Prez Obama Targets Mexican Cartels

President Obama yesterday ratcheted up efforts to curb the flow of drugs and guns across the southern border, imposing financial sanctions against three of the most violent Mexican drug cartels and threatening to prosecute Americans who do business with them.

On the eve of his summit with Mexican President Felipe Calderón today, Obama added the cartels to the list of banned foreign “drug kingpins,” a move that empowers the federal government to seize their assets, estimated to be in the billions of dollars. It also allows the government to seek criminal penalties against U.S. firms or individuals who provide weapons, launder money or transport drugs or cash for the organizations.

By targeting the cartels — Sinaloa, Los Zetas and La Familia Michoacana — the administration expanded its support for Calderón’s crackdown on the narco-traffickers, an effort that has provoked a violent backlash and led to thousands of deaths in the past two years.

The Obama administration accelerated what is normally a year-long effort to add names to the banned list. The government did not identify assets held by the three cartels, but authorities have estimated that $19 billion to $39 billion in drug proceeds flows south each year from the United States.

The financial sanctions provide an additional tool against the organizations, whose drug and gun trafficking has proved exceedingly difficult to curtail. Mexico, for example, has seized more than 35,000 firearms from narco-traffickers since December 2006, and both governments say 90 percent of the weapons originated in the United States.

Second-Largest US Shopping Mall Owner Files for Biggest Bankruptcy in US History

April 16 (Bloomberg) — General Growth Properties Inc. filed the biggest real estate bankruptcy in U.S. history after amassing $27 billion in debt during an acquisition spree that turned it into the second-largest shopping mall owner.

The owner of Boston’s Faneuil Hall and the South Street Seaport in New York City ended a seven-month effort today to rework its financing. The company listed $29.5 billion in assets and debts of about $27.3 billion in the Chapter 11 filing. General Growth will continue operating its more than 200 properties.

“We intend to emerge as a leaner company,” General Growth President Thomas Nolan said in an interview today. “We want to come out as a less leveraged company. Our business model remains strong.”

General Growth collapsed after spending $11.3 billion to buy commercial-property developer Rouse Co. in 2004 only to get caught in the credit crunch and a U.S. recession that has cut spending and property values. Banks have reduced lending amid mortgage-related writedowns. Commercial real estate prices in the U.S. dropped 15 percent last year, according to Moody’s Investors Service. Retail sales in the U.S. unexpectedly fell in March as soaring job losses forced consumers to pull back.

The filing lists Eurohypo AG, a unit of Commerzbank AG, as General Growth’s largest unsecured creditor with claims totaling $2.59 billion under two loans. Noteholders are owed about $4 billion.

Hedge fund manager William Ackman’s Pershing Square Pershing Square Capital Management LP will provide General Growth with $375 million in financing to help run the company during the Chapter 11 process, today’s statement said. Ackman is likely to play a key role in the reorganization since Pershing is the third-largest shareholder, according to Bloomberg data.

Lil Wayne Felony Case Remains In Superior Court

Lil Wayne attorneys were denied a request to have a 2008 felony drug and weapons case pushed back to the Grand Jury by a judge Tuesday (April 14) afternoon.Arguing a lack of evidence led to the case being brought to Superiour Court, Wayne’s lawyers appeared in court yesterday requesting their motion.

In their motion, which was based on the misconduct with weapons charge, attorneys James Tilson and Natman Schaye argued the Grand Jury was not given all the elements involved in the alleged offense, and that led to an errorneous finding of probable cause. Superior Court Judge Mark Wayne Reeves, who is presiding over the case, said he based his decision on having read the Grand Jury transcripts as to what the factual basis of the offense was, the statutes the offense fell under and that there is a different standard of finding of probable cause between a trial jury and a Grand Jury. Weezy was originally arrested January 2008 on multiple felony charges.

The latest legal entanglement for the rapper came when a search of his tour bus at a border checkpoint near Dateland, Arizona, uncovered nearly 4 ounces of marijuana, more more than 1 ounce of cocaine, 41 grams of ecstasy, drug paraphernalia, $22,000 in cash and a .40-caliber pistol that was registered to Wayne in Florida, where he has a concealed-weapons permit. Wayne was released from a Yuma County jail after posting $10,185 in bail. (MTV)

Scott Storch Busted for Alleged Bentley Theft

This one flew under the radar screen for months, but we just learned Scott Storch — formerly a wildly wealthy music producer for the likes of Dr. Dre and 50 Cent — has been charged with grand theft auto.

Storch allegedly leased a Bentley but never returned it after the expiration date. It took the leasing company 7 months to find it.

Storch pled not guilty in Broward County Court last Friday.

Fun Fact: Lil Kim had a Bentley repossessed back in ’08 — which just happened to be a gift from none other than Storch himself. We don’t know if it’s the same Bentley.

UPDATE: Storch’s lawyer, Bradford M. Cohen, just released this statement: “We are disappointed in the decision to take a civil dispute and file it as a criminal charge. There are many facts, that when revealed, will clearly demonstrate that there was no criminal wrong doing on behalf of my client.”

