It seems that rapper Jay Rock has been arrested for suspicion to being involved in a drive-by shooting. Having just toured the country along with him and Nipsey Hussle on the LAX tour last month, I hope that this is some awful mistake and that he can return to being one of the rising stars of Hip Hop. No concrete details yet but we will keep you posted as information comes in.

Having been unanimously voted in as this season’s Most Valuable Player in the National Basketball League, Nike are paying homage to King James with a special MVP edition of The Six Witness. An injection for men appears to be just as effective at preventing pregnancy as the birth control pill, finds new research that could revolutionize contraception.
In testing in China, only one man in 100 fathered a child while on the injections, the study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism reports.
The contraceptive is a form of testosterone that is injected into the buttocks once a month. It works by temporarily blocking sperm production.
Chinese researchers injected 1,045 healthy Chinese men aged 20 to 45 years with a 500 mg of testosterone undecanoate in oil, once a month for 24 months. All of the study participants had had at least one child and all their female partners, aged 18 and 38 years, also had normal reproductive function.
They found the contraceptive was almost 99 per cent effective, with a failure rate of only 1.1 per 100 men. Read more…

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Tuesday it’s time for California to study whether to legalize and tax marijuana for recreational use, though he’s not yet advocating for such a change.
The governor was asked about a recent Field Poll showing that 56 percent of registered voters support legalizing and taxing marijuana to raise revenues for cash-strapped California. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, has proposed legislation that would legalize the drug for recreational use, rather than just medical purposes.
“Well, I think it’s not time for that, but I think it’s time for a debate,” Schwarzenegger said. “I think all of those ideas of creating extra revenues, I’m always for an open debate on it. And I think we ought to study very carefully what other countries are doing that have legalized marijuana and other drugs, what effect did it have on those countries?”
He said his native Austria is revisiting some of its marijuana laws, for instance. The Austrian Parliament last year authorized cultivation of medical marijuana.
“It could very well be that everyone is happy with that decision and then we could move to that,” Schwarzenegger said of other nations’ legalization policies. “If not, we shouldn’t do it. But just because of raising revenues … we have to be careful not to make mistakes at the same time. Read more…

DETROIT — Basketball legend Dave Bing was elected Tuesday as Detroit’s mayor through the end of the year, sweeping the incumbent from office in the city with myriad problems.
“The real work starts now,” Bing said to loud cheers during his victory speech.
“What we will bring … is efficiency, transparency, honesty and integrity back to the mayor’s office,” he said.
With all but two of 629 precincts reporting, Bing had 52.3 percent of the vote, or 48,951 votes, to 47.7 percent, or 44,703 votes, for Ken Cockrel Jr. Both are Democrats.
Bing, 65, will be mayor through 2009, serving the balance of the term that belonged to Democrat Kwame Kilpatrick, who resigned in September and went to jail after admitting he lied during a civil trial to cover up an affair with his chief of staff.
Bing must run again in the regular Aug. 4 nonpartisan primary and win the Nov. 3 general election to hold the mayor’s seat for a full four years.
The founder of steel manufacturer The Bing Group announced his run for mayor the day after Kilpatrick stepped down as part of pleas to two criminal cases.
Cockrel, 43, was City Council president before Kilpatrick’s departure automatically promoted him to the mayor’s office. He’ll go back to that job now.
Bing praised Cockrel for running “a hard-fought campaign” and said he looked forward to working together when Cockrel returns to the council.
About 15 percent of the city’s registered voters participated. A proposal to revise the city charter also was on the ballot and passed overwhelmingly.
“I don’t like either one; it’s like tossing a coin. But I’ll give Bing a chance,” Bonnie Brookslee, 78, said after voting at King High School, east of downtown. “Cockrel went along too much with Kwame when he was on the council.” Read more…

