LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― A dog made famous for its heroics in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks has succesfully been cloned by BioArts, a California-based company.

Trakr, a German Sheppard rescue dog from Nova Scotia, helped rescue victims at Ground Zero eight years ago. The dog actually pulled the last remaining survivor from the rubble itself, and his owner, James Symington, believes that was merely one example of Trakr’s abilities.

“His heroic work at Ground Zero was just a culmination of his amazing career,” Symington said.

But in 2008, as Trakr aged, he became ravaged by multiple diseases. Symington then saw an advertisement for a contest sponspored by BioArts and decided to submit Trakr’s story to the company. The contest’s prize: cloning one lucky dog free of charge to its owner.

CEO Louis Hawthorne believes Trakr’s past accomplishments made him the winner.

“We expected that the winner would be an exceptional pet,” Hawthorne said. “Maybe he would have rescued Timmy from a well. But we didn’t think it would be anything of the historical significance that Trakr played. That blew us away.”

BioArts originally intended to make one clone of the German Sheppard, but then decided to re-think the process.

“At some point in the process we woke up and said, ‘hey, wait a second. Why stop at one? Let’s make a whole set,’” Hawthorne said.

The global financial crisis has reduced the differences between nations and created the opportunity to form a new world order, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Wednesday.

Speaking after a meeting with Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev in the Kazakh capital Astana, Lula called on the global community to seize on the crisis to create a fairer world for developing nations.

“I want to say that before the crisis, there were many countries which had greater significance than others, and some countries which had no significance at all,” he said through a translator.

“After the crisis, everyone has become similar. We have the possibility to create a new world order and together we should improve our relations.”

Lula arrived in Kazakhstan Wednesday following the first-ever summit between fellow developing economic powerhouses Russia, India and China — together with Brazil dubbed the BRIC nations — in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg.

Nazarbayev, head of Central Asia’s largest economy, is keen to secure a larger role for his government in world affairs.

Following up on Lula’s call, the pair said in a statement following their meeting that the United Nations should open up the UN Security Council to developing nations in an effort to bolster global security.

They said that opening the organisation, which only has five permanent members, to wider membership was the only way to make the often-criticised body “more legitimate and effective.”

June 17 (Bloomberg) — It’s a plot better suited for a John Le Carre novel.

Two Japanese men are detained in Italy after allegedly attempting to take $134 billion worth of U.S. bonds over the border into Switzerland. Details are maddeningly sketchy, so naturally the global rumor mill is kicking into high gear.

Are these would-be smugglers agents of Kim Jong Il stashing North Korea’s cash in a Swiss vault? Bagmen for Nigerian Internet scammers? Was the money meant for terrorists looking to buy nuclear warheads? Is Japan dumping its dollars secretly? Are the bonds real or counterfeit?

The implications of the securities being legitimate would be bigger than investors may realize. At a minimum, it would suggest that the U.S. risks losing control over its monetary supply on a massive scale.

The trillions of dollars of debt the U.S. will issue in the next couple of years needs buyers. Attracting them will require making sure that existing ones aren’t losing faith in the U.S.’s ability to control the dollar.

The dollar is, for better or worse, the core of our world economy and it’s best to keep it stable. News that’s more fitting for international spy novels than the financial pages won’t help that effort. It is incumbent upon the U.S. Treasury to get to the bottom of this tale and keep markets informed.

The Game to Star in “HOUSE ARREST” w/Stacy Dash

Mexico finds stash of cocaine filled sharks

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexico’s navy has seized more than a ton of cocaine stuffed inside frozen sharks, as drug gangs under military pressure go to greater lengths to conceal narcotics bound for the United States.

Armed and masked navy officers cut open more than 20 shark carcasses filled with slabs of cocaine after checking a container ship in a container port in the southern Mexico state of Yucatan, the navy and Mexican media said on Tuesday.

“We are talking about more than a ton of cocaine that was inside the ship,” Navy Commander Eduardo Villa told reporters after X-ray machines and sniffer dogs helped uncover the drugs. “Those in charge of the shipment said it was a conserving agent but after checks we confirmed it was cocaine,” he said.