Rap battles in 2009 have come to this: guerrilla Internet videos, costumed caricatures, 48-hour “rapid-response” windows, hatchet-job background checks, lurid baby-mama-wooing, wanton stalking of your enemies’ friends’ mothers, and lots and lots of Photoshop. Actual rapping is optional.

The current master of the form is Curtis Jackson, a/k/a 50 Cent, currently waging an epic war against rival Miami rapper Rick Ross. Battles have traditionally revolved around lyrical put-downs and, occasionally, actual violence. But this is a new type of conflict, one that goes beyond diss records and mean-mugging and into the unrestricted world of new media. Using his popular website, thisis50.com, as a bully pulpit since its 2007 debut, 50 both promotes himself and disparages his foes with cartoonish taunts and comedic skits. But lately, he’s elevated its focus and apparently found newer, stranger sources of inspiration—Obama, for example.

“I looked at this beef like how Barack ran his campaign,” says Chris “Broadway” Romero, the site’s creator and the VP of digital marketing for 50′s G-Unit label. “He had people who understood how to mobilize people on the Web. People always asked me, ‘Why are rappers always going at each other’s throats?’ I say, ‘Why do politicians or businesses go after each other?’ Rap is very competitive.”

50 Cent, if anyone, understands the combative nature of hip-hop, with an illustrious history of baiting and battling fellow rappers. He elbowed his way onto the scene in 1999 with “How to Rob,” in which he fantasized about mugging better-known rappers unaccustomed to being lampooned by newcomers. 50 was later stabbed at Manhattan‘s Hit Factory studio and famously shot nine times while sitting in a car near his home in Jamaica, Queens; upon recovering, he hit the mixtape circuit and ran a clinic on rap beefs with an endless onslaught against rival Ja Rule, whose popularity plummeted as a result.

Such an insatiable appetite for beef naturally led him to the Internet. When longtime rival Fat Joe released his eighth studio album, The Elephant in the Room, last year, 50 posted a free G-Unit mixtape the same day to thisis50.com, subtitled Elephant in the Sand, in addition to a litany of mocking videos; he waged a similar multimedia war against Harlem-based adversary Cam’ron.

When Barack Obama released his 2000-2006 tax filings during the height of the presidential campaign, he was criticized for slightly-less-than-biblically-required charitable giving.

In those years, Obama (serving as Illinois state senator, then U.S. Senator) never offered more than six percent of his income to charity. Twice he gave less than one percent of his earnings.

Fast forward a few years, and the Obamas’ returns tell a different story — both of a higher income bracket and a far higher rate of charitable giving.

The White House released the filings for both the President and the First Lady on Wednesday. Combined, the family brought in an adjusted gross income of $2,656,902, mostly from the sale of the President’s books. The Obamas paid $855,323 in federal income tax. And they donated $172,050 – or about 6.5% of their adjusted gross income – to 37 different charities.

The Department of Homeland Security is warning law enforcement officials about a rise in “rightwing extremist activity,” saying the economic recession, the election of America’s first black president and the return of a few disgruntled war veterans could swell the ranks of white-power militias.

A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines “rightwing extremism in the United States” as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority.

“It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration,” the warning says.

The White House has distanced itself from the analysis. When asked for comment on its contents, White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said, “The President is focused not on politics but rather taking the steps necessary to protect all Americans from the threat of violence and terrorism regardless of its origins. He also believes those who serve represent the best of this country, and he will continue to ensure that our veterans receive the respect and benefits they have earned.”

The nine-page document was sent to police and sheriff’s departments across the United States on April 7 under the headline, “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.”

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Hours after an extensive collection of memorabilia owned by Michael Jackson went on view for a public auction, the auctioneer and Mr. Jackson announced Tuesday that they had agreed to cancel the sale and return the property to him.

Mr. Jackson hired Julien’s Auctions last year to sell the contents of Neverland Valley Ranch, his former estate northwest of Los Angeles, and the company put together an auction of more than 1,000 items. But last month Mr. Jackson’s company, MJJ Productions, sued to prevent the auction, saying that he had not been given an opportunity to review the items in advance.

The terms of the agreement were not revealed. But in a joint statement, MJJ Productions and Julien’s said that the exhibition, at a former Robinson’s-May department store, would remain up until April 25.

“From an artistic standpoint we are very disappointed,” said Darren Julien, president of Julien’s. “It’s just kind of a relief for us, because it’s a resolution. Litigation is not fun for anybody.”

Smirking for the camera, this is the 20-year-old woman Mexican police caught guarding an extraordinary arsenal of weapons.

Anahi Beltran Cabrera was seized during a routine patrol in Sonora state, near the U.S. border.

Officers recovered a vast cache of weapons including an anti-aircraft gun capable of firing 800 shots per minute, a number of rifles and an array of ammunition.

They believe the haul belongs to a group allegedly linked to the powerful Beltan Leyva drug cartel.

Cabrera was paraded before the media – along with the weapons she was caught guarding.

Large swathes of Mexico have been ravaged by violence with drugs gangs battling for territory.

Last month, 2,000 soldiers and armed federal police were deployed into the border town of Ciudad Juarez to restore order to the country’s most violent city.

