Topps launches 3D Live baseball cards, video cards on deck

3d_topps

via Engadget

Put aside those Pokeman or Bakugan cards kids, Topps is back with a vengeance in an attempt to woo Internet bred sophisti-tots back into collecting baseball cards. Right, Topps, the company that pre-dates Human Growth Hormone abuse and packs a nostalgic smack of dusty pink sticks of chewing gum is back in the game, this time with some help from former Disney exec Michael Eisner.

Just hold the special 3D Live card in front of a webcam and watch a three-dimensional avatar spring to life — rotate the card and the figure rotates in full perspective. The technology provided by Total Immersion also allows collectors to drop the player into simple pitching, batting and catching games using the computer keyboard. Series 1 cards will cost $2 for a 12-pack while a buck snags a fistful of five. The 3D Live series will eventually feature video. Click through for a video demonstration — trust us, you’ll be amazed at what they’ve done.

Anti-surveillance filmmaker plans eye-socket camera…

March 10, 2009 2 comments

BRUSSELS, March 5 (Reuters) – A Canadian filmmaker plans to have a mini camera installed in his prosthetic eye to make documentaries and raise awareness about surveillance in society.eye_cam

Rob Spence, 36, who lost an eye in an accident as a teenager, said his so-called Project Eyeborg is to have the camera, a battery and a wireless transmitter mounted on a tiny circuit board. www.eyeborgblog.com/

“Originally the whole idea was to do a documentary about surveillance. I thought I would become a sort of super hero … fighting for justice against surveillance,” Spence said.

“In Toronto there are 12,000 cameras. But the strange thing I discovered was that people don’t care about the surveillance cameras, they were more concerned about me and my secret camera eye because they feel that is a worse invasion of their privacy.”

Spence, in Brussels to appear at a media conference, said no part of the camera would be connected to his nerves or brain.

He does not intend to create a reality TV show and the camera will be switched off when not needed, he said.

“I don’t want to go into a locker room. I don’t want to show the world me going to the bathroom either … I’m not a life-caster and I don’t plan to be one,” he said.

WATCHMEN Dominate Box Office

via MyWay

LOS ANGELES (AP) – “Watchmen” easily ruled the weekend box office with the biggest opening of 2009 – and at a time when movie attendance continues to rise.BOX OFFICE

The Warner Bros. superhero flick debuted at No. 1 with $55.2 million. In a distant second place, the Lionsgate comedy “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” locked down $8.5 million in its third weekend. “Taken,” the 20th Century Fox thriller starring Liam Neeson, took the No. 3 spot with $7.3 million.

For the year, movie attendance continues to soar, with revenue at $1.9 billion, up 16 percent through the same point in 2008. Even factoring in 2009′s higher ticket prices, movie attendance is running 14 percent higher than last year.

Not sharing in that success was Disney’s “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience,” which dropped from No. 2 to No. 9.

“Not every film can be a hit,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Media By Numbers, “even during this box-office bonanza we’re having right now. It dropped about 78 percent the second weekend. It’s a young audience. The ones that wanted to see the Jonas Brothers came out last weekend.”

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Media By Numbers LLC:

America becoming less Christian, survey finds

jesus-carries-the-cross

via CNN

(CNN) — America is a less Christian nation than it was 20 years ago, and Christianity is not losing out to other religions, but primarily to a rejection of religion altogether, a survey published Monday found. Seventy-five percent of Americans call themselves Christian, according to the American Religious Identification Survey from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1990, the figure was 86 percent.

William Donohue, president of the Catholic League said he thinks a radical shift towards individualism over the last quarter-century has a lot to do it.

“The three most dreaded words are thou shalt not,” he told Lou Dobbs. “Notice they are not atheists — they are saying I don’t want to be told what to do with my life.”

At the same time there has been an increase in the number of people expressing no religious affiliation.

The survey also found that “born-again” or “evangelical” Christianity is on the rise, while the percentage who belong to “mainline” congregations such as the Episcopal or Lutheran churches has fallen.

