[video] Steve Rifkind scolds Asher Roth, Goodfellas Style…LMAO

Yo, this is a hilarious spoof of the infamous gaffe by not only Asher Roth but also the historic, monumental gaffe made by Steve Rifkind when he declared Roth’s album amongst the “Top 5″ ever! Blasphemous, how dare this dude be allowed to get away with such a marketing ploy all the while shitting on the legends in this thing of ours. I appreciated Hip Hop more when it was run like a secret society or La Costra Nostra, atleast the gatekeepers were a lot more militant about who they let in and if there were any indiscretionary mishaps they would send the Hammers out. We need to get back to that and tighten up these loose ships.

LeBron wins first MVP award, source tells AP

via MSNBC

CLEVELAND – Unstoppable at both ends of the floor this season, LeBron James is the NBA’s Most Valuable Player.

James, who led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a team-record 66 regular-season wins and the top overall seed in the playoffs, will receive the award Monday, a person with knowledge of the choice told The Associated Press. James chose Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, his alma mater, for the presentation, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement has not been made.lebron-james

The Cavaliers announced a “major” news conference for 4 p.m. at the school, but did not give the reason.

James is the first Cavaliers player to win the award. He averaged 28.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.2 assists this season, his sixth as a pro. He also finished second in voting for defensive player of the year, making him perhaps the league’s most dominant two-way player since Michael Jordan.

At 24 years, 106 days on the final day of the regular season, James is the youngest player to win the award since Moses Malone (24 years, 16 days) in 1978-79. Wes Unseld was 23 when he won it in 1968-69.

James vied all season for MVP honors with the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant and Miami’s Dwyane Wade. The three played on the U.S. gold medalist Olympic team last summer and seemed to upstage each other nightly.

Focused right from the start, the 6-foot-8, 250-pound James sharpened his already formidable skills this season. Read more…

Supreme Court Says No ‘Fleeting Expletives’ on TV

u2bono03

With the unprecedented  amounts of gaffes on TV this is just in time, but if they don’t step in to curb all the innuendos in these commercials than monitoring the shows is kind of pointless.

via AdAge

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — In a decision that — for now, at least — makes even the most random utterances of expletives punishable by law, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld an earlier ruling stating that so-called fleeting expletives are not suitable for broadcast on public airwaves.

Even so, a cautious optimism has emerged among TV networks that things will eventually work in their favor. A lower court has already ruled that sanctions against the random expression of profanity on live broadcasts are “arbitrary” and difficult to enforce, and the Supreme Court has remanded the case back to that same legal body.

In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court essentially reversed an earlier ruling in a case known as Federal Communications Commission v. Fox Television Stations, in which the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit said the idea of sanctioning random utterances of profanity is “capricious,” and such expressions are not as dangerous or harmful to viewers as regular use of profanity that has sexual or excretory connotations. The case stems from a 2002 broadcast of the Billboard Music Awards on News Corp.’s Fox during which Cher and Nicole Richie uttered expletives, as well as a 2003 NBC Golden Globes broadcast on NBC during which U2 frontman Bono declared, “This is really, really fucking brilliant.” Read more…

Twitter and “Face Book” Are Older Than the Internet

twitter_book

via Switched

Well, it turns out all these fancy social networking tools we’ve grown to love so much aren’t really all that new. Thanks to projects that have been digitizing newspaper archives, researchers have turned up references to “Face Book” and “Twitter” several decades before the Internet was even a glint in a military scientist’s eye.

An article from the August 24, 1902 edition of the Boston Daily Globe titled, “Face Book The New Fad,” describes a party game in which participants draw caricatures of each other. And a 1942 Washington Post article, titled “Think Before You Twitter,” was all about proper etiquette for small talk.

And it’s not just Web site names that have been circulating forever. William Steig, a children’s book author, was writing stories in what many would recognize as IM and Twitter shorthand back in 1962 (Using “I M 2″ instead of “I am too”). There is even a transcription of a speech by Abraham Lincoln that appears to contain an emoticon.

Turns out there really is nothing new in the world. [From: NY Times, Business Insider, andDesign Observer]

‘DJ Hero’ Vs. ‘Scratch’ As Music Game-Makers Turn To Turntables

via Billboard

Just how important is the upcoming “DJ Hero” game to Activision Blizzard?dj-hero

So important that the videogame publisher tried to buy a rival game that was scheduled for release before “DJ Hero” hit stores. When that failed, Activision acquired the game’s developer in hopes of stalling the process.

