Fleeing car hits Philly crowd, killing 3 children

A car fleeing a robbery scene and being chased by police Wednesday night jumped a curb and crashed into a crowd, killing three young children in front of their home and gravely injuring a woman, authorities said.

“It’s a tragedy,” police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said.

The incident in Feltonville, a neighborhood of row houses in North Philadelphia, began with two men stealing a motorcycle at gunpoint, Ramsey said. One man fled on the motorcycle, and the other sped away in a car, he said.

Police spotted the car a few minutes after receiving a report of the motorcycle theft and pursued it for about a mile.

The car jumped the curb with such force it badly damaged the concrete steps of one of the row houses, where the children lived. It became wedged between a house and a pole. The woman it hit is the mother of at least one of the dead children, all of whom were under age 10, authorities said.

Tel Aviv search for mattress containing $1M life savings

JERUSALEM (CNN) — It was supposed to be a pleasant surprise, but turned into the shock of a lifetime.

A woman in Tel Aviv, Israel, gave her elderly mother a new mattress as a surprise gift, throwing out the old tattered bed her mother had slept on for decades. The gesture ended up bankrupting Annat’s mother, who had stuffed her savings of nearly $1 million inside her old bed for decades, Annat told Israel Army Radio.

A massive search is under way at the city dump, where security has been beefed up to keep out treasure-seekers who have heard Annat’s story in Israeli media.

‘Pregnant man’ Thomas Beatie gives birth to second child

Thomas Beatie, who is legally male but decided to keep his female sex organs during chest reconstruction surgery and testosterone therapy, attracted worldwide headlines last year after revealing his pregnancy.

The 35-year-old gave birth to a baby girl in Oregon last July and on Tuesday celebrated the arrival of a second child, a baby boy, ABC News reported.

Mr Beatie was last year dubbed the ‘pregnant man’ after appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s television talkshow to discuss his pregnancy.

“I feel it’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human need. I’m a person and I have the right to have a biological child,” he said.

Mr Beatie revealed that he’d been “shocked” by the amount of publicity the couple had received, insisting they were just like any other family.

“We are a man, woman and child. It’s ironic that we are so different but yet, we’re just a family, just the same as anyone else,” he said.

When asked why he made many people uneasy, he said, “I think that people are not used to seeing the image of a pregnant man.

“And it’s causing a lot of people to think. … I used my female reproductive organs to become a father.”

Chris Brown Loses Bid to Delay Hearing

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Chris Brown lost a bid to delay a preliminary hearing in his assault case, which his attorney argued should wait for a related California Supreme Court decision.

Brown’s attorney, Mark Geragos, filed an appeal earlier this month to try to delay the R&B singer’s preliminary hearing, now scheduled for June 22.

Two justices from California’s Second District Court of Appeal signed an order Wednesday rejecting the arguments. The order did not give a reason why.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg last month rejected a bid by Geragos to get access to police records that the attorney argued were crucial to the hearing. Geragos’ appeal states that a state Supreme Court case currently under consideration could affect Brown’s access to the records and he was seeking a delay on those grounds.

Geragos argued that if the Supreme Court ruled defendants have access to certain police files before the preliminary hearing, as opposed to afterward – as is currently the case – then Brown could be subjected to “the expense and degradation of two preliminary hearings.”

Donald Trump ousts Prejean as Miss California

Miss California USA Carrie Prejean, who stirred up trouble for herself when she said gays shouldn’t be allowed to marry, got two dreaded words from pageant poobah Donald Trump on Wednesday:

“You’re fired.” Trump and other pageant leaders said Prejean was being sacked not because of the remarks but because she hadn’t been holding up her end of the agreement she signed when she entered the pageant.

“This was a decision based solely on contract violations, including Ms. Prejean’s unwillingness to make appearances on behalf of the Miss California USA organization,” the California pageant’s executive director, Keith Lewis, said in a statement.

He had complained at a news conference last month that Prejean was skipping Miss California USA events while speaking out against gay marriage at unsanctioned appearances.

After the complaints reached Trump, who owns Miss California USA’s parent organization, the mogul decided to give her a second chance and keep her on. On Thursday, he changed his mind.

Chris, 20, has employed increased security due to recent death threats that authorities believe to be serious.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a ‘group’ calling themselves the Women’s Protection Action League have been issuing threats on his life due to the singer’s charges for beating Rihanna on Grammy Awards weekend.

