Falcons release suspended QB Michael Vick

The Michael Vick era in Atlanta is officially over. Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said the team relinquished its contractual rights to Vick on Friday. “Michael remains suspended by the NFL,” Dimitroff said. “However, in the event NFL commissioner Roger Goodell decides to reinstate Michael, we feel his best opportunity to re-engage his football career would be at another club.”

The move was no surprise. Owner Arthur Blank has said Vick would not return to the Falcons.

Goodell has not committed to reinstating Vick after the quarterback completes his 23-month sentence on July 20 for running a dogfighting ring. Vick has been on home confinement in Virginia since leaving federal prison in Kansas on May 20.

Even while making it clear Vick had no football future with the Falcons, Blank has said he would be available to assist Vick.

If radical Muslims had carried out terrorist attacks in Kansas and Washington DC over the past five days, we might be trying to pass legislation giving the president the legal authority to place people in preventive detention, and Daniel Pipes would be implying that we need to round up Arab-Americans (correction: Muslims) and put them in relocation camps.

But it was only a couple of old white guys, so our civil liberties remain unthreatened.

Indeed, it’s not just the Kansas and DC shootings. Richard Poplawski, a right-wing extremist and white guy, allegedly gunned down three police officers in Pittsburgh in April, in part because he feared the non-existent “Obama gun ban.” Jim David Adkisson, a right-wing extremist and white guy, allegedly opened fire in a Unitarian church in Tennessee last year, in part because of his “hatred of the liberal movement.”

Imagine if James Von Brunn, Scott Roeder, Poplawski, and Adkisson were all Muslims.

A one-and-a-half-year-old boy high on marijuana was brought to a children’s intensive care unit for treatment on Thursday, after his parents noticed that he was overly sleepy, apathetic and walking unsteadily. “The baby arrived at the hospital with his mother after repeated unsuccessful attempts on her part to wake him,” said Dr. Yuri Viener, head of the children’s intensive care unit at Ziv Medical Center in Safed.

The baby, who lives with his family in a northern Galilee community, underwent multiple tests after doctors suspected he ingested a toxic substance, and a urine test revealed evidence of marijuana in the boy’s system. The boy, who received respiratory treatment, along with Oxygen and fluids, woke up after five hours and is in stable condition. Dr. Viener said it is rare that a baby would be exposed to large amounts of narcotic substances, but that even minimal exposure can cause respiratory problems, including cessation of breathing. He stressed that parents must be extremely cautious with children of all ages when it comes to dangerous substances at home.

Twitter launched the first phase of its Verified Accounts program moments ago, meaning that celebrities, musicians, athletes, actors, public officials and public agencies on the service can now display a “verified account” button on their Twitter pages.

For instance, visiting Twitter.com/mashable, you’ll see that I am indeed the real Pete Cashmore. Likewise, Twitter () celebrities like Ashton Kutcher and Oprah now carry the button. Those wishing to apply for verified status can visit the verified accounts help page, which explains:

With this feature, you can easily see which accounts we know are ‘real’ and authentic. That means we’ve been in contact with the person or entity the account is representing and verified that it is approved. (This does not mean we have verified who, exactly, is writing the tweets.)

This also does not mean that accounts without the ‘Verified Account’ badge are fake. The vast majority of accounts on the system are not impersonators, and we don’t have the ability to check 100% of them. For now, we’ve only verified a handful of accounts to help with cases of mistaken identity or impersonation.

The feature has been a long time coming, and many celebrities will jump on the opportunity to prove their legitimacy. It’ll also solve the entrenched problem of celebrity impersonations, which are confusing for users and unwelcome by those being impersonated. Businesses, however, will have to wait: the feature has not been rolled out to corporate entities yet.

WTF? Hermes breeds own crocs to meet bag demand

PARIS (Reuters) – French luxury goods group Hermes has resorted to breeding its own crocodiles on farms in Australia to try to meet demand for its leather bags, its chief executive said on Monday.

Customers sometimes have to wait several years for certain exotic-skin bags, which can fetch over 35,000 euros ($48,410).

“It can take three to four crocodiles to make one of our bags so we are now breeding our own crocodiles on our own farms, mainly in Australia,” Patrick Thomas told the Reuters Global Luxury Summit in Paris.

Hermes already faces a major challenge producing 3,000 crocodile bags a year, Thomas said, adding: “The world is not full of crocodiles, except the stock exchange!”

At least 16 previously unpublicized HIV cases in porn film performers, public health officials say [UPDATED]

A deathblow to the industry?

Los Angeles County officials released public health data this afternoon indicating that 16 previously unpublicized cases of HIV had been confirmed in adult film industry performers since 2004 when an outbreak shut down porn production for a month.

The 2004 cases — involving a male porn star, three actresses he had worked with and an unrelated case in a transsexual performer — drew intense scrutiny to safety practices in the industry.

The newly released data brings the number of known HIV cases in adult film performers to 22 since 2004, including a porn actress who tested positive late last week. At least 10 of those cases involved men who had sex with other men, according to health officials.

In all, 16 men and 5 women who worked as adult film industry performers contracted HIV between 2004 and 2008, according to Los Angeles County Department of Public Health data requested by The Times.

Between 1998 and 2003, 14 confirmed HIV cases were reported among adult film performers, according to the health department.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – The Black Eyed Peas led Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart for a 10th week on Thursday, while Kings of Leon and Kenny Chesney soared up the rankings.