Mark Geragos appeals to Supreme Court to delay Chris Brown hearing

This guy Gergagos has been fishing for something within the LAPD about this case, and postponing a hearing where Rihanna is scheduled to tesify.  It’s probably a last ditch effort to salvage what is left of Brown’s career. Anyway MTV has the scoop on the story:

After losing a bid last week to push back the start of client Chris Brown’s assault case, attorney Mark Geragos has asked the California Supreme Court to delay the trial against the singer until it can rule on his attempt to get access to records from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Reuters reports that Geragos’ appeal to the state Supreme Court requests a delay of the preliminary hearing in the case, which is currently slated for Monday (June 22). Geragos has been trying to get access to the LAPD’s investigation into the leak of a photo of Rihanna after the alleged incident.

The judge in the case denied the request for more time last month, saying it was too early to deal with those issues, and a state appeals court also denied the same request from Geragos last week.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the state Supreme Court has not yet taken action on the appeal, which was filed on Friday, and a court spokesperson said the justices could decide to hear the case, decline it or let Monday’s preliminary hearing proceed without commenting. The paper also reported that, expecting a crush of reporters covering the high-profile trial featuring two big contemporary music stars, the L.A. County Superior Court has not yet decided whether the proceedings will be televised.

A teenage girl is suing a tattoo artist for £10,000 after she allegedly asked him for three stars on her face – but ended up with 56.

Eighteen-year-old Kimberley Vlaminck paid £55 for ‘the graffiti that has ruined my life’ in her Belgian home town of Courtrai.

She claimed the Romanian tattooist who performed the artwork misunderstood her French and English.

She claims she fell asleep while he was doing his work… and awoke to ‘this nightmare’.

But today, Rouslan Toumaniantz – himself covered from head to foot in tattoos and piercings – said he would help pay for treatment to remove the tattoos.

‘I maintain that she absolutely agreed that I tattoo those 56 stars on the left side of her face,’ he told newspaper La Derniere Heure.

‘A witness, a woman who was present, has already been questioned by police, and she confirms it.

Kelis Accuses Nas of Abandoning Her During Pregnancy

Not a good look for GOD SON but there are multiple sides to every story. Hopefully this situation can take an 180 on the strength of the unborn baby.

Just weeks after news of their divorce broke, Kelis has accused her estranged husband Nas of abandoning her during her pregnancy. Kelis is carrying the couple’s first child together and is reportedly due to give birth next month.

MTV News has obtained court papers filed by Kelis against Nas that detail her accusations.

In the motion, filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Kelis is seeking child support, spousal support, and attorney fees and costs from Nas.

Overall, the singer’s requests total a number of one-time payments upwards of $30,000 for birthing costs, a nurse, baby items for multiple homes, and more.

According to the documents, Kelis is due to give birth to the couple’s first child on July 21. (Nas has a daughter, Destiny Jones, 15, from a previous relationship.)

Kelis is also seeing spousal support retroactive to April 30 when the couple split, according to the filing. Requests for child support, beginning when Kelis gives birth, and for Nas to maintain her medical insurance were also made.

In the papers, Kelis, a recording artist with a number of hits including “Milkshake” and “Caught Out There,” maintains that she is dependent on Nas’ financial will. The singer said she took a hiatus from her musical career in 2008 to attend culinary school. The monies she received in that year were royalty payments, but have since been spent on monthly bills.

The company designed Kanye’s custom Rolex which is literally blacked-out.

A prominent South Carolina Republican killed his Facebook page Sunday after being caught likening the First Lady to an escaped gorilla.
Commenting on a report posted to Facebook about a gorilla escape at a zoo in Columbia, S.C., Friday, longtime GOP activist Rusty DePass wrote, “I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors – probably harmless.”

Busted by South Carolina political blogger Will Folks, DePass told WIS-TV in Columbia, “I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone. The comment was clearly in jest.”

Then he added, “The comment was hers, not mine,” claiming Michelle Obama made a recent remark about humans descending from apes. The Daily News could find no such comment.

“‘Humor’ like this is nothing new for South Carolina Republicans – even as the party claims to be focusing on ‘outreach’ efforts to minorities,” said Folks, a former gubernatorial spokesman and widely read blogger. “The fact that Palmetto [State] Republicans don’t get that this is a serious problem for them baffles us.”

50 Cent is set to film the video for his latest single “OK, Alright” in Brooklyn on Thursday (June 18) and fans looking for some camera shine will be able to get in on the action.

Applicants over the age of 21 can submit photos of themselves to Hot97.com or Thisis50.com and 150 lucky ones will get picked to appear in the video.
