Lil Wayne’s Attempt To Block Documentary Fails

California Superior Court Judge Michael Mink denied Lil Wayne‘s request to prevent the release of “private and sensitive” material in an upcoming documentary about the rapper.

The documentary, entitled The Carter, was the subject of deliberations on Friday (June 12). The film will be released by Digerati.

Attorneys had previously called the documentary a “scandalous portrayal” of their client, and named QD3 Entertainment, Quincy Jones III and Digerati as defendants.

“Lil Wayne’s reputation and the value of his identity can be diminished by an unauthorized use of his image and persona, or by association with a movie or purported ‘authorized’ documentary that, in reality, does not meet with his approval and depicts him in a negative light and/or engaged in criminal conduct,” alleged the lawsuit.

In addition, Mink awarded sanctions against Wayne and his attorneys in the amount of $5,000, which must be paid within a 30-day period.

Finally, Wayne must appear for deposition at Digerati‘s attorney’s offices by July 31, during which time he will explain what exactly he finds harmful in the documentary pertaining to his current criminal cases.

Harvard medical school staff have engaged in (Elegans) immortality research based on a simple observation: certain cell lines are immortal.  You’ll be gone by the end of the century, and your current skin’ll be gone before the end of the month, but in your very existence the immortality of the first primate lives on.  While “somatic” cells (the cells that make everything except babies) wither and die, the “germ” cells (sperm and ova for us) make new organisms, which then replicate and make new germ cells, and are effectively immortal.

50 Cent Joins HBO’s ‘Entourage’

HBO’s Entourage will be a little bit crowded when the new season kicks off in July. Rapper 50 Cent will reportedly join the cast of the series that revolves around Vincent Chase, a young A-list movie star, and his childhood friends from Bayside, Queens, New York City, as they navigate the unfamiliar terrain of Hollywood, California. According to The Insider, the infamous singer has been spotted filming scenes for the show on Friday, joining cast members Jerry Ferrara, Adrian Grenier and series creator Doug Ellin on the set.

This is not the first time a rapper has graced the show. Entourage has easily carved a niche in the rap community by booking rappers like Kanye West, T.I. and Snoop Dogg. Moreover, both Saigon and Bow Wow have also recurrently appeared on the show.

“50 looked like he was enjoying his time as he drove on the streets of Los Angeles in a white convertible Rolls Royce,” The Insider reported, adding that the rapper’s episode is set to air in August.

As of this moment, however, 50 Cent’s participation on Entourage is not yet known.

This is the latest casting news for Entourage‘s sixth season. Gary Cole has been confirmed to be joining the cast as a regular for the new season while Lil’ Wayne is expected to appear in an episode as himself. Also guest starring are Tom Brady, Autumn Reeser, and Swarnendra Verma.

Darren James saw the news flash on his TV screen last week: A porn actress had tested positive for HIV. James, 45, felt a moment of shock, then sadness.

“I feel really bad for this girl,” he said. “One thing I can say, I just wish her well. It’s the worst thing to get that call.”

By April 2004, he was at the pinnacle of his career, traveling to foreign countries to shoot films, sometimes working six days a week and two or three scenes a day.

“You’re like Superman. Especially with the amount of work that I had? It was nonstop,” James said. “I’m thinking, I’m invincible. . . . That’s just the way our mentality was. It was, you get the test, you’re clean, not realizing that in between the tests, and after the tests, you know, other people, you don’t know what they’re doing.”

The call that changed his life came as James was getting ready to book tickets to Japan for another international shoot. AIM clinic officials told him he was HIV positive. And, he said, they told him they planned to release his name publicly.

He asked them not to — in part out of concern for his parents who did not know how he made his living — but they did anyway.

“It was like a hit in the gut,” James said. “My whole world stops. . . .Life was pretty much over.”

The latest racy billboard hoping to shock people is in SoHo, and it features three partially clothed models in a sexually suggestive situation.

A billboard is supposed to catch your eye, and in this instance, consider that mission accomplished.

“It’s just completely out there,” one mother said. “I don’t want the kids to see it.”

“I think it’s telling people it’s okay to do that, and it’s kind of gross,” Aleasha Stephens, a tourist from Houston, says.

MySpace founders have been pushed aside and there is speculation layoffs are coming.

As Facebook and Twitter watch what’s happening at MySpace, they should be worried and heed the warning of potential problems to come. Social-networking sites grow like weeds and, well, die like weeds too.

