HAWAIIAN GARDENS, Calif. — A Latino street gang waged a racist campaign to eliminate the city’s black residents through attempted murders and other crimes, according to federal racketeering indictments unsealed Thursday.

Five indictments charged a total of 147 members and associates of the Varrio Hawaiian Gardens gang, and federal and local agencies arrested 63 of them by early Thursday, U.S. Attorney Thomas P. O’Brien said at a news conference.

T.I. Requests Prison Delay, Seeks Minimum Security Facility

May 21, 2009 1 comment

via SOHH

Grammy-winning rapper Clifford “T.I.” Harris has reportedly requested additional time before reporting to jail next week and placement in a safer facility.ti_shotgun

The Atlanta-based emcee reportedly made his request Thursday (May 21) afternoon.

Harris asked a court today to let him remain free while he seeks placement in a minimum-security prison closer to his Atlanta home. He claims prison officials miscalculated his criminal history. His lawyer called a 2003 incident a “scuffle” with a mall cop. A pre-sentencing report says T.I. has a “serious history of violence.” (Fort Mill Times)

Tip will reportedly serve roughly ten months behind bars. Read more…

Jay-Z Buys Out Contract, Leaves Def Jam

via MTV

Now maybe we can get that Blueprint 3 album. Jay-Z has officially parted ways with his home for more than a decade, Def Jam. On Thursday morning (May 21), Hits Daily Double reported in its Rumor Mill section that Hov — who owed Def Jam one last album — bought himself out of his contract for $5 million.jayz-and-ace2

On Thursday afternoon, Jay contacted RapRadar.com and confirmed his departure.

“I can honestly say, working with Doug Morris and L.A. Reid has been a unique and fulfilling experience, and I respect them immensely,” Hov told the Web site. “I’ve been in the family for almost my entire career. Doug and I spoke directly and had one of the most unique ‘negotiations’ ever.”

Jay said that negotiation included a coin toss. “Doug won the toss, but we both won in the end,” Jay said. “I thank him for allowing me to be a completely independent artist. Not every artist can say they own or are given the opportunity to own all of their music.” Read more…

What If The Notorious B.I.G. Were Still Here For His 37th Birthday?

Arguably one of the greatest rappers ever to clutch the microphone, the Notorious B.I.G. celebrates what would have been his 37th birthday today. That’s right, the late great Frank White would have been just three years shy of officially being considered “over the hill.”

Since his untimely demise at the age of 24, there’s been much speculation for the past decade as to where the Brooklynite would stand in today’s rap climate. Would B.I.G. and his sidekick/boss Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs still be rocking together? What about Jay-Z? Lil Kim? Let’s take a look.

Bad Boy: Although B.I.G. was the label’s flagship artist and only on his second album (a double at that), a certain Mr. Comb’s track record of retaining his artists for the duration of their contractual obligations is not an impressive one (check: Craig Mack, Total, 112, Faith Evans, Mase, G. Dep, Black Rob, etc.) So, it’s hard to say whether Biggie himself would still be on the once-dominant Bad Boy.

Jay-Z: The two became bosom buddies and were on the verge of creating a supergroup together with Charli Baltimore, dubbed the Commission, before B.I.G. passed. But as history shows, money and power have ruined some of the strongest alliances in hip-hop. Many argue that if B.I.G. were here, then Hov’s career wouldn’t be as massive as it currently is.

Junior M.A.F.I.A.: Some of Biggie’s rap peers turned their heads in disgust when turmoil within the M.A.F.I.A. went public. The Lil Kim/ Lil Cease/ D-Roc fallout and, most recently, Kim verbally attacking B.I.G.’s mother Voletta Wallace over her portrayal in the movie “Notorious” must have B.I.G. turning in his grave. But if Big were still here, maybe the group would still be intact.

Lil’ Kim: Kim revisted the national spotlight these past two months with her appearance on “Dancing With the Stars,” but B.I.G. had his own plans to turn the starlet into a household name long ago. Critics say Kim’s rap career is on ice, but rest assured that if her mentor were still alive today, he’d have none of that. Read more…

How Music Gets Leaked

howarecordgetsleakedJust in case you were wondering, this is a summation of how songs spring a leak

via MakingtheMogul

At The Studio: As soon as a record is finished, anyone from the producer to the engineer to the band members can spoil the fun. (4 months before release)

At The Label: Labels send albums to companies like Sonic Arts to add a digital encryption code that can identify evildoers…but not necessarily stop them. (3 1/2 months before release)

By The Press: Considered to be the most common source of album leakage, watermarks or not. Oops! (3 months before release)

At The Plant: While in the process of being manufactured, a CD is ostensibly secured under lock and key, but sometimes copies fall off the back of trucks. (1 month before release)

At The Warehouse: Once CDs await shipping to retailers, it’s virtually guaranteed that a copy will find its way online. (2 weeks before release)

At Retail: And of course, once an album is for sale online and in stores, all bets are off.