One in three Americans consider themselves evangelical, and the number of people associated with mega-churches has skyrocketed from less than 200,000 in 1990 to more than 8 million in the latest survey. Video Watch CNN report on new study »

The rise in evangelical Christianity is contributing to the rejection of religion altogether by some Americans, said Mark Silk of Trinity College.

“In the 1990s, it really sunk in on the American public generally that there was a long-lasting ‘religious right’ connected to a political party, and that turned a lot of people the other way,” he said of the link between the Republican Party and groups such as the Moral Majority and Focus on the Family. Video Watch author on mixing religion and politics »

“In an earlier time, people who would have been content to say, ‘Well, I’m some kind of a Protestant,’ now say ‘Hell no, I won’t go,’” he told CNN.

Silk also said the revelation that some Catholic priests had sexually abused children — and senior figures in the church hierarchy had helped to hide it — drove some Catholics away from religion. Read more…

The Corner book club is an interactive way for 8th-12th grade students to learn and to talk about reading materials that are relevant to their life.

Common explains, “My mom was a teacher, and growing up she always stressed the importance of education. So when I look back it’s not a surprise for me to use words as a tool to make change, and to inspire children for the future.”

For March, War Child by Emmanuel Jal, is the featured “book-of-the-month”. via CNN

(CNN) — One in 50 children is homeless in the United States every year, according to a report released Tuesday.

The report, by the National Center on Family Homelessness, analyzed data from 2005-06 and found that more than 1.5 million children were without a home.

“These numbers will grow as home foreclosures continue to rise,” Ellen Bassuk, president of the center, said in a statement.

The study ranked states on their performance in four areas: the extent of child homelessness, the risk for it, child well-being and the state’s policy and planning efforts.

The states that fared the poorest were Texas, Georgia, Arkansas, New Mexico and Louisiana.

Connecticut, New Hampshire, Hawaii, Rhode Island and North Dakota performed the best.

Homeless children have poor health, emotional problems and low graduation rates, the study found.

“The consequences to our society will play out for decades,” Bassuk said. “As we bail out the rest of our nation, it is also time to come to their aid.” Read more…

YouTube blocks UK users from watching music videos

you-tube-logo

via MyWay

LONDON (AP) – Google Inc. (GOOG) (GOOG) said Monday it will block U.K. users from watching music videos on its popular video-sharing site YouTube after negotiations with Britain’s music royalty-collecting body broke down.

Google said it would begin blocking British users starting Monday night. The Internet titan said it knew the move would cause “significant disappointment.”

But it said its hand was forced by PRS for Music, which it said is asking for royalties that would cause Google to lose money every time a video was played on YouTube.

“Our previous license from PRS for Music has expired, and we’ve been unable so far to come to an agreement to renew it on terms that are economically sustainable for us,” Google said in a statement. Until a solution is found, it added, “we will be blocking premium music videos in the UK that have been supplied or claimed by record labels.” Read more…

Obama Opens Up Stem Cell Work, Science Inquiries

stemcell3

via AP

WASHINGTON (AP) – From tiny embryonic cells to the large-scale physics of global warming, President Barack Obama urged researchers on Monday to follow science and not ideology as he abolished contentious Bush-era restraints on stem-cell research. “Our government has forced what I believe is a false choice between sound science and moral values,” Obama declared as he signed documents changing U.S. science policy and removing what some researchers have said were shackles on their work.

“It is about ensuring that scientific data is never distorted or concealed to serve a political agenda – and that we make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology,” Obama said.

Researchers said the new president’s message was clear: Science, which once propelled men to the moon, again matters in American life.

Opponents saw it differently: a defeat for morality in the most basic questions of life and death.

“The action by the president today will, in effect, allow scientists to create their own guidelines without proper moral restraints,” said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said.

In a crowded ornate East Room, there were more scientists in the White House than Alan Leshner, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science had seen in his 30 years in Washington. “More happy scientists than I’ve seen,” he added. Read more…

Iconic rap group N.W.A. (N*ggaz With Attitude) are reportedly headed to the big screen with a film called Straight Outta Compton.

