KURT Cobain’s estate has lost all the money left to his widow Courtney Love and their daughter, Frances Bean, in an alleged money laundering scam.
The New York Post reports bank accounts using the social security numbers of Cobain, Love andFrances Bean were allegedly set up to buy and sell real estate across the US.
“There is now a web of homes which were bought, flipped and used to launder money – up to $US500 million worth,” Love’s lawyer Rhonda J. Holmes said.
“Any of the property we can get back will be donated to people who have lost their homes in foreclosures.”
Investigators, forensic accountants and lawyers hired by Love found that the Nirvana singer’s estate had lost more than $45 million cash and up to $705 million in real estate.

David Prowse, the English actor who played (but didn’t voice) Darth Vader in the first three Star Wars, recently told Equity Magazine that he has yet to receive any of the residuals he’s owed for Return of the Jedi… because LucasFilm claims the film hasn’t made a profit.
“I get these occasional letters from Lucasfilm saying that we regret to inform you that as Return of the Jedi has never gone into profit, we’ve got nothing to send you.” [TimesOnline]
Meanwhile, Box Office Mojo puts the lifetime take at $475 million, not including the $88 million it made upon re-release in 1997. With a production budget of $32.5 million. LucasFilm is able to get away with it because Prowse’s deal, like most actors, was for net profit, rather than gross. As a /Film commenter points out…
“Unfortunately, Mr. Prowse relates what is almost universally the case with a net profit clause. Studios almost never pay on this clause, as they claim nearly any and every expense possible to keep the film from showing any actual profit. Very few films have ever shown a net profit on the books.”
So, as you might expect. Though claiming you have expenses that account for $539.5 million (not including merchandising) is still pretty ballsy. George Lucas could buy a petting zoo for his “friends” every day of the week and still have plenty left over for racecar beds and rare breeds of cats to eat, not to mention the vat of singles to get greased up and roll around in for the kids to peel off when they need candy money. Don’t tell me I don’t know how this Hollywood stuff works.

Financial services providers that do not attempt to reach African- Americans are missing out on a treasure trove in their midst, asserts a recent Marketing Daily story.
Marketing Daily reports statistics stating that over two million African-American households have incomes of $75,000, and the aggregate income of the most affluent African-Americans is $116 billion. Additionally, the collective purchasing power of African Americans from all income levels is projected to reach $981 billion by 2010.

Procter & Gamble Co. has sold Johnson Products Co., its African American hair-care products unit, to a local group of private investors including a husband-and-wife team.
Terms of the deal, announced Tuesday, weren’t disclosed.
Founded in 1954, Johnson Products has sales of more than $23 million a year. The company, whose brands include Gentle Treatment and Ultra Sheen, offers more than 30 hair-care products.
Buyer RCJP Acquisition Inc., a newly formed independent entity, comprises a team of industry veterans as well as Rustic Canyon/Fontis Partners, a private equity fund in Pasadena, and St. Cloud Capital, a private equity firm in Los Angeles.
Johnson Products will be led by Eric Brown and his wife, Renee Cottrell-Brown.
New York-based jewelry designers Tiret (Owned by Damon Dash) and British auto designers LSE, known for their two-door Range Rover conversions, have worked together to build the new Tiret Coupe. Based on the Range Rover Sport, the Tiret model is built with “diamonds and Swiss precision,” along with other luxe materials.
The SUV includes a surprising amount of diamonds built into the instrument cluster dials, with a luxurious “Tiret clock” built in. Tiret’s watchmaker Daniel Lazar designed the gauges and clock to give the vehicle a truly unique look and feel inside. The Nappa leather seats don’t hurt, either. For this model, engineers have built large, flared wheel arches to house the 22″ LSE alloys. “Simpsons” fans can now get their first peek at upcoming stamps featuring Homer, Marge, Lisa and Maggie. The U.S. Postal Service unveiled the designs Thursday morning.
“This is the biggest and most adhesive honor ‘The Simpsons’ has ever received,” said creator and executive producer Matt Groening, who personally drew the portraits of his iconic characters for the Post Office campaign.