Official story of 9/11 “almost entirely untrue”

via Daily Kos

Now, before you get your panties in a bunch, this is about a new book, titled “The Ground Truth: The Story Behind America’s Defense on 9/11″.

And before you get all outraged (The FAQ! The FAQ!), here is the author of the book, John Farmer:groundtruth

John Farmer served as Senior Counsel to the 9/11 Commission, where his areas of responsibility included assessing the national response to the terrorist attacks and evaluating the current state of national preparedness for terrorist attacks and natural disasters, he also served as attorney general of New Jersey (1999-2002), as chief counsel to Governor Whitman, and as a federal prosecutor. He recently served as a subject matter/rule of law expert on security to the special envoy for Middle East regional security. He is currently a partner of a New Jersey law form and an adjunct professor of national security law at Rutgers University Law School. His editorials and articles have appeared in “The New York Times” and elsewhere.

And my diary title are the words of Farmer’s publisher, Houghton Mifflin.

I wrote a couple of nights ago, here — ’9/11 Commission Report — Info Obtained Through Torture” — as to how much of what was published in the 9/11 Commission report was obtained through torture, and is therefore completely without credibility.

Scandalous enough, right?

Well, it gets worse. Read more…

KING Family Up In Arms Over Spielberg Biopic

mlk

via Variety

Is DreamWorks’ dream of bringing a Martin Luther King Jr. biopic to the bigscreen about to be shattered?

One day after Daily Variety reported that Steven Spielberg had gained full access to the King Estate for what would be the first-ever narrative feature about the slain civil rights leader, two of King’s children are threatening legal action over the project.

Bernice King and Martin Luther King III have been embroiled in a legal battle with brother Dexter King, who is chairman-CEO of the King Estate, over who controls the personal papers of their late mother, Coretta Scott King. Bernice King told the Associated Press on Tuesday: “This is a deal that Mr. Spielberg and his people … have entered into believing that they have the blessing of the King Estate. They don’t have the blessings of Bernice and Martin King.” Read more…

“I have been spending “special time” with Russell for about 4 months and in that time I have learned some subtle things about some in the black community that have surprised me. I must say that while it has been a bit of a challenge for me, it has also been a wonderful learning experience. I realize that in this day of Obama and change that there is still a tremendous amount of poverty, suffering and pain in the black community, and for that I am deeply sorry. But, I have to say the angry responses to those realities are sometimes misdirected….Just for the record, I am nobody’s white b*tch, gold digger or fame chaser.

Are Spiritual Encounters All In Your Head?

virtual_brain

via NPR

According to polls, there’s a 50-50 chance you have had at least one spiritual experience — an overpowering feeling that you’ve touched God, or another dimension of reality.

So, have you ever wondered whether those encounters actually happened — or whether they were all in your head? Scientists say the answer might be both.

If you’re looking for evidence that religion is in your head, you need look no further than Jeff Schimmel. The 49-year-old Los Angeles writer was raised in a Conservative Jewish home. But he never bought into God — until after he was touched by a being outside of himself.

“Yeah,” Schimmel says, “I was touched by a surgeon.”

About a decade ago, Schimmel had a benign tumor removed from his left temporal lobe. The surgery was a snap. But soon after that — unknown to him — he began to suffer mini-seizures. He’d hear conversations in his head. Sometimes the people around him would look slightly unreal, as if they were animated. Read more…

Malcolm X’s Grandson Breaks Silence!