At least that’s the claim made in a recently resolved lawsuit against Activision by Genius Products, the publisher of “Scratch—The Ultimate DJ.” In March, a Los Angeles County superior court judge ordered Activision to return to Genius the “Scratch” source code, which Activision had acquired earlier this year after buying 7 Digital, the company that was developing “Scratch” for Genius.

Until this drama unfolded, “Scratch” was merely a footnote in the music-game market. Genius Products is a DVD distribution company that’s never been involved in making a videogame before, and only a handful of press outlets have mentioned the pending “Scratch” game. Activision, meanwhile, has racked up more than $2 billion in sales from its “Guitar Hero” franchise alone and is one of the largest videogame publishers in the world.

But the David vs. Goliath tale drummed up all kinds of attention for the smaller game’s expected June release, which may have been what Genius Products intended all along. And the fact that Activision would walk into this mess speaks volumes about how crucial “DJ Hero” is to music gaming. Read more…

A Social Media Strategy Outline For Bands

via Hypebot

This flow-chart is attempt to create the framework of a basic social media strategy for a band.  The chart shows the basic tools of a social media strategy and it illustrates the primary movement of fans within these tools.  It also attempts to document what the purpose of each site/tool is.  This is by no means a full or complete strategy.  Various other outposts sites or tools can be added (such as a PureVolume page) as desired.  This is also only a framework.  How and to what extend each tool is used is up to the person executing the strategy.

Note: blogs/press refers to third-party blogs that write about the artist, not an actual artist blog.  That would fall under the “artist website”.

[Op-Ed] This X Doesn’t Mark the Spot: The Wolverine Movie Lacks the Series’ Socially Significant Themes

wolverine01

via HuffPost

Big comic book and scifi movie extravaganzas can make big points about society, sometimes even catching the zeitgeist, as we saw with 2008′s The Dark Knight. The X-Men series has been at the forefront of this, exploring the changing nature of humanity, our relationship with technology, and the concept of otherness in a mass society. And doing it amidst unique powers, cool tech, and some bracing action.

Unfortunately, most of that which intrigues one intellectually and moves one emotionally is missing in the fourth entry in the franchise, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

It’s not a bad movie. (And it does provide an amusing explanation for one of the most famous events of the 1970s.) In fact, it is shaping up as a big hit. It’s a pretty good action flick, but the movie lacks the intellectual depth and soul frequently found in the X-Men series. I was entertained. But it’s going to fall far short measured against the Star Trek and Terminator movies coming later this month in the cultural significance sweepstakes.

The basic plot seems borrowed, at least in part, from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1985 action vehicle, Commando. Somebody is killing members of Wolverine’s old special ops team, and his old commanding officer visits him to discuss it. Bad things ensue.

Like the reboot of Batman, this picture is an origin story. But it explains, well, nothing, before jumping into the action. Read more…

4th-Grader Questions Rice on Waterboarding

via Washington Post

Days after telling students at Stanford University that waterboarding was legal “by definition if it was authorized by the president,” former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice was pressed again on the subject yesterday by a fourth-grader at a Washington school.

Rice, in her first appearance in Washington since leaving government, was at the Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation’s Capital before giving an evening lecture at the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue. She held forth amiably before a few dozen students about her love of Israel, travel abroad and the importance of learning languages, then opened the floor to their questions. condi

The questions had been developed beforehand by students with their teachers and had not been screened by Rice. At first, they were innocuous: What was it like growing up in segregated Birmingham, Ala.? What skill did she want to be best known for?

Then Misha Lerner, a student from Bethesda, asked: What did Rice think about the things President Obama’s administration was saying about the methods the Bush administration had used to get information from detainees?

Rice took the question in stride. saying that she was reluctant to criticize Obama, then getting to the heart of the matter.

“Let me just say that President Bush was very clear that he wanted to do everything he could to protect the country. After September 11, we wanted to protect the country,” she said. “But he was also very clear that we would do nothing, nothing, that was against the law or against our obligations internationally. So the president was only willing to authorize policies that were legal in order to protect the country.”

