A Somali teenager is due to appear in a New York courtroom on Tuesday for arraignment on charges that he was one of a group of pirates who hijacked an American cargo ship and held its captain hostage for days in a lifeboat on the Indian Ocean.

The suspected pirate, identified in court documents as Abduhl Wali-i-Musi, arrived in New York late Monday to face what are believed to be the first piracy charges in the United States in more than a century.

Surrounded by federal guards and television cameras, the thin young man smiled but said nothing as he was led into a federal building in a driving rainstorm Monday night. He was handcuffed with a chain around his waist, and was clad a blue jumpsuit, with one hand wrapped in thick white bandages. The American crew of the cargo ship, the Maersk Alabama, said he was injured when they captured him during the attempted hijacking. He is the sole Somali survivor of the incident; he had surrendered and was aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Bainbridge when Navy sharpshooters killed the three men holding the American captain on the lifeboat.

The Associated Press said that one of its reporters reached the teenager’s parents in Somalia by telephone. In the call, the accused pirate’s other said he was just 16, and was lured into piracy by older men with the promise of money.

UPDATE: Gun Charges Against Flesh-N-Bone Dropped

Gun charges against Bone Thugs-N-Harmony rapper Flesh-N-Bone were dropped in a Santa Clarita, California courtroom yesterday (April 20).

Flesh, born Stanley Howse, was charged with multiple felonies charges after he was stopped for a moving violation on April 2.

The traffic stop led to a search of his Canyon Country home, where police found a gun, ammunition and a small amount of marijuana.

He was arrested and charged with felony possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of ammunition and a misdemeanor for the marijuana.

According to the Los Angeles County D.A. office, all of the charges were dropped yesterday, for unknown reasons.

Flesh’ defense attorney argued that the rapper has a medical license for the marijuana, while the gun found locked in a closet was registered to his wife, a police officer for the Chicago Police Department.

The rapper spent 10 years in prison for threatening an individual with an AK-47.

Flesh-N-Bone is expected to be released from jail this week.

Almost 1 in 10 Young Video Game Users ‘Addicted’

MONDAY, April 20 (HealthDay News) — A sizable number of young video game players — fully 8.5 percent — exhibit signs of addiction to gaming, a new study has found.

These kids aren’t just playing a lot. Their gaming interferes with school performance, disrupts interaction with family and friends and poses health problems, the study reveals.

Douglas A. Gentile, a developmental psychologist and an assistant professor at Iowa State University in Ames, said the study is the first to document the prevalence of video game addiction using a nationally representative sample of children and adolescents.

“What’s most concerning to me is really the total percentage, just the vast number of kids that are having real problems in their lives because they play games, and they may not know how to stop it,” said Gentile, whose study appears in the May edition of Psychological Science.

Experts don’t agree on whether such a thing as “video game addiction” really exists. At present, it is not listed as a mental disorder in the American Psychiatric Association‘s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The next update of that manual, which describes criteria for diagnosing various psychiatric disorders, is due out in 2012.

And what a movie it would be if Foxx ever indeed portrays Iron Mike on the big screen. Tyson — whose life is told in all its glory and tragedy in the new documentary “Tyson” set for release this Friday (April 24) — has seen enough drama in his life to fill multiple biopics. From his years as a wunderkind boxer under the tutelage of Cus D’Amato to his rape conviction and repeated attempts at redemption, the film would be unbelievable … if it weren’t all true.

“It’s gonna be [about me],” he told MTV News about the planned collaboration. “It’s gonna be Jamie Foxx portraying me in a life story.”

Almost five years since the death of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, a number of his associates have come together to pay their respects to the late Wu-Tang rapper on both CD and DVD.

All In Together Now Raw: A Tribute To The Ol’ Dirty Bastard, is set to hit shelves next month. The 10-track disc features appearances from The Rza, Masta Killa, Killah Army, 4th Disciple and Brooklyn Zu, among others.

Yet the disc was an afterthought to the film, according to Raison Allah, ODB’s cousin and Brooklyn Zu MC who is responsible for both projects. “Years ago I promised to keep Dirty’s legacy alive so we formed Zu Films and started filming a documentary which tells his life story,” he said in a press release. “But with all the footage and interviews I still felt like something was missing; Dirty was all about the music. When word got out that we were working on a documentary, Wu fam started sending me so many tracks. We had so many dope tracks that we didn’t want to wait until the soundtrack until the DVD to put them out.”

Panasonic is exhibiting a conceptual model of a 3D Full HD Camera Recorder at the 2009 NAB Show where it announced it would start development of a 3D Full HD Production System.

With Hollywood studios moving towards creation of more 3D entertainment content, Panasonic successfully debuted the world’s first 3D Full HD Plasma Home Theater System based on Plasma display and Blu-ray Disc technologies at the CEATEC trade show in Japan in September 2008. More recently, the company also established the Advanced Authoring Center within Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory in February 2009 to support Hollywood studios in developing 3D Full HD Blu-ray Disc titles.