Twitter is the fastest growing networking site right now. Facebook is number two. MySpace, on the other hand, is seeing its audience decline and may have to fire employees.
When the growth of a social-networking site slows, you don’t need as many workers anymore. If a large corporation buys a smaller company, there’s the danger that the creative input of its founders will no longer be needed. That’s what’s happening at MySpace and it’s bound to happen at Facebook and Twitter down the road.

My Space is preparing to lay off 25 percent or more of its staff, after laying off five percent last year, TechCrunch reported this week. “Like any company with new leadership, Fox Interactive Media is reviewing every aspect of our operations, performance and structure,” Fox Interactive Media spokesman told DailyFinance in an e-mail.

Six Flags Seeks Bankruptcy to Cut Debt $1.8 Billion

June 13 (Bloomberg) — Six Flags Inc., the owner of 20 theme parks, sought bankruptcy protection 3 1/2 years after Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder become chairman and hired new managers in an attempt to return it to profitability.
The Chapter 11 petition filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Delaware, listed assets of $3 billion and debt of $2.4 billion as of Dec. 31. Thirty-six affiliates also sought protection.

Snyder began a shakeup of Six Flags in late 2005 after winning three seats on the board. The 48-year-old company hasn’t posted an annual profit since 1998 and had losses of $558.8 million in the two years after Snyder became chairman.

Six Flags shares have fallen 86 percent in the past 12 months.

The company said in today’s statement it’s seeking court approval of a prearranged reorganization plan that will cut its debt by about $1.8 billion and eliminate more than $300 million worth of preferred stock obligations. The reorganization plan has yet to be filed with the court.

Why VeVo Could Become The Hulu Of Music

Universal Music has apparently seduced a cortortium of indie labels, A2IM, to join its video site Vevo. That follows last week’s news that Sony (NYSE: SNE) Music Entertainment has also signed up for VeVo, which Universal is launching with help from YouTube, the Google (NSDQ: GOOG) video site.

Assuming it doesn’t run into some unforeseen obstacle, VeVo could easily become a mainstream digital platform for the struggling music industry, much like Hulu has become for the TV industry.

My reasoning, after the jump.

-The labels will probably work together better this time, providing consumers with a robust, complete content offering. The labels likely learned their lesson from the failure of digital music download services launched in the early 2000s, including pressplay (Sony and Universal) and a venture powered by MusicNet (EMI and BMG). Consumers rejected those services for their complicated licensing procedures and lack of choice in the acts offered for sale.  This time around, it looks like the labels are ready to be more collaborative—a release announcing Sony’s participation said it would include a broad array of its artists on the site.

A memoir by George Obama, the president’s half brother and a resident of Huruma, Kenya, will be published by Simon & Schuster in January 2010. George Obama, 27, shares the same father with his famous, older half sibling, although George and Barack Obama — 20 years apart in age — did not grow up together and did not meet as children.

George is the youngest of the senior Obama’s seven children and was born six months before his father died.

Little is known about George Obama. The book, tentatively titled “Homeland” and to be written with author-journalist Damien Lewis, will tell of George Obama’s fall into crime and poverty as a teenager and his eventual embrace of community organizing — a passion shared by the president — and of advocacy for the poor, an identification so strong that he chooses to live among them.

“Even had George Obama not been our President’s half brother, his story is moving and inspirational,” David Rosenthal, Simon & Schuster publisher and executive vice president, said in a statement Sunday. “It is an object lesson in survival, selflessness and courage.”

CIA Head Says Cheney Almost Wishing US Be Attacked

WASHINGTON — CIA Director Leon Panetta says former Vice President Dick Cheney’s criticism of the Obama administration’s approach to terrorism almost suggests “he’s wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point.” Panetta told The New Yorker for an article in its June 22 issue that Cheney “smells some blood in the water” on the issue of national security.

Cheney has said in several interviews that he thinks Obama is making the U.S. less safe. He has been critical of Obama for ordering the closure of the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, halting enhanced interrogations of suspected terrorists and reversing other Bush administration initiatives he says helped to prevent attacks on the U.S.

Last month the former vice president offered a withering critique of Obama’s policies and a defense of the Bush administration on the same day that Obama made a major speech about national security. Panetta said of Cheney’s remarks: “It’s almost, a little bit, gallows politics. When you read behind it, it’s almost as if he’s wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point. I think that’s dangerous politics.”

‘Whole in the Wall’ Puts Street Art Side by Side with Louis XIV

Now twin sisters, gallery owners in France, have organized an exhibition to celebrate the international stamp and cultural heft of what they prefer to call le street art, a genre that may have more establishment appeal abroad than it does in the United States.

