will confirm as suicides for January.
If those prove true, more soldiers will have killed themselves than died in combat last month. According to Pentagon statistics, there were 16 U.S. combat deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq in January.
“This is terrifying,” an Army official said. “We do not know what is going on.”
Col. Kathy Platoni, chief clinical psychologist for the Army Reserve and National Guard, said that the long, cold months of winter could be a major contributor to the January spike. Read more…

Washington — The man who waged a decade-long campaign to alert regulators to problems in the operations of fallen money manager Bernard Madoff told Congress Wednesday that he had feared for his physical safety.
Harry Markopolos also assailed the Securities and Exchange Commission in his first appearance before lawmakers. The SEC failed to act despite receiving credible allegations of fraud from Markopolos about Madoff’s operations over a decade.
Because of the agency’s inaction, “I became fearful for the safety of my family,” Markopolos said at the hearing of a House Financial Services subcommittee.
“The SEC is … captive to the industry it regulates and is afraid” to bring big cases against prominent individuals, Markopolos asserted. The agency “roars like a lion and bites like a flea” and “is busy protecting the big financial predators from investors,” he said.
He spoke as several top-level SEC officials, including the agency’s enforcement director, sat three rows back in the packed hearing room, awaiting their turn to testify before the panel. Read more…

New Berlin – Describing a pattern of manipulation and deception using the social networking site Facebook, the Waukesha County district attorney today announced sexual assault charges against a New Berlin Eisenhower student who authorities say coerced male students into sexual encounters.
Anthony R. Stancl, 18, posing as a female on Facebook, persuaded at least 31 boys to send him naked pictures and then blackmailed some of the boys into performing sex acts under the threat that the pictures would be released to the rest of the high school, authorities say.
All 31 boys attend New Berlin Eisenhower High School.
The sexual assaults occurred in the high school bathroom, the high school parking lot, the public library restroom, Valley View Park, Malone Park and at some of the victims’ homes, authorities say.
At least seven boys were forced into performing sex acts. The 31 males range in age 13 to 19. The youngest sexual assault victim is 15.
The investigation into Stancl began after bomb threats on Nov. 12 and Nov. 13 led to the closure of Eisenhower Middle and High School on Nov 14. The sexual assaults occurred throughout 2008.
District Attorney Brad Schimel said that while the closure of school due to the bomb scare was costly and inconvenient, the charge “pales in comparison” to what investigators learned later. As police were investigating the bomb threat, which included confiscating Stancl’s computer, one victim came forward, he said. Read more…

Credit where credit is due. The TV show “24″ is probably the most significant piece of political drama in the last decade.
On one hand, it is very likely that Barack Obama got elected because America had already had a serious black presidential candidate (one season) and two black presidents (one season each). And he was always the most decent guy in the room. Often, the only decent guy in the room. Just like Obama.
On the other hand, there’s torture.
* Terrorists are going to nuke Los Angeles in three hours.
* Agent Jack Bauer has a suspect who knows where the bomb is.
* If Jack Bauer tortures the suspect, he can force him to say where it is, get there in 2 hours and 59 minutes, stop the bomb, and save 10 million people. Read more…

Forty years after arriving in Israel as self-identified descendants of Tribe of Judah, first member of Israelite community gets letter from Interior Ministry approving request for citizenship. Ministry says more approvals to follow.
“Hallelujah, Hallelujah,” members of Dimona’s Black Hebrew Israelite community sang out after one of them received a notification that he was eligible for Israeli citizenship.
The first of the Black Hebrews arrived in Israel from the United States and Liberia in December 1969, claiming to be the descendants of the Tribe of Judah.
Upon their arrival the Hebrews settled in the southern communities of Dimona, Mitzpe Ramon and Arad, and have struggled extensively in an attempt to gain recognition from the State of Israel.
Only in August 2003 did the Black Hebrew Israelites get the news they were waiting for when then- Interior Minister, Avraham Poraz granted them the status of permanent residents.
In 2004 members of the community, both men and woman, for the first time joined the Israel Defense Force and began fulfilling their civil duties.
On Monday, 62-year-old Elyakim Ben-Israel made his way to the post office to collect a letter sent by registered mail.
When he opened the letter, Ben-Israel was delighted to find a summons from the Interior Ministry inviting him to go pledge allegiance to the State of Israel and its laws. Read more…

OLYMPIA — Suspects arrested in cases as minor as shoplifting would have to give a DNA sample before they are even charged with a crime if a controversial proposal is approved by the Legislature.
State criminal defense groups and the American Civil Liberties Union say the House bill is unconstitutional. It would mandate that police or jail staff collect DNA from all adults and juveniles arrested on suspicion of a felony or gross misdemeanor.
More than a dozen states already allow law enforcement to collect DNA from suspects before they are convicted. Three more states, including Washington, are considering such proposals this year.
“It is good technology. It solves crimes,” said Don Pierce, executive director of the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs, which has long pushed for DNA tests at the time of arrest. “We take fingerprints at the time of arrest, which in many ways is a lot more intrusive.”
Currently, police in Washington state collect DNA from people convicted of a felony and many misdemeanor sex-related crimes after they are sentenced. Police must get a search warrant or permission from the suspect to obtain DNA before a conviction.
The sample usually is taken by swabbing the inside of a person’s cheek.
A separate bill in the Senate also would allow for DNA collection before conviction — but only after formal charges are filed. Read more…