Jay-Z Comes To Michael Phelps’ Defense

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps made headlines last January when a picture of the gold medalist smoking marijuana was posted in a British newspaper.

A number of people have spoken out against Phelps and others in support of the swimmer. In a recent interview with Cigar Aficionado magazine rapper Jay-Z explained that people shouldn’t be so quick to shun Phelps after one mistake.

“You look at all these people who graduated from Princeton and Harvard, who are supposed to be pillars of the community, every day [they’re] in the newspaper arrested for some kind of financial fraud,” Jay-Z explained. “Then you look at someone like Michael Phelps. He’s 23. What’s he gonna do? He’s a kid. He’s going to experiment.”

A fan of rap, Phelps is sure to be elated by Jay-Z’s comments. Last year Phelps expressed his love for Hip Hop in an interview with Time magazine [click to read].

“I listen to hip hop and rap to sort of help me get focused, to get ready to get up and do what I’m there do. It helps me to tune everything out, and take one step at time,” Phelps told Time magazine when asked what he listens to before races. “A lot of the new stuff is what I have on my MP3 player. I don’t really have any favorites, but right now, it might be Young Jeezy; I just listen to whatever comes on.”

Shortly after the pictures of Phelps smoking marijuana were published, he issued an apology explaining that he “acted in a youthful and inappropriate way” and that he greatly regrets what he did.

Adobe’s new Flash can stream Internet content to TVs

Adobe Systems on Monday unveiled a version of its Flash multimedia streaming technology that would allow people to run entertainment programming directly to television sets from the Internet, a new option for the rapidly changing digital-home market.

Adobe also has signed up a host of partners to support the technology, called the Adobe Flash Platform for the Digital Home. The new platform is available now to OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), and the first devices and processors that will support it should be available in the second half of the year, Adobe said.

Partners that have signed on to support the new version of Flash are Atlantic Records, Broadcom, Comcast, Disney Interactive Media Group, Intel, Netflix, STMicroelectronics, The New York Times Company, NXP Semiconductors and Sigma Designs.

Industry analyst Ben Bajarin, director of consumer technology for Creative Strategies, said the news is significant because it makes Flash the first enabling technology to allow entertainment providers to stream content directly to televisions. Currently, the way to get this kind of content onto televisions is mainly by hooking up a PC to a TV or set-top box, he said.

Bajarin said Adobe also is approaching its digital home strategy from a different perspective than competitors. Rather than provide a PC with a media-enhanced OS, like Microsoft does with digital home-optimized PCs, Adobe wants to provide a software platform to take content directly from the Internet to TVs.

Will Smith in ‘Business’ with Sci Fi

Sci Fi Channel is teaming with Will Smith for a new crime procedural.

The network has ordered “Unfinished Business,” a drama about an ex-cop who starts seeing flashes of memories from the recently deceased. The visions compel him to help wronged souls resolve their unfinished business.

The network plans to air “Business” as a two-hour movie that will also serve as a potential series pilot.

“Business” is being produced through Overbrook Entertainment, with Smith, James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz executive producing. Emmy-nominated scribe Sally Robinson (“Iron Jawed Angels”) will write the pilot, and Emmy winner Mikael Salomon (“Band of Brothers”) is attached to direct. Both also will serve as executive producers. The project will be produced by Universal Cable Prods., with Overbrook head Heather Courtney overseeing production.

“Sci Fi is excited to begin development on ‘Unfinished Business’ with Overbrook Entertainment and Will Smith,” said Mark Stern, executive vp original programming at Sci Fi. “It is a compelling and thrilling drama that is perfect for our audience.”

The drama represents a meld between Sci Fi’s brand and the most sturdy scripted genre format. The network’s most recent stab at the crime procedural was 2007′s “The Dresden Files.”

“Business” joins “The Phantom” and “Riverworld” as backdoor pilots coming to the network, which changes its name to Syfy on July 7.

Passengers on a charter flight at Jamaica’s Sangster International airport were taken hostage on late Sunday night.

Apparently, a man snuck aboard the CanJet plane which was headed for Halifax, Canada and took hostages.

CNN reports:

They were boarding the CanJet flight from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay to Halifax, Canada, late Sunday when the security breach occurred, said Elizabeth Scotton, a spokeswoman for the company that manages the airport.
Scotton would not say how many hostages were being held.

About 150 people were scheduled to be on the flight, said Jamaican police Lt. Col. Derek Robinson, and it was not known how many were on the plane.

The man reportedly breached security systems using fake ID and boarded the plane as it was preparing to take off at around 2230 local time (0430 GMT).
Negotiations for the release of the hostages are said to be taking place.

The gunman is said to have robbed passengers, most of whom were released after half an hour.