The Peas reigned with “Boom Boom Pow,” the first single from their album “The E.N.D.,” which was released in the United States on Tuesday. “Boom Boom Pow” also ended the 15-week reign on the European Hot 100 Singles chart of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.”

Back in the U.S., Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” jumped 33 places to No. 19 after the band’s performance of the song on the MTV Movie Awards sent downloads of the track up to 72,000 copies for the week.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Mickey Rourke’s bruising opponents in “The Wrestler” don’t look so tough compared to his new foe: Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man.

Distributor Paramount has released the first photo of Rourke as villain Whiplash in the upcoming sequel, “Iron Man 2.”

Rourke is dressed for battle in the image, his torso and arms wrapped in metal braces sporting weapons and a chest device resembling the portable power plant that runs Downey’s Iron Man suit.

While Downey is completely encased in his metal suit, Rourke’s Whiplash outfit shows off a lot of flesh, along with plenty of tattoos coating the character’s skin.

Directed by Jon Favreau, “Iron Man 2″ kicks off Hollywood’s 2010 summer season next May 7.

CHICAGO – Hip-hop artist Kanye West returned to his hometown Thursday amid thunderous applause and 3,000 teenagers chanting his name during a private concert for Chicago public school students who improved their grades and attendance.

The event was put on by The Kanye West Foundation, a nonprofit working to decrease dropout rates and improve literacy. The organization was co-founded by his mother, Donda West, who died in November 2007. She had worked in higher education for 31 years.

Before the concert began, Kanye West said he sees his mother’s “dream coming true.” The Grammy Award-winning artist acknowledged that they didn’t always agree, noting she wasn’t fond of his first album’s title, 2004′s “College Dropout.” His three later albums reached platinum status.

The concert was the foundation’s first event since his mother died.

Shortly before taking the stage at the Chicago Theatre, he had a message for students: “Take every opportunity you have to make your life as successful as possible.”

Americans’ net worth shrinks $1.33 trillion in 1Q

American households lost $1.33 trillion of their wealth in the first three months of the year as the recession took a bite out of stock portfolios and dragged down home prices.

The Federal Reserve reported Thursday that household net worth fell to $50.38 trillion in the January-March quarter, the lowest level since the third quarter of 2004. The first-quarter figure marked a decline of 2.6 percent, or $1.33 trillion, from the final quarter of 2008.

Net worth represents total assets such as homes and checking accounts, minus liabilities like mortgages and credit card debt.

The damage to wealth in the first quarter came from the sinking stock market. The value of Americans’ stock holdings dropped 5.8 percent from the final quarter of last year.

The slide on Wall Street that began in late 2007 and gained speed last fall erased more than half the value of the U.S. stock market.

The value of stocks in the Dow Jones U.S. Total Stock Market Index, which measures nearly all U.S.-based companies, tumbled to $8 trillion when stocks hit a 12-year low on March 9. That was down from $19.2 trillion in October 2007.

The central bank’s numbers don’t reflect all the gains since stocks began rallying. On paper, the market is up $3.1 trillion from early March, though still down $8.1 trillion from the peak.

When Mos Def visited Angie Martinez’s New York radio show Tuesday to promote his new album, The Ecstatic, neither had any idea that would be promoting the most spectacular MC battle ever.

In March, a video hit YouTube that featured Mos challenging Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and others to a battle. Martinez asked him about the video. Mos admitted it was a candid moment in front of friends.

“I don’t have to address it, but what I said, I will stand by,” Mos said, adding that his comments were in regards to an article he saw (ours?) naming Jay-Z the greatest MC alive. “Friend or foe, I love you all, but I’m saying if you saying that you’re better than Slick Rick, who is still very alive and well, you saying that you’re better than Rakim, you saying you’re better than Black Thought — and the people making that claim have never been in a position to have to defend that in an open forum.”

J.J. Abrams to Assume Director Duties for Mission Impossible IV

J.J. Abrams wrote and directed Mission Impossible III, which was supposed to be a big deal at the time, but it only grossed a disappointing $134 mil domestically on a $150 mil budget (though it eventually made almost $400 mil worldwide).  I always assumed that was because by the third film (after a second one directed by John Woo featuring a motorcycle joust fight – God that movie sucked), no one cared about the Mission Impossible franchise anymore.  Nonetheless, word on the street is that Abrams is back as producer for a fourth movie. “I am incredibly honored that Tom (Cruise) has invited me back as a producer on Mission Impossible 4. says Abrams.  “Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing.”

There wasn’t much to celebrate after police arrived early Thursday morning at a Studio City club.

Authorities raided a birthday party at the Platinum Club on Ventura Boulevard. The rental club is just east of Tujunga Avenue.

Investigators said members of the South Los Angeles Rolling 60s gang were at the party. The gang is one of Los Angeles’ largest and most dangerous, police said.

“They’re one of the larger gangs in South Los Angeles,” said LAPD Sgt. Dan Horan. “They’re well established. There was a gang injunction against them in the neighborhood that they claim. That area around there is Slauson and Crenshaw in South Los Angeles. They are large in number and notorious in their activity.”

The Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Division and North Hollywood officers arrested more than 20 people. Many of the people arrested were on parole, according to authorities.