The show, “Whole in the Wall,” is billed as the largest exhibition of American and European street art from 1970 to today, and includes paintings, sculpture and photography.

“It’s youth, it’s movement, it’s lively,” said Chantal Helenbeck, who with her twin, Brigitte, runs the Helenbeck Gallery in Paris, which held a similar show in November.

Trailing parfum on a high-heeled tour of the installation before it opened on Thursday in a multistory studio space on Manhattan’s far West Side, the sisters explained what drew them to street artists. “They’ve changed my vision of my work,” Chantal Helenbeck said, speaking in French, “because they haven’t gone to school. They are taught by life, and you can see that in their work.”

Brigitte added, “They bring a joie de vivre to the gallery.” With works by pioneering Bronx graffiti writers like Crash and Blade and their descendants, including Blek le Rat, a Parisian known for his stencil work, and the anonymous British artist Banksy, the show offers a diaspora that many Americans may not know existed. It’s evolved far beyond early tagging (abstractly writing a name or word in spray paint or marker, usually illegally) to more painterly and figurative forms.

“When I was shooting graffiti in the late ’70s, I thought I was shooting a very local, underground phenomenon,” said Martha Cooper, whose photographs documenting the scene are included in the exhibition. “My idea was, this could only happen in New York. And I was so wrong.”

BMW M1 Hommage Concept Revealed

It has been an interesting weekend. In honor of the M1’s 30th birthday, BMW decided to reveal the M1 Hommage, a concept that pays tribute to the original M1. The new design was shown at a private party over the weekend at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este.

The M1 Hommage was placed next to an original M1 and the 1972 Turbo Concept. Nearly thirty years ago, BMW has entered the supercar market with the M1, which shortly became an icon in terms of performance. BMW are no strangers to retro design, the Mini global success is the perfect example. The M1 Hommage combines the retro style with modern elements, and it stands out by its aggressive and wide body style.

Looked from a side, the M1 clearly mimics the older design, which is easily recognized by the louvered rear window, the BMW badge placement and the metallic bronze paint, just like the first M1 prototype in 1972.

The purpose of the new M1 project is uncertain and the M1 Hommage is strictly a design exercise meant to celebrate the past of its supercar. The car displayed at the Villa d’Este Concours was  a non-functional prototype, with no engine and interior, but with working lights and steering. Of course, the speculations will start flowing now and many people will probably look forward to a future design similar to the M1 Hommage, but there are no clues on whether BMW will ever manufacture an M1.

We have heard many rumors in the past that a 1 series M version might be built in the future, but each time we have spoken with BMW executives, the rumor has not been confirmed. In my opinion, I would rather see the retro style M1 being brought back  rather than an M1 based on the 135i.

Margaret, this old gal has clearly lived too long. Never in my life did I think I would see a bunch of old, white men claiming they are being discriminated against. I am sure the Hispanic women who cleaned their houses today are having a good laugh… or a good cry.

Honestly, the absurdity of it all is more than I can take. Stick me in a hole and throw some dirt on top of me. I’m done. If you are born a white, male Christian in today’s world and life didn’t turn out the way you wanted, you probably have only yourself and the Rush Limbaugh Show to blame. Some exceptions probably do exist, but if you’re a commentator on a cable news channel you’re probably the rule and not the exception.

Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose moved quickly to try to tamp down a growing controversy over a photo circulating online of him flashing gang signs.

In a statement released Thursday, shortly after the Chicago Tribune and other news outlets reported on the photo, Rose called the picture a bad joke made during his one year at the University of Memphis and strongly denied that he has ever been involved in gang activity.

The full statement:

Recently, a photo has been circulating on the Internet which appears to depict me flashing a gang sign.This photo of me was taken at a party I attended in Memphis while I was in school there, and was meant as a joke…a bad one, I now admit. I want to emphatically state, now and forever, that Derrick Rose is anti-gang, anti-drug, and anti-violence.

I am not, nor have I ever been, affiliated with any gang and I can’t speak loudly enough against gang violence, and the things that gangs represent.

In posing for this picture, I am guilty of being young, naive and of using extremely poor judgment.

I sincerely apologize to all my fans for my mistake. I pride myself on being a good citizen, and role model, that young people can look up to and I want to urge all my young fans to stay away from gangs and gang-related activities.

In the picture, Rose was throwing signs for the Gangster Disciples Nation, a prominent Chicago gang with tens of thousands of members, according to the Tribune. The gang is a dominant presence in the Englewood neighborhood where Rose grew up.
