A little controversy a few days before the movie opens can’t hurt at all, matter of fact he should of probably said this a few weeks ago.Can’t wait till Wednesday. This movie will open big, but still probably won’t do Dark Knight numbers.

Michael Bay sent a scathing email to Paramount Studios before the release of “Transformers 2,” complaining in effect that his famous director friends would be shocked at the way Paramount was promoting the flick.

We’ve obtained an email dated May 4, 2009 — from Bay to Paramount head Brad Grey, along with a bunch of other Paramount honchos. Bay complains bitterly that Paramount’s ad campaign

for “Transformers 2″ was tepid and ineffective.

“… I have been waiting, and waiting for the anticipation of an ‘event movie’ to make it into the ‘public zeitgeist,’” Bay writes.

Bay calls the print campaign an “abject failure,” with a “pathetic presence” in the L.A. Times. He’s especially pissed about the profile of the movie on the MTV Video Awards, calling it “so lame.”

But here’s the best part. Bay name-drops Jerry Bruckheimer, saying Jerry always told him “a studio that does not make [the opening of a movie] an event … will get bitten in the ass.” He then adds, “Besides my good friend Steven [Spielberg], Jerry has made a lot more successful movies then (sic) all of us.”

Bay then asks, sarcastically, “Is this is a cash issue with your company?”

In fairness, on June 6, Bay clearly had a change of heart, sending an email to Grey and others at Paramount, praising them for treating him well, adding …”Paramount is like family. Thank you all for busting your butts and bringing your ‘A game’ for the release of Transformers.”

Bet Steven and Jerry haven’t sent such a nice email to their studios!

iPhone 3GS Sales Exceed 1 Million, iPhone 3.0 Downloads Reach 6 Million

Looks like Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster’s second estimate of Apple’s weekend iPhone sales underestimated demand just as badly as his first. Apple didn’t sell 500,000 units of its new iPhone 3GS over the weekend, as Munster first predicted. Nor did it sell 750,000 units as he said in a research note this morning. It sold over one million. Moreover, downloads of the company’s new iPhone 3.0 software, launched last Wednesday, have already reached six million.

“Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs said a press release today. “With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”

An impressive showing. Particularly considering all the factors that could slow sales: The souring economy, competition from the Palm (PALM) Pre, the BlackBerry Storm, the T-Mobile G1 and, of course, the iPhone itself. After all, there is now a $99 iPhone on the market. Beyond this, there’s the fact that the 3GS was launched in eight countries. The 3G debuted in 21.

Interestingly, this is the first time we’ve seen Jobs quoted in an Apple release in some time now. As best I can tell, the last quote attributed to him was in a Jan. 21, 2009, earnings release. Since then, Apple (AAPL) has issued 22 more press releases. This, the 22nd, is the first in which it is Jobs, and not COO Tim Cook or Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, who is quoted. Does this mean he’s officially back at work following his medical leave? I’ve put that question to Apple and will update if I hear back.

Obama crossing border into Gaza mingling with the people announcing the end of the U.S. military support for Israel until all settlements in the West Bank are dismantled.  Can you picture Obama settling into motion a process by which global nuclear disarment will be achieved?  Then rising up amid the increasingly mad scramble for whats left of the world’s natural resources and announcing that the American way of life is negotiable, and that he is ready to negotiate a fair and equitable arrangement for all?

SHOWS. WHAT IS THE TOLL ON YOUR LIVES?

Bill Paxton: I drive from my house to make the call on Monday morning and I’m lucky to see my house before 2 o’clock in the morning on Friday night. It’s a monastic kind of existence. I just stay in a hotel out there (in Santa Clarita, Calif.). I feel like a weird monk. The hardest thing is to go from such an intense work situation to just all of a sudden, that’s it.

Bryan Cranston: What you’ll find (on) all of these shows, we’re all working 12 to 13 to 14 hours a day. If you can do a 12-hour day, you can go home and be with your family.

Simon Baker: Twelve hours, you can have an existence.