She added: “I hope you understand that it was a very difficult time. We were all so terrified of another attack on the country. September 11 was the worst day of my life in government, watching 3,000 Americans die. . . . Even under those most difficult circumstances, the president was not prepared to do something illegal, and I hope people understand that we were trying to protect the country.” Read more…

BlackBerry Curve 8520 Images Leak Online

blackberry curve 8520 BlackBerry Curve 8520

Images of the new BlackBerry Curve 8520 smartphone have just been leaked, the most impressive change is the sudden loss of the trackball which is to be replaced with a touch sensitive ‘optical trackball.’There is not a great deal of news on the ‘under the hood’ modifications. Still no 3G support which is a real disappointment for BlackBerry users but there is retained support for the slightly quicker EDGE should your network provider support it. Wifi connectivity is also staying, along with the same layout on the Home Screen. I hope they add a SMS text message signature feature, so i could add random quotes to my text. Any way’s will you guys be copping this one?

Andre 3000 Doesn’t Care About Hipsters

andre-cudi

via RapUp

Kid Cudi has taken to his blog to lament (in all caps, of course) that Lilly Allen and Andre 3000 turned down his request for a collaboration, among other things.

Says Cudi:

I ONLY HAVE 3 FEATURES FOR MY ALBUM WHICH IS MY BIG HOMIE SNOOP, KANYE AND COMMON. THE OTHER 2 ARTISTS I ASKED SO FAR TO BE ON MY ALBUM: LILY ALLEN AND ANDRE 3000, HAVE DECLINED MY REQUEST FOR A COLLAB. IT MADE ME REALIZE THO, DO I REALLY WANNA GO IN ON FEATURES? SURE I LIKE THESE ARTISTS BUT THIS FIRST ALBUM NEEDS TO BE ABOUT WUT I CAN DO.

Maybe 3 Stacks just can’t relate to hipster types who wear pink shirts and sing about aliens.

High-Def ‘Hunt For Gollum,’ New Lord Of The Fanvids

gollum_l

via NPR

On Sunday, a movie is due to get its premiere. It’s a 40-minute high-definition film, released over the Internet, made by fans who are earning no profit on it.

That’s by design — because the movie is a prequel to The Lord of the Rings.

Called The Hunt for Gollum, the film is the work of 150 volunteers, says director Chris Bouchard.

“We’re essentially a bunch of fans and enthusiast filmmakers,” says Bouchard, who has put two years into the project.

He made up the plot, which focuses on a search to find the deranged Gollum. The fear is that the wizened creature might reveal the whereabouts of the magic ring to the powers of darkness.

“I guess this story is just a small chapter when you compare it to a feature film,” Bouchard says. “We tried to expand it a bit and show the epic scale of Middle Earth in kind of a tribute to what Peter Jackson did.”

Of course, Academy Award-winning writer-director Peter Jackson might not consider this production a tribute. New Line Cinema, which produced the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the J.R.R. Tolkien family, which owns the rights to the books, might have a thing or two to say about it as well. Read more…

Ron Howard tussles with Vatican over film

via MSNBC

ROME – Director Ron Howard claimed Sunday that the Vatican interfered with efforts to get permits to shoot certain scenes of his “Angels & Demons” religious thriller in Rome — a charge the Vatican said was purely a publicity stunt.tomhanksangelsanddemonsmovie

The film, which stars Tom Hanks and is based on the best-selling novel by Dan Brown, has its world premiere Monday in Rome.

“Angels & Demons” combines an ancient secret brotherhood called the Illuminati, a papal conclave and a high-tech weapon threatening to destroy the Vatican.

At a press conference Sunday, Howard said he hadn’t sought cooperation from the Vatican based on the opposition he encountered filming “The Da Vinci Code,” another Brown novel that angered many Catholic leaders.

But he said the Vatican nevertheless exerted influence regarding his filming permits, and he was told it would not be possible even to shoot scenes in Rome that had churches in the background.

“When you come to film in Rome, the official statement to you is that the Vatican has no influence,” he said. “Everything progressed very smoothly, but unofficially a couple of days before we were to start filming in several of our locations, it was explained to us that through back channels and so forth that the Vatican had exerted some influence.”