Rapper LL Cool J received the Joseph Papp Racial Harmony Award last night (April 6) in New York.
According to Jewish media outlet JTA, The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding hosted a swanky affair at the home of Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons, who is also co-chair of the organization with founder Rabbi Marc Schneier.
The organization aims to promote black-Jewish and Muslim-Jewish relations.
“LL has long history of social and political activism. He is one person who is not recognized enough for his gifts,” Russell Simmons told AllHipHop.com. “I’m very happy to have honored him for his many contributions.”
In related news, LL Cool J will be featured in an upcoming episode of E! True Hollywood Story, which airs at 10:00 PM on April 15.

Hip-Hop mogul Jay-Z has teamed with Parlux Fragrances to introduce two new perfume labels, one for rap star Kanye West and the other for R&B songbird Rihanna.
Additionally, Jay-Z, who is a principal of Iconix Fragrances LLC, will have the option to purchase up to 4 million shares of Parlux’s at $5 a piece.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Jay-Z and an unnamed female singer are also close to finalizing a deal with Parlux.
Parlux makes perfumes and accessories for Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, GUESS?, Nicole Miller, Natori, Queen Latifah, XOXO, Ocean Pacific (OP), Andy Roddick and others.
In March of 2007, Iconix Brand Group purchased Rocawear from Jay-Z and Damon Dash for $204 million in cash, plus an additional $35 million dollars of Iconix stock to buy Rocawear.
Jay-Z remains in charge of product development, marketing and licensing for Rocawear.
Kanye West and Rihanna’s fragrances are due in stores in 2010.

In all catastrophes, there are always winners among the host of losers and victims. Bad times, like good ones, generate profits for someone. In the case of the present global economic meltdown, with our world at the brink and up to 50 million people potentially losing their jobs by the end of this year, one winner is likely to be criminal activity and crime syndicates. From Mexico to Africa, Russia to China, the pool of the desperate and the bribable is expanding exponentially, pointing to a sharp upturn in global crime. As illicit profits rise, so will violence in the turf wars among competing crime syndicates and in the desperate efforts by panicked governments to put a clamp on criminal activity.
Take Mexico, just now in the headlines. In late March, during her first trip there as Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton was repeatedly asked about the burst of narcotics-related violence in that country, the thousands of deaths that have gone with it, the patent inability of the Mexican military to contain, no less repress, the drug trade, and the possibility that the country might be at risk of becoming a “failed state.” Mexico itself may not be in danger of collapse, she replieddiplomatically, but a very real danger threatens both countries from a rise in violent crime along the U.S.-Mexican border. “The criminals and kingpins spreading violence are trying to corrode the foundations of law, order, friendship, and trust between us,” she declared at a press conference in Mexico City. To counter this danger, the secretary of state promised a militarized response that reflected the level of danger she imagined — a significant increase in U.S. anti-narcotics assistance, including the expedited delivery of Black Hawk helicopters.
The Mexican drug trade itself is nothing new. The illicit export traffic to the United States and the ensuing bloody competition among drug traffickers for access to the U.S. market have long concerned U.S. and Mexican law enforcement authorities. In the last two years, however, the violence associated with this commerce has grown to unprecedented levels as the leading crime syndicates — the Juárez Cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel, the Gulf Cartel, and Los Zetas — havesuccessfully resisted a fierce government crackdown, while fighting among themselves for control over key border access points. According to Mexico’s Attorney General, Eduardo Medina-Mora, 5,376 Mexicans were killed in drug-related violence in the first 11 months of 2008 compared to 2,477 during the same period in 2007, an increase of 117%. And as times get ever tougher for ordinary Mexicans, recruiting for the trade grows ever easier while the killings only multiply. U.S. law enforcement officials now believe inter-gang warfare is spilling into the United States in a serious way, producing rising murder rates in border states like Arizona, California, and Texas. Meanwhile, hunter-killer drones haven’t waited for Hollywood. As you sit in that movie theater in May, actual unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), pilotless surveillance and assassination drones armed with Hellfire missiles, will be patrolling our expanding global battlefields, hunting down human beings. And in the Pentagon and the labs of defense contractors, UAV supporters are already talking about and working on next-generation machines. Post-2020, according to these dreamers, drones will be able to fly and fight, discern enemies andincinerate them without human decision-making. They’re even wondering about just how to program human ethics, maybe even American ethics, into them.