In one month, 250 people were killed by hitmen fighting for lucrative smuggling routes.

TV’s “Judge Mathis” Goes Virtual in New Shooter Game

Over 3 million people tune into the syndicated court TV show, “Judge Mathis,” every day. But Judge Greg Mathis is not reaching troubled youth through television. As a result, Mathis has teamed up with Hollywood filmmaker Matty Rich (The Inkwell, Straight Out of Brooklyn) to create an original videogame for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC called Mathis “Detroit” Street Judge.

Rather than going the traditional TV-licensed root of turning a courtroom format virtual, Rich and Mathis are crafting a third-person perspective, open world shooter set in the ghettos of Detroit. Players will step into the role of convicted felon La-Ron Washington, who’s been released from prison early due to overcrowding but has two strikes hanging over his head. La-Ron is given one last chance; he must stay out of trouble, perform community services and avoid negative street influences and temptations. One more strike and La-Ron gets a life sentence from Judge Mathis.

But out on the street, the entire Detroit underworld wants him dead for the alleged murder of a crime boss – a murder he didn’t commit.

“I know that the most popular game out there is Grand Theft Auto IV and I know that a lot of young video game players like the (virtual) action of criminal activity,” said Mathis. “In this game, we’re giving them that action and adding the option of living a mainstream, successful life. They have the combination of an action-packed criminal activity, as well as the opportunity to turn their lives around and pursue a level of success, as I did after leaving my background in the world of crime.”

The hip hop performer featured a bottle of Armand de Brignac in the video to his single Show Me What You Got, after falling out with the owners of Cristal, his previous bubbly of choice.

The garish gold bottle of Armand de Brignac chimed perfectly with the urban music industry’s “bling” culture of conspicuous consumption, propelling the previously unknown brand into competition with the big champagne houses including Dom Perignon and Krug.

Stars including David Beckham and George Clooney are among those won over to Armand de Brignac, which is referred to by drinkers as “Ace of Spades” after the image on its label.

Jacques Cattier, president of Cattier Champagne, Armand de Brignac’s producer with just 20 staff based in the village of Chigny Les Roses in Champagne-Ardennes, said he was astonished by the rise of the brand, which was only launched in 2006. The name – taken from the hero of a 1950s romantic novel – was suggested by his mother.

Common Gets Tapped to Star in new flick alongside Tina Fey

Once he gets past killing Skynet robots alongside Christian Bale in this summer’s Terminator Salvation, Common is slated to star in another high-profile film. Variety reports that the Chicago emcee has signed on to play a villain in the comedy, Date Night.

The all-star cast of the 20th Century Fox production includes stars Steve Carrell of The Office and Tina Fey of 30 Rock, as well as Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, and Taraji P. Henson in supporting roles. Yet to begin filming, Date Night has no official release date at press time.

For Common, in addition to conquering the big screen, his next moves will take him into the fragrance and apparel worlds. Partnering with Diesel, the rapper will appear in print and television ads promoting the new men’s fragrance, “Only The Brave,” according to Billboard. Microsoft has also tapped Common for Softwear, a line of t-shirts currently available in select stores.

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today joined state Rep. Brandon Creighton and sponsors of House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 50 in support of states’ rights under the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

“I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state,” Gov. Perry said. “That is why I am here today to express my unwavering support for efforts all across our country to reaffirm the states’ rights affirmed by the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I believe that returning to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and its essential 10th Amendment will free our state from undue regulations, and ultimately strengthen our Union.”

A number of recent federal proposals are not within the scope of the federal government’s constitutionally designated powers and impede the states’ right to govern themselves. HCR 50 affirms that Texas claims sovereignty under the 10th Amendment over all powers not otherwise granted to the federal government.

Brazen Pirates Defiantly Jack 4 More Ships, Fire on Fifth

Somali pirates have brazenly hijacked four more ships in the Gulf of Aden over the last 24 hours and opened fire on a fifth.

The pirates captured two trawlers yesterday, a cargo ship named the M.V. Irene overnight, and a second cargo ship named the M.V. Seahorse today.

This afternoon a Nato official said a band of pirates had opened fire on a fifth cargo ship – but it managed to escape.

A maritime security contractor, speaking on condition of anonymity because it is a sensitive security issue, said the ship put out a distress signal ‘to say they had a suspicious vessel approaching. That rapidly turned into an attack and then a hijacking.’

‘They tried to call in support on the emergency channels, but they never got any response,’ the contractor said.

Yesterday, Somali pirates also seized two Egyptian fishing boats in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia’s northern coast, according to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, which said there were 18 to 24 Egyptians onboard at the time.

Welcome to McDonald’s on Hindley St. These pictures were taken in the dining area at 3am last Sunday by Adelaide law student Jeremy Brown while on a night out with friends.

After entering the premises for a snack, the 22-year-old Hawthorndene resident said he was so disgusted by what he saw that he decided to film it on his mobile phone.

“I went in there and we were all aghast how grotty it was, and I thought I’d capture it on film because people wouldn’t believe how messy it was,” he said.