The film will offer fans an in-depth look into the careers of each member.

New Line is developing Straight Outta Compton, an urban drama about N.W.A. The project will chronicle the rise and fall of the rap quartet, founded by Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and MC Ren, whose songs were so incendiary (i.e. “F— tha Police”) they were banned from radio playlists but still sold millions of albums. The film’s producers, which include Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Tomica Wright (Eazy-E’s widow), and Circle of Confusion entertainment, are now actively searching for a director along the lines of Curtis Hanson (8 Mile). (Entertainment Weekly)

Hip-Hop pioneers Run-DMC are also slated to hit the big screen in the near future.

Notorious screenwriter Cheo Hodari Coker will adapt Bill Adler‘s “Tougher Than Leather: The Rise of Run-DMC — The Authorized Biography” for DJ Classicz president Dallas Jackson. The filmmakers will explore the history of hip-hop’s first superstars: Joseph “Run” Simmons, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell, who was shot to death in his Queens studio in 2002. (Reuters)

The latest rap biopic to hit theaters was last January’s Notorious, based on the uprising of late rapper Biggie Smalls.

Notorious, a biopic of slain rap artist Christopher Wallace grossed an estimated $21.5 million from 1,638 theaters to post the best per-location average, $13,126, of the weekend. C-Murder Taken Into Custody, Violation Sends Rapper Back To Jail

    c-murder3

    via SOHH

Corey “C-Murder” Miller has reportedly been jailed after violating the terms of his house arrest rules Monday (March 9) afternoon.

Miller was taken into custody because he was allegedly out of range while wearing a tracking device.

Deputy Chief Chuck Whitmer of the Gretna Police Department says the monitor early Monday indicated Miller was out of range, a violation of house arrest rules, for about 10 minutes. Miller’s attorney Ron Rakosky says his client received a call about 3 a.m. after the equipment indicated he was out of range. Miller says his client was home sleeping. (The Advertiser)

The rapper was later placed into lock-up after police located him.

Miller was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center and will appear Wednesday before Judge Hans Liljeberg of the 24th Judicial District Court. (Associated Press)

Last week, a judge ruled in Miller’s favor against claims of the rapper violating his house arrest order.

After hearing testimony and questioning witnesses, Judge Hans Liljeberg of the 24th Judicial District Court found that the prosecutor’s argument fell short and noted that the times Miller allegedly strayed happened during “odd, ” early-morning hours. “I’ve never heard of this in any other case, and I don’t know what to make of it, ” Liljeberg said. “I’m not 100 percent convinced” that the home incarceration monitoring equipment worked properly. Joe The Plumber Blasts Michael Steele’s “Hip Hop” Ambitions

    mike_steele__joe

    via TPMDC

Michael Steele now has another high-profile Republican publicly bashing him: Samuel “Joe The Plumber” Wurzelbacher.

At a meeting of conservative activists in Milwaukee, Mr. The Plumber had some tough words for the RNC chairman: “Unfortunately we have a chairman up there who wants to redefine conservatism; he wants to make it hip hop, put it in a new package and sell it.”

“You can’t sell principles; either you have them or you don’t,” he added, to applause from the audience of 800 people.

Joe The Plumber has really embraced his self-proclaimed role as the voice of the right-wing working-class voter – quite a different audience from Steele’s desire to expand the GOP into minority communities. And Joe’s pronouncement that conservative principles can’t be repackaged and sold — you either have them or you don’t — is strikingly similar to Rush Limbaugh’s line from CPAC that conservatism is unchanging and permanent, solidifying a definite line of anti-Steele thought.

    Make it a “Madoff” Special

    March 9, 2009 2 comments

    kamique-villas-3kamique-villas-8

    via TransRacial

Finally some good news is emerging from the whole Bernie Madoff mess.

    At least in the Caribbean.

Our travel spies on the posh island of Anguilla report that Kamique — a boutique sea-front development — is now offering a “Madoff” discount on their four- to six-bedroom villas.

Investors who’ve lost cash with Madoff can tan away their sorrows thanks to 20 to 30 percent price cuts at Kamique (above) if they can prove their losses. Only one person needs to have been swindled for the entire booking party to enjoy!