PAULA Abdul is hitting the stage for a live perform ance on “American Idol” tomorrow night.
She’ll leave the judging to others to sing “I’m Just Here for the Music” — the first single off an album due out in the fall.
Since she’s preparing to return to the music scene, the timing seemed right to bare her soul over the drug habit that she’s recently kicked.
For the first time, Abdul reveals how hard it was for her to detox from a 12-year-long painkiller addiction.
“I could have killed myself,” she tells this month’s issue of Ladies’ Home Journal.
The withdrawal was “the worst thing. I was freezing cold, then sweating hot, then chattering and in so much pain. It was excruciating. But at my very core, I did not like existing the way I had been.”
Although Abdul claims that she never filmed an episode of “Idol” while under the influence — and vehemently denied any illegal drug use in the past — she did spend at least part of the last decade relying on painkillers and Chinese medicine to quietly combat her injury-induced chronic debilitating pain, she says.
Years of cheerleading, dancing injuries and two crashes — a 1992 car crash and a 1993 plane crash that required 15 spinal surgeries — contributed to a diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome in 2005. The illness left her with disabling pain, chattering teeth and shingles-like lesions.
To relieve the symptoms, Abdul wore a patch that delivered a pain medication that she claims was 80 times more potent than morphine. She also sometimes took a muscle relaxer, she said.
But that’s all ancient history. Last Thanksgiving, Abdul gave up the meds for good during a stay at Calsbad, Calif.’s La Costa Resort and Spa.
Now, she’s in shape and gearing up to to relaunch her music career.

A police chase in Peñitas ends in a load of drugs, but what police say they’ve never seen is what the smugglers wrote on the bundles of marijuana.
Peñitas Police Chief Oscar Ontiveros says written on top of some of the packages were the words “Obama-USA” and “Obama-USA, Calderon-Mexico.”
Investigators say the message may have something to do with President Obama’s recent trip to Mexico.
Ontiveros says, “I think they’re trying to mock the president’s efforts to fight drugs.”
The drugs will be turned over to state or federal agents for further investigation.

Lil Kim was voted off of the popular dance show Dancing With The Stars yesterday evening (May 5), just before reaching the semifinals with partner Derek Hough. 
Despite receiving high scores from the judges, Kim came into this weeks show with the second lowest score of 52 out of 60 points.
Before being eliminated Lil Kim and Hough did the Waltz as well as the Salsa during their performances.
It came as a surprise to the judges and audience a like that Kim was eliminated, despite contestant Ty Murray delivering the worst performances in the nine weeks the show has aired.
Kim’s elimination from the show prompted the host Dancing With The Stars host Tom Bergeron to state that the evening had went terribly wrong.
About Kim’s performances on the show, Simon Cowell – like judge Len Goodman stated the rapper “has been one of the best dancers” to ever appear on the show.
“This is one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever experienced in my life. because I brought people who never watched the show,” Lil Kim said.
Lil Kim recently premiered a music video for her new single “Download” featuring T-Pain and Charlie Wilson.

Scientists unveiled on Tuesday what they hope will be one of the world’s fastest biofuel vehicles, powered by waste from chocolate factories and made partly from plant fibers. Its makers hope the racer will go 145 mph and give manufacturers ideas about how to build more ecologically friendly vehicles.
The car runs on vegetable oils and chocolate waste that has been turned into biofuel. The steering wheel is made out of plant-based fibers derived from carrots and other root vegetables, and the seat is built of flax fibre and soybean oil foam. The body is also made of plant fibers.
Scientists at the University of Warwick say their car is the fastest to run on biofuels and also be made from biodegradable materials. It has been built to Formula 3 specifications about the car’s size, weight, and performance.
Their claims cannot be independently verified.
They hope it can reach speeds of over 145 mph when it is tested on a racetrack in a few weeks time. They have driven it at around 60 mph and are now making final adjustments to the engine before driving it at top speed.
Warwick’s project manager James Meredith said their model shows that it is possible to build a fast, efficient, environmentally friendly car.
The car, named the “WorldFirst Formula 3 racing car,” will go on display at several races including the European Grand Prix and Britain’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Rapper Eminem has revealed a gaming application that could find its way into the iTunes application store.
The rapper announced the game on his Twitter page and posted a link to the game, which is also titled Relapse.
Eminem has had a tense relationship with iTunes.
The two have battled in court twice, the first time over a commercial that featured Eminem’s track “Lose Yourself,” the second over downloading royalties.
In 2005, Eminem’s Eight Mile Style publishing company agreed to an undisclosed financial settlement over an iPod commercial that featured “Lose Yourself,” without permission.
In March of 2009, FBT Productions, a company affiliated with Eminem, sued Universal Records in an attempt to get higher royalty rates on all digital sales through Apple’s iTunes App Store.
FBT argued that their tracks were “masters,” which were then reproduced as digital copies.
While Eminem was not a party to that lawsuit, FBT, he would have made millions, had FBT one the case, which went in favor of Universal, after a judge ruled that a sold online is no different than a song bought in a store.
It appears that the various legal skirmishes have not impacted Eminem’s relationship with Apple thus far, although the rapper’s proposed game may not help the relationship. Read more…