Prox Dynamics’ PD-100 “Black Hornet” nano-copter has already gone through a number of different prototypes and test flights, but it looks like things have really started to come together with the last few models, and the company has taken advantage of the opportunity to show off their progress in a couple of videos. One of those shows a “simulated” indoor mission, in which the 15 gram copter scouts out a nondescript office building whilst some suitably dramatic music plays in the background. The other, slightly more interesting video demonstrates how the two latest models are able to handle themselves in flight, and hold up against some obstacles, like the always problematic flapping clip board. Exxon Mobil overtakes Wal-Mart to top Fortune 500

NEW YORK -Exxon Mobil Corp. unseated Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in the 2009 Fortune 500 list, shrugging off the oil price bubble and weathering what the magazine called the worst year ever for the country’s largest publicly traded companies.

Fortune’s closely watched list, released Sunday, ranked companies by their revenue in 2008. Irving, Texas-based Exxon took in $442.85 billion in revenue last year, up almost 19 percent from 2007. The company also raked in the biggest annual profit, earning $45.2 billion.

Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart had held the top spot for six of the last seven years but fell to No. 2 this year. Still, the retail giant’s 2008 revenue climbed 7 percent to $405.6 billion, as the battered economy sent more consumers searching for bargains. The world’s largest retailer took in $13.4 billion in annual profit, an increase of about 5 percent.

Although it may have been a good year for Exxon and Wal-Mart, 2008 was far from rosy for most of remaining companies on the list. Overall earnings plunged 85 percent to $98.9 billion from $645 billion in 2007, the biggest one-year decline in the 55-year history of the Fortune 500 list.

“America is getting used to the sound of bubbles bursting,” Fortune said.

Energy companies continued to dominate many of the top positions, as last summer’s skyrocketing oil and gas prices more than compensated for their plunge later that fall. Chevron Corp. held on to third place with $263.16 billion in revenue, up 25 percent.

THESE days the Asher Roth show begins after the concert is over. In late March Mr. Roth performed at the Sherman Theater here for East Stroudsburg University’s “I ♥ College” week. By 10:30 p.m. he was offstage, and the obstacle course began.

First came the well-wishers and the weed smokers, who kept this young rapper occupied for a long time in the basement dressing room. Then, outside the theater, came the frat boys, beers in hand. Was Mr. Roth, they wondered, man enough to party with them? Then there was the guy in the gray sedan who trailed Mr. Roth’s caravan back to the Budget Inn & Suites just to see what was going on. After that a return to town: house party crashed, beer pong played, pictures snapped.

“I have to embrace this role of ‘Asher Roth’ now,” he said the following morning in the hotel’s empty restaurant, wearing the same white T-shirt and grayish jeans as the night before and straining a bit after just a few hours’ sleep. “If I continue to behave this way, sure, people are going to love me, but I’m going to be run down into the ground.”

Mr. Roth is taxed because of another morning after, the one described in the woozy party anthem “I Love College,” his debut single, which has sold almost a million copies to date, peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been streamed more than 30 million times on his MySpace page. Lil Wayne to Appear on ‘The View’

The ladies of “The View” will get a special visit from Lil Wayne next week.

The Cash Money rapper is scheduled to join co-hosts Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and Sherri Shepherd on ABC’s popular talk show on Friday, April 24. He will perform for the first time on the daytime program, which is taped in New York City.

Hundreds of active pharmaceutical ingredients are used in a variety of manufacturing, including drugmaking: For example, lithium is used to make ceramics and treat bipolar disorder; nitroglycerin is a heart drug and also used in explosives; copper shows up in everything from pipes to contraceptives.

Federal and industry officials say they don’t know the extent to which pharmaceuticals are released by U.S. manufacturers because no one tracks them – as drugs. But a close analysis of 20 years of federal records found that, in fact, the government unintentionally keeps data on a few, allowing a glimpse of the pharmaceuticals coming from factories.

As part of its ongoing PharmaWater investigation about trace concentrations of pharmaceuticals in drinking water, AP identified 22 compounds that show up on two lists: the EPA monitors them as industrial chemicals that are released into rivers, lakes and other bodies of water under federal pollution laws, while the Food and Drug Administration classifies them as active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Now let’s be brutally honest here, I’m sure in bars across America these kind of conversations take place every day.  There are no bleeding heart policemen throwing back shots in Irish pubs losing any sleep over dead Black and Latino men, especially no one in the NYPD.  By the way, this reminds me this week marks the one-year anniversary of the acquittal of the cops who killed Sean Bell, may that man rest in peace.

ERIE, Pa. (April 19) — A city police officer was suspended after someone posted to the Web a video of him, in a bar and apparently intoxicated, joking about a homicide victim.

In his profanity-laced rant, James Cousins II talks about the victim being shot in the forehead and his body lying outside a bar below a malt liquor sign that reads, “take it to the head.” He laughs as he recounts seeing the dead man’s leg twitch and the reaction of the victim’s mother as she identifies him. Cousins also says he used his camera phone to take photos of the victim.

“We’re looking at it like, ‘One less drug dealer to deal with. Cool,’” he says on the video.

Cousins, who was hired in 2004, was suspended with pay Wednesday after the Erie Times-News asked about the video. A phone message left Thursday at a number for a James Cousins was not immediately returned.
