50 Cent Cleared In House Fire Incident

50 Cent has officially been cleared of any wrongdoing in the fire that destroyed that Long Island Mansion that housed his son Marquise and the mother of his child, Shaniqua Tompkins.

The rapper’s site, thisis50.com, reports that “the police department and insurance investigators ruled that there is absolutely no proof or evidence suggesting that Curtis Jackson or any affiliated parties were involved. Curtis Jackson has just been cleared of all the accusations. The investigation will continue until the guilty party is found.”

As XXLMag.com previously reported, the $1.4 estate was suspiciously set ablaze in May 2008 sending both Tompkins and Marquise to the hospital. While Fif was in the process of trying to get Tompkins evicted from the house prior to the incident, he denied having anything to do with it, instead pointing his finger at his ex. Tompkins did the same, with resulted in both filing restraining orders against one another.

These are heady times for white people in rap: This month has seen both the return of Eminem, the greatest white rapper of all time, and the debut of Asher Roth, the most commercially viable white rapper since Eminem. But that doesn’t mean hip-hop has gone post-racial in the ten years since Em broke out — just as always, the points of intersection between white people and rap music have been a head-swirling mix of the good, the bad, and the ugly. And it’s all here, in Vulture’s Condensed History of White People in Rap.

1981: Blondie releases “Rapture,” a pop song featuring one rap-style verse, in which Debbie Harry makes references to Fab Five Freddy, eating cars, and execution-style murder. It is one of the first hit songs to incorporate elements of hip-hop.

1983: The Beastie Boys, a trio of downtown hard-core kids, have an underground hit with sort-of-rap song “Cooky Puss,” a prank call to Carvel set to a hip-hop beat.

1984: Rick Rubin, then a student at NYU, meets Russell Simmons, then a fledgling artist manager, and the two create the hip-hop label Def Jam. They initially run the operations out ofRubin’s dorm room.

In what can arguably be considered a hip-hop public service announcement, Malice – one half of the Virgina rap duo Clipse – put out a short video on his newly launched blog to address his real life versus the drug-dealing life he rhymes about.

As previously reported Anthony “Geezy” Gonzalez, an associate of the Clipse,  was recently indicted for running a $10 million drug ring in Virgina Beach.

Without specifically mentioning the situation, Malice released a Vlog speaking about how his rap verses are more fantasy than reality. “There’s a lot of foolishness in hip-hop as my grandmother would say,” he said. “And I just want to say that I am and have been a part of the problem, the thing about it is I need foolishness in my hip-hop, I need foolishness in my movies. I happen to like that. To me a movie is not good unless you got some bricks being moved or a few people get killed.”

Just-Ice Breaks Down the History of the Blunt

When I interviewed Just-Ice about his classic ‘86 debut, Back to the Old School, for XXL recently, I asked him about his use of the term “blunts” in the track “Little Bad Johnny”—the first such mention in any rap song. His response was a detailed account of the evolution of every rapper’s favorite weedsmoking instrument. Naturally, this tangent didn’t make the piece, but I thought those interested in New York lore might appreciate Just’s breakdown of how the Jamaican practice of smoking weed out of large, hollowed-out tobacco leaves (known as “fronto leafs”) evolved into an NYC ‘hood staple and, eventually, an ubiquitous rap talking point.

“The reason why a cigar is called a blunt is very simple. If you’re old enough, you should remember El Productos. That is the original blunt. Besides a fronto leaf, cause a fronto leaf was always here. Truth is people just couldn’t get a hold of those unless you were Jamaican. So what you used to do is go to the store, get a tray bag of weed and an El Producto blunt. And you would unwrap them like a leaf and then you would put your weed in there and roll it back up.

El Producto blunts, they went out of business in I think ‘85, ‘86. After the El Producto blunt, ’cause that was a strong ass cigar, a lot of people couldn’t take the pressure in they chest from the weed and the cigar. So El Producto created a new cigar called the Fino. That’s after the blunt. So that was a little lighter tasting. ‘Cause blunt actually means harsh. Now, a lot of people wasn’t skilled enough to unwrap the Fino and rewrap it over correctly, so they started smoking Phillies. With Phillies, all you had to do was split them open, put the weed in and roll it up. But a lot of people who smoked weed didn’t like Phillies, ’cause it burned too fast. Then we left the Phillies…Oh shit, my food’s burning, hold on…

T-Pain To Star As ‘Frylock’ In Aqua Teen Hunger Force

Producer/rapper/singer T-Pain will play the character “Frylock” in the first ever live-action episode of Adult Swim’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force airs during the Adult Swim block of programming on the Cartoon Network.

The animated series is centered around three fast-food menu items and their lives in an unnamed city in New Jersey.

T-Pain will star in the season finale alongside Jon Benjamin, who will be featured as “Master Shake.”

“Carl’s” role will be played by newcomer Dave Long Jr, who won a Burger-King sponsored casting call in 2008.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force debuted in 2000 and has become one of the longest running cartoon’s on The Cartoon Network.

This season’s final episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force is scheduled to air on Adult Swim, Sunday, May 31 at 11:45pm (ET/PT).

Jay-Z Goes Post-Racial, “There Is No Such Thing As Black Music”

Hip-Hop mogul Jay-Z has reportedly shared his post-concert thoughts on fused music genres after a performance at the University of Arizona earlier this week alongside Kelly Clarkson and Third Eye Blind.