Denis Leary: On “Rescue Me,” we do four-, six-, eight-, 10-hour days. When (showrunner) Peter (Tolan) is directing, we do six-hour days sometimes.

Laurence Fishburne: How is that possible?

Leary: Because these actors have been there from the beginning. They are all really good at their characters and they’re fantastic with each other.

Baker: You just did five (seasons). We’re a first-year show, so part of the struggle is constantly trying to find the tone within the writers’ room (and with directors). Director A may be a fantastic director but doesn’t necessarily get the tone. We like to try to do a little bit of mucking around.

North Korea accuses Obama of nuclear war plot

North Korea has accused US President Barack Obama of plotting a nuclear war on the communist nation by reaffirming a US assurance of security for South Korea, the North’s state media said.

In a first official response to last week’s US-South Korean summit, the state-run weekly Tongil Sinbo said in its Saturday edition Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak “are trying to ignite a nuclear war”.

“The US-touted provision of ‘extended deterrence, including a nuclear umbrella’ (for South Korea) is nothing but ‘a nuclear war plan,’” Tongil Sinbo said.

It said it wasn’t a coincidence that the United States has brought “nuclear equipment into South Korea and its surroundings and staged massive war drills every day to look for a chance to invade North Korea.”

Pyongyang has created weeks of tension by conducting a second nuclear test and test-firing missiles.

At a summit with Lee in Washington Wednesday, Obama warned that North Korea is a “grave threat” and vowed to defend South Korea.

Barack Obama: ‘We Need Fathers To Step Up’

As the father of two young girls who have shown such poise, humor, and patience in the unconventional life into which they have been thrust, I mark this Father’s Day—our first in the White House—with a deep sense of gratitude. One of the greatest benefits of being President is that I now live right above the office. I see my girls off to school nearly every morning and have dinner with them nearly every night. It is a welcome change after so many years out on the campaign trail and commuting between Chicago and Capitol Hill.

But I observe this Father’s Day not just as a father grateful to be present in my daughters’ lives but also as a son who grew up without a father in my own life. My father left my family when I was 2 years old, and I knew him mainly from the letters he wrote and the stories my family told. And while I was lucky to have two wonderful grandparents who poured everything they had into helping my mother raise my sister and me, I still felt the weight of his absence throughout my childhood.

As an adult, working as a community organizer and later as a legislator, I would often walk through the streets of Chicago’s South Side and see boys marked by that same absence—boys without supervision or direction or anyone to help them as they struggled to grow into men. I identified with their frustration and disengagement—with their sense of having been let down.

In many ways, I came to understand the importance of fatherhood through its absence—both in my life and in the lives of others. I came to understand that the hole a man leaves when he abandons his responsibility to his children is one that no government can fill. We can do everything possible to provide good jobs and good schools and safe streets for our kids, but it will never be enough to fully make up the difference.

That is why we need fathers to step up, to realize that their job does not end at conception; that what makes you a man is not the ability to have a child but the courage to raise one.

As fathers, we need to be involved in our children’s lives not just when it’s convenient or easy, and not just when they’re doing well—but when it’s difficult and thankless, and they’re struggling. That is when they need us most.

And it’s not enough to just be physically present. Too often, especially during tough economic times like these, we are emotionally absent: distracted, consumed by what’s happening in our own lives, worried about keeping our jobs and paying our bills, unsure if we’ll be able to give our kids the same opportunities we had.

Our children can tell. They know when we’re not fully there. And that disengagement sends a clear message—whether we mean it or not—about where among our priorities they fall.

So we need to step out of our own heads and tune in. We need to turn off the television and start talking with our kids, and listening to them, and understanding what’s going on in their lives.

Chicago couple with swine flu say ‘I do’

A Chicago couple married in surgical masks and latex gloves Sunday after learning less than 48 hours before that they both had swine flu. Ilana Jackson and Jeremy Fierstien went ahead with the ceremony after doctors assured them guests wouldn’t be at serious risk.But to be sure, the 26-year-olds kept a 10-foot distance from family and friends at all times, even walking around the gathering instead of down the aisle at a Highland Park synagogue.