“Was I surprised? No. Am I a little frustrated at times? Sure,” he said. Read more…

The Angola Three: Torture in Our Own Backyard

a3_poster

via AlterNet

“My soul cries from all that I witnessed and endured. It does more than cry, it mourns continuously,” said Black Panther Robert Hillary King, following his release from the infamous Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola in 2001, after serving his last 29 years in continuous solitary confinement. King argues that slavery persists in Angola and other U.S. prisons, citing the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which legalizes slavery in prisons as “a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.” King says: “You can be legally incarcerated but morally innocent.”

Robert King, Albert Woodfox, and Herman Wallace are known as the “Angola Three,” a trio of political prisoners whose supporters include Amnesty International, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Congressman John Conyers, and the ACLU. Kgalema Mothlante, the President of South Africa says their case “has the potential of laying bare, exposing the shortcomings, in the entire U.S. system.” Woodfox and Wallace are the two co-founders of the Angola chapter of the Black Panther Party (BPP) — the only official prison chapter of the BPP. Both convicted in the highly contested stabbing death of white prison guard Brent Miller, Woodfox and Wallace have now spent over 36 years in solitary confinement. Read more…

Michael Vick in Talks to Become PETA Spokesman

mike_vick

via AdAge

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Michael Vick is in talks to become the new spokesman for PETA.

Yes, you read that correctly. The disgraced one-time NFL superstar serving prison time for funding an illegal dog-fighting ring is primed to do public-service ads for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals upon his release later this month. According to three people with knowledge of the matter, the proposed endorsement is part of a comprehensive PR scheme aimed at rehabilitating the quarterback’s image and gaining him readmission to the league that banned him from playing.

“I’m familiar with [the plan],” said Dan Shannon, director of youth outreach and campaigns for PETA. “We have been in discussions with Michael Vick, with his management team, about the possibility of him putting out a public-service announcement with PETA when he’s out of jail. We want him to discourage people from taking part in dog-fighting. I can do it until I’m blue in the face and it might not convince anybody. Michael Vick sure can. He can say, ‘Look, I did it, I was wrong, and it ruined my career.’” Read more…

Obama revelling in U.S. power unseen in decades

via Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Barack Obama is revelling in presidential power and influence unseen in Washington for decades.obama-speech

Barely 100 days in office, the U.S. president and his Democratic Party have firm control over the White House and Congress and the ability to push through ambitious plans.

Now, with the coming retirement of a Supreme Court justice clearing the way for him to appoint a successor, Obama already is assured a legacy at the top of all three branches of government — executive, legislative and judicial.

On the corporate front, the federal government’s pumping of billions of dollars in bailout money into banks and auto companies has given Obama the power to force an overhaul in those industries, a remarkable intervention in capitalist industries by the state. Read more…

An invention that could change the internet for ever

google-logo-2via Independent UK

The biggest internet revolution for a generation will be unveiled this month with the launch of software that will understand questions and give specific, tailored answers in a way that the web has never managed before.

The new system, Wolfram Alpha, showcased at Harvard University in the US last week, takes the first step towards what many consider to be the internet’s Holy Grail – a global store of information that understands and responds to ordinary language in the same way a person does.

Although the system is still new, it has already produced massive interest and excitement among technology pundits and internet watchers.

Computer experts believe the new search engine will be an evolutionary leap in the development of the internet. Nova Spivack, an internet and computer expert, said that Wolfram Alpha could prove just as important as Google. “It is really impressive and significant,” he wrote. “In fact it may be as important for the web (and the world) as Google, but for a different purpose. Babylon Ruins Reopen in Iraq, to Controversy

via NY Times

BABYLON, Iraq — After decades of dictatorship and disrepair, Iraq is celebrating its renewed sovereignty over the Babylon archaeological site — the “liberation” of it and other archeological sites, as one official put it — by fighting over the place, over its past and future and, of course, over its spoils.

Time long ago eroded the sun-dried bricks that shaped ancient Babylon, the city of Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar, where Daniel read the writing on the wall and Alexander the Great died.

Colonial archaeologists packed off its treasures to Europe a century ago. Saddam Hussein rebuilt the site in his own megalomaniacal image. American and Polish troops turned it into a military camp, digging trenches and filling barricades with soil peppered with fragments of a biblical-era civilization. Read more…