Speaking on his overall experience, Jigga also broke down racial barriers found within hip-hop.

“On the show as well were Third Eye Blind and Kelly Clarkson,” Jay explained. “I thought that to be the oddest pairing ever but, soon realized, it’s what I’ve always professed. There is no such thing as black music or white music only good or bad music. It’s stupid cool to like things that are not like you, and that goes for outside of music. If you’re an African American you can have a Jewish friend…I think concerts like this should happen more often…I’m putting that into the universe..next up Taylor Swift and Uncle Murda!!” (Rap Radar)

Jay was announced to headline the “Last Smash Platinum Blast” concert earlier this year.

The lineup for the first concert at Arizona Stadium since 1977 is literally one of a kind. The April 29 concert will feature Jay-Z, Kelly Clarkson, Third Eye Blind and The Veronicas. You won’t see the lineup for this concert anywhere else, as it’s not part of any tour. Presented by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona, it’s a one-night-only show. Young Jeezy Show Canceled Due To Swine Flu Outbreak

After 176 reported deaths from swine flu in Mexico and cases confirmed in nine countries, the impact of the influenza that the World Health Organization is on the verge of calling a global pandemic has begun to widen. In addition to the closure of more than 100 schools across the United States — including one district in Texas that is temporarily closing all schools until at least May 11 — two major events at the University of Delaware scheduled to take place on Thursday (April 30) were canceled due to the outbreak of the fast-spreading disease.

According to the DelawareOnline.com, a show by Young Jeezy at the Bob Carpenter Center has been called off, as well as a talk by journalist Gwen Ifill, the host of PBS’ “Washington Week” and moderator of last year’s vice-presidential debate. Jeezy was to perform with up-and-coming rapper Drake, but due to worries that at least 10 students on the school’s campus are suspected to be carrying the virus, the events were canceled.

In a letter to students on Wednesday, university president Patrick T. Harker wrote, “While the Centers for Disease Control have not yet confirmed any swine flu diagnoses, I have no doubt that these suspected cases are causing a great deal of concern among the entire campus community. The University’s first priority is the health and well-being of our students and employees.” The university will remain open and hold classes in the meantime, but will make decisions regarding large public gatherings on a case-by-case basis.

Just as superstar rapper Rick Ross is celebrating the release of his new album Deeper Than Rap, the real Rick Ross will be celebrating his release from prison next week.

AllHipHop.com has confirmed that “Freeway” Ricky Ross, the drug king pin who was at the center of a CIA cocaine-dealing scandal, will officially be released from prison on Monday (May 4).

Ross oversaw an Los Angeles based multi-state drug operation in the early 1980’s, which earned upwards of $2 million dollars per day at its height.

In 1996, he was sentenced to life in prison, after he attempted to purchase over 100 kilos of cocaine from an undercover federal agent.

Ross’ sentence was later reduced through appeals and after a series of explosive articles by the late Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Gary Webb.

Webb wrote a series titled “Dark Alliance” for the San Jose Mercury News, which exposed the C.I.A.’s role in importing cocaine into black communities to fund Contra rebels fighting in Nicaragua, as part of the Iran-Contra scandal.

The legacy of Big lives on triumphantly as Notorious took the top spot in Nielsen’s DVD sales chart in its debut week, beating out the likes of critically acclaimed The Wrestler and tween favorite Twilight, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Executive produced by Diddy, Biggie’s mother Violetta Wallace and former manager Mark Pitts, the biopic has grossed about $36 million at the box office and an additional $6 million overseas to date.

Notorious tells the story of the legendary Brooklyn rap star’s rise to fame. Starring Jamal Woolard, better known as Gravy, as the lead, the film also features Angela Bassett, Derek Luke, and Anthony Mackie in prominent roles.

One of hip hop’s most talked about married couples have split. VIBE has confirmed that Nas and Kelis are headed for a divorce. “I can confirm that she has filed for divorce,” a spokesperson for Kelis told VIBE. “We request the media to respect her privacy during this very difficult time.” At around 3:45pm PST, high-powered attorney Laura Wasser (who has also represented Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie, and Stevie Wonder) filed a divorce petition today on behalf of Kelis, citing irreconciable differences. The bombshell comes amid recent reports that the acclaimed rhymer and influential R&B vixen were expecting their first child together—a son. Kelis is currently seven months pregnant.

It was only last February when Nas spoke excitedly to MTV about the prospect of having a baby with Kelis. “Yeah, man, I find out what it’s gonna be next week, so I’m happy,” said the multiplatinum rapper, who also has a 15-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

Nas and Kelis first met in 2002 at a MTV Video Music Awards afterparty thrown by hip hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. “I wasn’t going to go, but I’m glad I did,” Nas told VIBE in June 2003. “Then at the afterparty, I met my girl.” Kelis remembered the meeting with her future husband vividly: “Everyone moves out of the way, and Nas stands up, and I put my hand out, and I’m like, Hey, I’m Kelis. And he goes, ‘Who?’… So I’m crawling into a fucking hole, and he’s like, ‘Wait-huh? What’s your name? And I’m like, Kelis, and he’s like, ‘Oh, well that’s great, because I’ve been waiting to make you my wife all these years.’” When Nas told her of his bold marital plans, she replied in typical Kelis form. “That’s great, because that’s all I wanna be.”