Dressed in a suit, this person would not look out of place in a busy street in a modern city.
The clay sculpture, however, portrays the face of the earliest known modern European – a man or woman who hunted deer and gathered fruit and herbs in ancient forests more than 35,000 years ago.
It was created by Richard Neave, one of Britain’s leading forensic scientists, using fossilised fragments of skull and jawbone found in a cave seven years ago.
His recreation offers a tantalising glimpse into life before the dawn of civilisation. It also shows the close links between the first European settlers and their immediate African ancestors.
To sculpt the head, Mr Neave called on his years of experience recreating the appearance of murder victims as well as using careful measurements of bone.
It was made for the BBC2 series The Incredible Human Journey. This will follow the evolution of humans from the cradle of Africa to the waves of migrations that saw Homo sapiens colonise the globe.
The head has taken pride of place on the desk of Alice Roberts, an anthropologist at Bristol University, who presents the programme. Read more…

Facebook tried to buy Twitter. Google and Microsoft have been giving the red-hot Internet-messaging startup the eye. But we hear it’s Apple that’s closest to sealing a deal, possibly for as much as $700 million.
A source who’s plugged into the Valley’s deal scene and has been recruited by Apple for a senior position says Apple and Twitter are in serious negotiations, with the goal of unveiling a deal by June 8, when Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference launches in San Jose.
Twitter turned down a $500 million offer in cash and stock from Facebook, in part because Twitter’s investors couldn’t agree on whether Facebook’s stock was worth as much as Facebook said it was. But Apple could easily pay cash. A source familiar with the thinking of Twitter’s board says the company would be hard-pressed to refuse an all-cash offer in the range of $700 million. (Is Twitter really worth that? Since it’s business is nothing but a fantasy at this point, any valuation, high or low, is a matter of make-believe.)
What does Twitter, an adorable but unprofitable startup, have to do with a hardware company like Apple? The iPhone is the obvious driver of the deal: The many iPhone apps like Tweetie that people use to post Twitter messages are hot sellers for Apple. But Apple gets the benefit of Twitter-addicted iPhone users whether or not it owns Twitter. And it seems like an odd cultural fit, since Apple’s hardly known for its Web prowess. The challenge for Owen Van Natta and his boss Jonathan Miller is outlined in an article in Monday’s Times, summarized neatly by this chart showing that the country’s leading social networking service is now losing users. 
The article points out that Mr. Van Natta, a former executive of Amazon and Facebook, has only six friends on MySpace. And in my experience in talking to technology executives, journalists and suburban parents, Facebook comes up frequently and MySpace never does. The only exceptions are my friends in the music industry, where every band still seems to have a MySpace page.
Clearly, my social set is hardly representative. ComScore finds MySpace has younger users with lower incomes than Facebook. When I spoke last fall at Ferris State University in western Michigan, a school that focuses on career training, the students I asked were split about evenly between Facebook and MySpace. (No one used Twitter.)
When I reread the article I wrote in 2006 about the high hopes News Corporation had for MySpace, I see a litany of ideas that didn’t pan out. The company wanted to make the site a portal for its own video; Hulu fills that need. It wanted to create a marketplace for person-to-person commerce, a more social eBay. There’s little sign of that outside of some music sales. And it’s not so clear that the site has continued to weave itself into the communications patterns of people.
So let’s bring the Bits readers into a bit of crowdsourced reporting. Do you use MySpace? Do you know anyone who does? Why? Please post your experience in the comments below.

Clearly there is some inertia in social networking. You’ll be lonely if you are the first one of your friends to move to a new site (unless you live within 20 miles of University Avenue in Palo Alto, Calif., in which case you might be cool).