Jackson says they’d joked about swine flu after both experienced vomiting, achy limbs and fever. But they never thought they really had it.

She says the circumstances were unfortunate but that they took it in stride.

Why Do Men Hate Condoms?

The federal government has spent nearly half a million dollars to fund a study to find out why some men would prefer not to wear condoms during sex.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, a branch of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded a $423,500 grant to researchers at The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction.

The Bloomington, Ind., based research team will use the funding to study “barriers to correct condom use,” according to a release from the institute.

“This project aims to advance our understanding of, among other factors, the role of cognitive and affective processes and condom application skills in explaining problems with condom use in young, heterosexual adult men,” reads an excerpt of the study, which will be funded through May 2011.

But critics aren’t so sure that this is the way the government should be spending taxpayer dollars.

This time they’re going on a lavish Mediterranean cruise. Winfrey and her staff will leave Chicago on Saturday. The cruise ship will stop in Spain, Italy, Turkey, Greece and Malta. She is covering transportation, food, drinks and activities at port stops. In 2005, Winfrey celebrated the end of her “Wildest Dreams” season by surprising her staff with an all-expenses-paid trip to Hawaii. According to Chicago-based Best Travel, a cruise like the one Winfrey is taking her staff on costs about $5,400 a person.

We were following the twitter stream of @tonyhawk today and came across this twitpic of Tony doing a manual down the halls of the white house. It appears that Tony was at the White House today for Cnn’s First Fathers event. Apparantly Ashtun Kutcher sent this tweet to Tony which basically called him out to skateboard in the white house.

With the permission of the White House officials, Tony Hawk skated the grand foyer and the nearby Old Executive Office Building. Hawk also sent out a few other tweets from today like “The Prez addressing all of us fathers before we split up to visit DC charities,” and “D Wade & Etan T make me feel short.”

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Is America ready to say, “How you doin’?” to New York-based radio-personality-cum-daytime-talk-show-host Wendy Williams? Debmar-Mercury, media buyers and veteran talk show producers are all betting that “The Wendy Williams Show” will strike a cord with audiences in between coasts when it makes its debut July 13 in national syndication on 20th Century Fox-owned and -operated stations.

The talk show, which will air live at 10 a.m. EST in major markets such as New York, comes with a built-in fan base after a six-week test airing in four cities last July. The show quickly found an audience in New York and Los Angeles, where it posted 333% and 29% ratings gains, respectively, among women 25 to 54 in its time slot after airing against repeats of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” It will also air on BET during same-day repeats at 11 p.m. EST.

Music publisher EverGreen, which owns the catalogs of 2 Live Crew, Third Eye Blind, MC Hammer, Tupac Shakur and others, has signed a deal with WIDEawake, the Canada-based development company that acquired the assets of Death Row Records earlier this year, to be the worldwide administrative company of the legendary rap label. As part of a long-term arrangement, EverGreen will administer and handle licensing for all of the compositions and master recordings in the Death Row catalog, as well as the processing of all mechanical and performance royalties in the catalog.

“After purchasing the Death Row catalog in January, WIDEawake began looking for a partner to help monetize their rights,” David Schulhof, co-CEO of EverGreen, tells Billboard.com. “We already had a relationship through the estate of Tupac Shakur; WIDEawake was looking for an exclusive boutique company to help focus on licensing in the film, television, video game and ad world; and because we own the catalogs of Tupac and 2 Live Crew and Teddy Riley and others, they knew we already had experience in the genre. So, it just felt like the obvious choice for them to partner up with us for Death Row.”

With the new joint venture, WIDEawake extends EverGreen’s rights to market, promote and collect royalties on all the copyrights and master recordings in the Death Row catalog, including more than 10,000 released and unreleased songs by such artists as Tupac, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Tha Dogg Pound, Kurupt, Daz Dillinger and Nate Dogg, to list a few. It also includes never-before released albums by Crooked I, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, RBX, The Lady of Rage, Warren G, K-Solo, Danny Boy and DJ Quick, among others.