Reserve up to seven nights and rates are reduced by 20 percent; over a week at they’re cut by 30 percent. The deal comes on top of Kamique’s already existing “economy-appropriate” prices: Eight person/four-bedroom villas start at $2,450 per night; 12 person/six-bedrooms villas from $2,940 per night.

Add in Kamique’s “Madoff” price break and this is a vacation even those on post-Madoff budgets can afford.

Despite Kamique’s wallet-friendly prices, the new villas are pure high style. Each comes with a private pool, azure-tiled outdoor showers, marble floors, deep soaking tubs and airy patios with prime St. Martin views.

There are concierges and butlers and private chefs (the latter two for a premium). Powdery beaches, cerulean seas and technicolor coral reefs.

As for food; Anguilla is known as one of the Caribbean’s top culinary destinations.

And for hard-core Bernie types, Kamique has a specially-designed program with a rabbi in nearby San Juan to deliver Kosher cooking or even Kosherize the entire kitchen.

World Bank Predicts Dire Forecast for World Economy

    world-bank-logo

    via iht

WASHINGTON: In a bleaker assessment than those of most private forecasters, the World Bank predicted Sunday that the global economy would shrink in 2009 for the first time since World War II.

The bank did not provide a specific estimate, but bank officials said its economists would be publishing one in the next several weeks.

Until now, even extremely pessimistic forecasters have predicted that the global economy would eke out a tiny expansion but had warned that even a growth rate of 5 percent in China would be a disastrous slowdown, given the enormous pressure there to create jobs for the country’s rural population.

The World Bank also warned that global trade would contract for the first time since 1982, and that the decline would be the biggest since the 1930s.

In a report prepared for a meeting next week of finance ministers from the 20 industrialized and large developing countries, the World Bank said the economic crisis that started with junk mortgages in the United States was causing havoc for poorer countries around the world, not only stifling their growth but also choking off their access to credit as well.

The bank said the financial disruptions were all but certain to overwhelm the ability of institutions like it and the International Monetary Fund to provide a buffer.

The bank, which provides low-cost lending for economic development projects in poorer countries, pleaded for wealthy governments to create a “vulnerability fund” and to set aside a fraction of what they spend on stimulating their own economies for assisting other countries. Read more…

NBC’s ‘Heroes’ Renewed for Fourth Season

    heroes

    via AceShowBiz

The departure of several staff and the declining ratings, do not make NBC lose faith in ““. The show will go on with the fourth season, producer Bryan Fuller and entertainment president Angela Bromstad confirmed.

To EW, Fuller said that the talks of another season has been brewing for some time. “We’ve spent a lot of time in the writers room talking about what season 4 is going to look like,” he said. In fact, the third season finale will be left open-ended to accommodate a story for the new season. He continued, “Basically, the last act of episode 25, similar to what’s been done in the past, opens up a new chapter of Heroes. It sets up arcs for a variety of characters.”

On what kind of story may be underneath the fourth season, Fuller elaborated “We set all the pieces up in terms of Claire’s attitude and what her trajectory is going to be in season 4. You will have a very strong idea by the end of this season’s final episode where Claire is going and what’s going to be happening with the Petrellis.”

Giving a similar tone, Bromstad said during The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Q&As that “Heroes” will indeed be renewed. The network however, have only decided on 18-20 episodes for the new season.

Additionally, the execs also have another plan of giving the Monday night slot a boost, a new series called “Day One”. Bromstad said, “‘Day One’ is a big event, and we’re looking at that to come into the ‘Heroes’ spot. It’s right now being looked at as a 13-episode run – something people could commit to and we could make a big splash with.”

Grant, 27, pleaded “no contest” to one count of possession of a counterfeit ID, according to a statement from City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo’s office. “Commissioner Mark Zuckman sentenced Grant to 18 months probation and ordered him to perform 50 hours of community service,” the statement said.

