ATLANTA (AP) – It’s been two months since 2-year-old Cori pulled the gold stud from her left earlobe, and the piercing is threatening to close as her mother, Maggie Anderson, hunts for a replacement.

It’s not that the earring was all that rare—but finding the right store has become a quest of Quixotic proportions.

Maggie and John Anderson of Chicago vowed four months ago that for one year, they would try to patronize only black-owned businesses. The “Empowerment Experiment” is the reason John had to suffer for hours with a stomach ache and Maggie no longer gets that brand-name lather when she washes her hair. A grocery trip is a 14-mile odyssey.

“We kind of enjoy the sacrifice because we get to make the point … but I am going without stuff and I am frustrated on a daily basis,” Maggie Anderson said. “It’s like, my people have been here 400 years and we don’t even have a Walgreens to show for it.”

So far, the Andersons have spent hundreds of dollars with black businesses from grocery stores to dry cleaners. But the couple still hasn’t found a mortgage lender, home security system vendor or toy store. Nonetheless, they’re hoping to expand the endeavor beyond their Chicago home.

A rare blue diamond has sold for a record 10.5 million Swiss francs ($9.5m; £6.2m) at auction in Geneva.

It weighs 7.03 carats, is smaller than a penny piece, and is one of only a handful of blue diamonds in existence.

The anonymous phone bidder has yet to name the gem, mounted on a platinum ring, auctioneers Sotheby’s said.

The diamond was found in Cullinan mine in South Africa last year, and its clarity was graded as flawless – the highest designation.

Auctioneer David Bennett said: “It is a new world record price for a blue diamond.”

It had a pre-sale catalogue estimate of 6.8 million to 10 million francs, excluding commission.

VISA Testing Credit Card w/code to combat fraud

A credit card with a built-in display is being tested by Visa with the aim of reducing online fraud.

The Emue Card generates and displays a unique code each time it is used.

Developers say that the new technology would make it very hard for fraudsters, as any transaction would require the pin to generate the code.

The card is currently being trialled by 500 employees of Deloitte with the aim of assessing the technology by the end of the year.

The new technology comes against a growing backdrop of fraud. While chip and pin technology has helped reduce crime at the tills, when it comes to phone, internet, and mail order fraud – known in the industry as card-not-present or CNP fraud – the figures are growing every year and now make up more than 50% of all credit card fraud.

These transactions ask for the 16-digit code on the front of the card, and expiry date and some also ask for the three digit security card on the back. All of these details are available to a criminal who has a stolen card.

Apple‘s new ad takes solid aim at Microsoft’s recent much-talked-about Laptop Hunters ad series with the Apple style fully intact. In other words, it’s really, really smug. The ad has a Lauren-type actress give her list of specifications, and of course, bunch by bunch, the drab-suited PCs are disqualified until she gets to “something that works,” at which point all the remaining PCs leave. Since we’ve been seeing some flames for criticizing the Laptop Hunters series, let me be one of many to say that I hate this and all other “I’m a Mac” ads. Here is the second trailer for the much anticipated Disney release, that is inclusive of a “Black” main character, the storied princess we’ve come to know in the “Princess & The Frog” storyline. What I do notice is that this flick features my main man Baron St. Croix who has become a fixture in Hollywood this past year.  Anyway, this is gonna kill in the Christmas season!

The Rolls-Royce 200EX ($TBA) is a more modern and more approachable take on the stuffy Rolls-Royce design. Styling is clearly all Rolls, but the smaller wheelbase and overall size means you’ll look less like the king of a South African country and more like the king of your block.

It’s powered by a V12 and has, as expected, a luxurious interior with natural grain Crème Light leather, wood veneer, Cornsilk carpets, and a cashmere blend headliner. While Rolls is still calling this a concept, word on the street is that there will be little changes made before an official 2010 production model, tentatively called the RR4.

AT&T Has a Prepaid Twist: Talk All Day for $3

Some phone users can’t commit to monthly plans. Instead these so-called prepaid users pay for buckets of minutes — effectively paying as they go.

Some subset of this group, AT&T’s market research indicates, won’t even commit to minutes — hence a new product offering. Starting Monday, AT&T will offer prepaid users the ability to pay $3 to make unlimited local and long-distance calls for one day. Pay $3 online in the morning, use the phone all day, then hang up and be done with it.