In celebration of Malcolm X’s life, GIANT magazine caught up with his elusive grandson, Malcolm Shabazz. I had the opportunity of meeting Shabazz and I can attest to what he himself will openly admit, that being he is a young man looking for his way in a very unfamiliar world. He shared a lot of these sentiments with me that are echoed in this article.  I hope he pulls it together, he has a great spirit.

malcolm_shabazz

via NewsOne

INTRODUCTION

His grandmother, Betty Shabazz, widow of Malcolm X, was killed in a fire he started 11 years ago. He was 12 years old. He had been shuttled in and out of correctional institutions until his release from Attica Prison in February 2007. Now MALCOLM SHABAZZ, 24, is on a mission: to clear his name, stay out of jail and rise from the ashes of his past.

During the course of a long-standing exclusive correspondence with Aliya S. King for NewsOne and GIANT magazine, Malcolm spoke candidly and introspectively about a checkered childhood, an unstable family life, and the burden of being the sole male heir to an icon whose life and legacy have transformed millions of lives.

The following are woven excerpts from hours of conversation with Shabazz:

People often describe me as troubled. I’m not going to say that I’m not. But I’m not crazy. I have troubles. A lot of us do. But you need to understand where I’m coming from and why I am the way I am. Considering what I’ve been through, it’s a miracle that I’ve been able to hold it together. I’m just trying to find my way. [I’ve read newspaper stories about me that] say, “Experts testify [that boy] is psychotic.” The way they describe me is wrong — bi-polar, depression, pyro, whatever. I know I’m not at all. Some of the things I’ve been through, the average person would have cracked.

All my life, I’ve had [moments where] I’ve lived in the lap of luxury in the Trump Towers and not wanted for a single thing. And the very next day I’m [living in] a slum in a gang-infested Philly neighborhood, eating fried dough three times a day. One minute, I’m in a situation with structure and discipline. The next minute I’m running the streets with no supervision at all. One of my aunts has a friend who is very devoted to his children. I was hanging out with them one day and all he talked about was [their] schedule and sports and taking his kids here and there. I wish I had that. I wish I had someone whose purpose in life was to take care of me. That’s how white people do it. They plan for [their] kids. We don’t. That’s cause we don’t plan our kids. I wasn’t planned. Whoa!!!: Woody Banks $5 Million from American Apparel Rabbi Billboard

I did not think these guys would buckle and give up such a huge payday to Woody(pause). They were wrong for using his image but was that campaign that successful that his lawyers could command that type of money? Read the story below:

Picture 95

Picture 96

NEW YORK — Woody Allen agreed Monday to a $5 million settlement in his lawsuit accusing American Apparel of using an image parodying him as a rabbi without his permission.

Both sides announced the settlement _ to be paid by American Apparel Inc.’s insurance company _ on the morning a trial was to start in federal court in Manhattan.

Reading from a statement outside court, Allen said he hoped the outcome “would discourage American Apparel or anyone else from ever trying such a thing again.” His lawyers said the $5 million appeared to be the largest amount ever paid to settle a lawsuit brought under state privacy statutes.

American Apparel president Dov Charney told reporters it wasn’t his decision to settle. The Los Angeles-based company’s insurance company “controlled the defense” in the case, he said.

“I’m not sorry for expressing myself,” he said.

John Legend Commencement Speech: Praises “Politics Of Empathy,” Condemns Falsehoods That Led To War, Financial Crisis

Source: Huffington Post

First Barack,Michelle, and now John Legend. Commencement speeches are way cool as of right now. I have an excerpt below from Huff Post:

When you look at the list of crises we face, there is a common thread that ties many of them together.

The people who created these crises or allowed them to happen either didn’t look hard enough for the truth, or didn’t listen to those voices that could tell them where the truth lived.

We lost thousands of lives and spent billions (possibly trillions) of dollars fighting in and rebuilding Iraq, all based on the false premise that there were weapons of mass destruction or that Saddam Hussein was in cahoots with Al Qaeda and caused 9/11.

All falsehoods that were allowed to poison the debate while dissension and fact-checking came too little, too late.

We’ve spent trillions of dollars bailing out banks with phantom profits that were selling financial products whose values had no grounding in reality.

The fact that some of them didn’t even understand their own product didn’t stop them from getting millions of people to buy into it.

Meanwhile the regulators and the press failed to ask the right questions and bear witness to the house of cards until it had already collapsed.

From the war in Iraq to credit-default swaps to the internet bubble to the real estate bubble, too often we got caught up in the hype and failed to see the real truth…

Too often we become apathetic. We see the lies, we see the obfuscation, the deception. But we fail to point it out.

We’re afraid to rain on the parade. Afraid to rock the boat. Afraid to pursue the truth.