The case against Grant stems from a May 2008 incident when a screener at LAX examined an ID card presented by Grant and determined it was fraudulent, the city attorney’s office said. When police investigated, they found that although the ID bore a photograph of Grant, the number belonged to another person. Police confiscated and destroyed the ID card, officials said.

Grant, who was reportedly grazed by a bullet as he sat in a parked car in Brooklyn in January 2008, is prohibited from possessing another individual’s identity information without permission for the length of his probation. The case against Grant was part of the city attorney’s LAX Security Enhancement Initiative that was launched in March 2007, officials said.

BREAKING: CHAVEZ CALLS ON OBAMA TO FOLLOW PATH OF SOCIALISM

    hugo-chavez

    via Drudge Report

Caracas – Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Friday called upon US President Barack Obama to follow the path to socialism, which he termed as the “only” way out of the global recession. “Come with us, align yourself, come with us on the road to socialism. This is the only path. Imagine a socialist revolution in the United States,” Chavez told a group of workers in the southern Venezuelan state of Bolivar.

The controversial Venezuelan leader, who taunted the United States as a source of capitalistic evil under former president George W Bush, added that the United States needs a leader who can take it to a “higher” destiny and bring it out of “the sad role that it has been given, as a murderous, attacking power that is hated all around the world.”

Chavez said that people are calling Obama a “socialist” for the measures of state intervention he is taking to counter the crisis, so it would not be too far-fetched to suggest that he might join the project of “21st century socialism” that the Venezuelan leader is heading.

“Nothing is impossible. Who would have thought in the 1980s that the Soviet Union would disappear? No one,” he said.

“That murderous, genocidal empire has to end, and some day there has to come a leader … who interprets the best of a people who also include human beings who suffer, endure, weep and laugh,” the outspoken Chavez said.

Nas Grants Very Special Wish For 13 Year-Old

    via HipHopDX

Nas has had a variety of awards and accolades for his rhyming. He’s obtained the attention of millions as the center of scrutiny and praise. Something he isn’t that well known for has been charitable work. While the rapper has done some work, it isn’t as talked about as his beef with Jay-Z or marriage to Kelis. Recently, news broke that Nas will continue to help others in connection with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. nas_l

Darnell Hicks, a 13 year-old young man with Muscular Distrophe from The Susquehanna Township of Pennsylvania, is ready to meet his hero. He is now in Los Angeles as part of a three day stay. During this visit, he will be visiting landmarks and theme parks including Universal Studios Hollywood and Disneyland.

The main purpose for this trip, however, is a meeting with Nas at one of his shows. This is something he’s been gearing up for with anticipation. When he and his grandfather Milton Watson spoke with Pennlive.com, the young man was planning questions for his idol.

“He even got his hair cut,” Watson said, laughing. “He said ‘Pop-Pop, I have to get my hair cut, so I have a fresh cut for Nas.’”

“I got my hair cut,” he said. “I think he’s going to say he likes it.”

Joanne Watson, Darnell’s grandmother, is pleased to see her grandson’s wish come true.

“I’m so happy they were able to grant him the wish and have everything laid out for him. For once, all we’ll have to do is ride. That’s a relief.”

And while both the current economic climate and the initial reception to the show didn’t help, CNN states neither played a part in canceling the show.

Universal To Partner With YouTube For New Video Site

    via XXL

An inevitability in the age of downloading as record labels look for new revenue streams, at least one label is in talks with YouTube to create a premium online music video service.umg-news

Reuters reports that Universal Music Group—the umbrella under which such labels as Interscope and Def Jam fall and home to artists the likes of Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and 50 Cent—is looking to partner with the No. 1 video site in the nation to create what at this point is being referred to as “Vevo.” Carrying premium music-related content, the new video site would generate higher advertising and per-play rates than currently available through YouTube.

Financial terms of a potential deal remain unknown, but an agreement between the two media giants could prompt similar partnerships between YouTube and the remaining “Big Four” labels—Warner Music Group, EMI, and Sony BMG. Back In December, Warner ordered YouTube to pull all of their content from the site after contract talks fell apart but current agreements with Universal, EMI, and Sony BMG remain in place.