Mark Siegel, a spokesman for AT&T, said the theory behind the offering is that “prepaid callers are heterogeneous.”

Mr. Siegel said the company did not expect the plan’s potential customers to come from any particular age group or demographic. Rather, he said, “it’s for people who want to use the phone for a day without counting minutes.”

Flat-Panel TV Sales Jump %23 over last year, Vizio leads the way

The weak economy hasn’t stalled the American consumer’s flat-panel fix.

Following a decline last year, North American sales of flat-panel TVs surged during the first quarter of 2009, according to a report released Monday from market research company DisplaySearch. With demand often outpacing supply on some models, 7.2 million flat-panel TVs flew off the shelves, an increase of 23 percent from the first quarter of 2008.

Aggressive pricing followed by Circuit City’s liquidation tempted consumers in search of bargains, according to the DisplaySearch report titled “Quarterly Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report.”

Former small fry Vizio earned the No. 1 spot as the best-selling LCD vendor for the first quarter, a status it hasn’t held since the second quarter of 2007. Vizio’s share of the market jumped to 18.9 percent and was the only company to show a sales gain from the fourth quarter of 2008. “Vizio is a relatively young TV brand in the U.S. marketplace, but their strong alignment with mass merchant and warehouse club retailers seemed to put them in the right place at the right time with growing channels,” said Paul Gagnon, DisplaySearch director of North America TV Research.

DJ Qbert Creates Online DJ School

Critically acclaimed turntablist DJ Qbert has launched the first ever video-based online DJ school.

Now known as QSU (Qbert Scratch University), the San Francisco native brings over 20-years of experience to the online curriculum.

The courses range from basic cutting techniques, to advance classes detailing “battle” strategies to be used in competition with rival DJs.

Partnered in the project with Qbert is ArtistWorks, Inc, a company that develops Internet-based businesses for musicians by incorporating cutting edge distance learning and video technology.

The group utilizes a proprietary VMS (Video/Media Management System) for students to send their practice sessions over to Qbert.

Big Daddy Kane Plays Free Summer Concert In BK

Legendary rap giant Big Daddy Kane will be coming back to his hometown to play at this year’s “Celebrate Brooklyn” concert series in Prospect Park.

Presented by Lyricist Lounge, the show will feature Kane going through a set list of his greatest hits along with the accompaniment of a live band as well as unannounced special guests. Before the seminal rapper’s performance, there will be a screening of Anthony Marshall’s short documentary BDK: The Big Daddy Kane Story.

Kane’s free concert is scheduled for Saturday, August 8 at 7 p.m

T.I. Releases Farewell Address Before Reporting to Prison

In a few weeks, I will begin a one-year prison sentence for being in the possession of illegal firearms.  Where I come from, having a gun is just part of everyday life.  But, through this painful process of going to court and being convicted, I realized that I had to make a change.  I made some bad decisions.  I broke the law and will accept my punishment.  With deep reflection about where my life was headed, I have begun the process of redemption, and decided that before I go to prison, I want to speak to young people about responsibility as a lifestyle.

I hope that through my mistakes, young people can begin to learn, as I did, that we have to put our guns down and start to give our guns back.  It pains me inside to hear about so many of our people dying because of gun violence.  Just in the past weeks, a 13-year old boy was shot in the head in Harlem, a 17 and 19-year old were murdered in a double homicide in Queens and a 15 year old was chased, beaten, shot and burned in Chicago.

We’ve obtained pictures of a device that we’re told is the “Onyx,” a 3G-enabled GSM BlackBerry that looks like a slightly sexier, smaller version of the Bold with some Niagara / Tour genes thrown in for good measure. We’d previously heard that this phone is ultimately destined for AT&T (while a UMA-enabled version might come to T-Mobile as the Driftwood), which definitely takes the edge off of the impending 8900 launch over there — but then again, this is a prototype, and it’ll be many moons (at best) before this thing gets launched. Every time we look at the Bold, it looks more out of proportion — and sexy beasts like this one certainly aren’t helping matters. Keep on keepin’ on, RIM.

With the turntablist game barely gasping for air and with the youth needing an injection of some Hip-Hop 101, I hope DJ Hero has the same results. When a twelve-year-old can build on Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe” with his Pops after playing Guitar Hero. I can only hope the same for a Hip-Hop discussion.