One of my favorite specials: Put a little butter, a tilapia fillet, broccoli, and a slice of cheese in some aluminum foil. Wrap it and throw it on the grill.

The Setting
My house has a nice setup outside—if you’ve been to the Delano hotel or the Mandarin or the Raleigh in Miami, my yard’s reminiscent of that—a real bunga­low vibe. But every neighborhood also has a certain public park—CB Smith Park in my area—where there’s something about the flavor coming off the grills. They’ve got the burgers to put Burger King out of business.

Facebook Bombshell Book Due to Cause a Stir

I have read a few articles about this subject and it seems this is the classic American success story. Claw,scratch,lie and steal your way to the top.

Facebook’s creation myth has left the building, or so we hear: Fortune is said to be readying an excerpt of Ben Mezrich‘s tell-all book and movie about the social network. And another publication is, naturally, trying to ruin the scoop.

We hear the New York Times‘ Brad Stone has been calling around frantically, trying to get hold of a galley himself and spoil Fortune‘s exclusive. And he may well succeed; the writer outed the author of the anonymous Fake Steve Jobs blog last year with help from his sources in the publishing industry. Mezrich’s book is due out July 14.

The media scramble for galleys of Accidental Billionaires just goes to show Facebook remains something of an “it” company in Silicon Valley, even as it grows out of its startup phase and gropes for revenue.

It also proves that respected media outlets have no trouble taking seriously a project created by a busted, fabricating author and adapted for film by would-be crack smuggler, about a money-losing company.

Nor do we, obviously. We’d love to get our hands on said galleys, if only to fact-check them the way we did with Mezrich’s comical book proposal. If you can help, please get in touch.

Since his unforgettable role in 1994′s Pulp Fiction, Ving Rhames has been a powerful force in Hollywood. With numerous film appearances before and starring roles aplenty since, Rhames has been hard at work at producing some films of his own. The actor’s present work, The Wrath Of Cain, contains a message about street life in America, as well our commonalities, that are very tangible to the Hip Hop generation. Ving spoke to HipHopDX on Tuesday evening, to discuss the film, his views on youth culture, and two of its co-stars – who happen to be rappers, Gillie Da Kid [click to read] and Nipsey Hussle [click to read].

Produced by Evan Louis and Eugene “Big U” Henley, Wrath of Cain contains a premise resonant in Rhames‘ eyes. “The storyline is that I’m a guy in a prison – a former gangbanger [who is] doing life in prison, with two sons. One of my sons is a Crip, played by Nipsey Hussle. The other one is a Blood, who’s my son, but I don’t know he’s my son at the beginning of the movie, played by Gillie Da Kid.” The film takes the unbenownst brothers who war in the streets, to a war on the inside, amongst their father. “They don’t know they’re brothers; I don’t know that [Gillie's character "JD" is] my son.” Rhames says this conflict leads to a powerful ending. “It’s gonna be very suprising,” Gillie said.

The film focuses on the similarities in people, regardless of skin or bandana color. “I’m trying to show, we’re all the same – Crips, Bloods, Mexican gangs. You grew up in this hood, I grew up in that hood; a real nigga is a real nigga regardless.” He later added, “They’re of the same blood. The only difference between [someone] being a Crip or a Blood is [their] address.“

The film starts June 29th in Los Angeles. With Big U as a producer on the film, Ving Rhames has worked with U‘s South Central neighborhood to enrich, what he calls “the hood’s talent.” “I have Rolling 60s guys who are going to be apprentices with the camera, who are learning about sound, lighting, directing, wardrobe, what-have-you. They’re gonna be a part of this film in an apprentice program.” Rhames says after working in the Rolling 60s Crip neighborhood, he aspires to work with a Blood neighborhood next.