Chris has been charged with felony assault in the altercation with Rihanna and is due back in court on June 22.

Since the early 1990s, science has suggested a link between antisocial behavior and a defect in the gene that codes for an enzyme called monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A). A low level of activity on the MAO-A gene results in an excessive breakdown of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, which helps keep humans calm and happy. The defect thereby increases the urge to react aggressively to threats or fears, leading MAO-A to be referred to as the “warrior” gene. (See 20 ways to get and stay happy.)

The latest research, however, takes the association one step further. It is the first to link low activity on the MAO-A allele in young men both to an increased likelihood of joining a gang and to a greater tendency to use weapons and violence. “For the first time, we were able to establish a direct connection between the MAO-A gene and the choosing of a violent lifestyle,” says Kevin Beaver, a biosocial criminologist at FSU and lead author of the study published in Comprehensive Psychiatry.

From the beginning of Facebook, people have used their real names to share and connect with the people they know. This authenticity helps to create a trusted environment because you know the identity of the people and things on Facebook. The one place, though, where your identity wasn’t reflected was in the Web address for your profile or the Facebook Pages you administer. The URL was just a randomly assigned number like “id=592952074.” That soon will change.

We’re planning to offer Facebook usernames to make it easier for people to find and connect with you. When your friends, family members or co-workers visit your profile or Pages on Facebook, they will be able to enter your username as part of the URL in their browser. This way people will have an easy-to-remember way to find you. We expect to offer even more ways to use your Facebook username in the future.

Your new Facebook URL is like your personal destination, or home, on the Web. People can enter a Facebook username as a search term on Facebook or a popular search engine like Google, for example, which will make it much easier for people to find friends with common names. Your username will have the same privacy setting as your profile name in Search, and you can always edit your search privacy settings here.

Starting at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday, June 13, you’ll be able to choose a username on a first-come, first-serve basis for your profile and the Facebook Pages that you administer by visiting www.facebook.com/username/. Steele: God Help White Men Appearing Before A Sotomayor Court

RNC Chairman Michael Steele isn’t shying away from highlighting race as a signifying issue of the Sonia Sotomayor Supreme Court nomination hearings.

In an interview with CNN’s Campbell Brown on Tuesday, the Republican Party leader insisted that white males would not be granted even-handed jurisprudence under a Court with Obama’s nominee.

“God help you if you’re a white male,” said Steele. “If you’re seeking justice, this may not be the bench you want to go before.”

The remarks come at a time when Republican officials have attempted to remove any semblance of racial politics from their opposition to Sotomayor’s nomination. Earlier on Tuesday, Sen. Mel Martinez, a Hispanic Republican from Florida, defended Sotomayor’s now-infamous “wise Latina” remarks as sensible.

(CNN) — The power of music and the power of politics met Tuesday, with a hip-hop mogul and one of the most prominent leaders in Congress joining their considerable forces to spotlight issues facing youth in America.

Russell Simmons hopes by investing in youths they can stay out of trouble and be more successful adults.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi attended a youth conference co-sponsored by entrepreneur and entertainer Russell Simmons in Washington. The one-day event, called Keeping the Promise to Our Children, brought legislators together with entertainment A-listers, including Oscar-nominee Terrence Howard, who used their celebrity to advocate a variety of causes: foster care, health care and education among them.

Simmons’ Hip Hop Summit Action Network and the nonprofit, California-based Children Uniting Nations hosted the event. This is the fourth conference organized by Daphna Ziman, an adoptive mother of a child formerly in foster care and founder of Children Uniting Nations, which matches children in foster care with mentors.

MAX B Found Guilty on Murder Charges

Former Byrd Gang rapper Max B was found guilty today for his involvement in a robbery that left one man dead.

While the details have yet to be revealed, the Harlem rapper’s rep has confirmed with XXLMag.com that a New Jersey judge has found him guilty. It is unclear how much time he was sentenced to.

Max, born Charly Wingate, was accused of being the mastermind behind a $30,000 heist targeting two wealthy men. Reportedly Max conspired with his step brother Kelvin Leerdam, and his girlfriend Gina Conway, who served as the prosecution’s secret weapon in the case against him. She turned on Max, testifying against Max in return for a shorter jail sentence.

UPDATE: Just moments after Max B was found guilty for his involvement in a deadly robbery in a New Jersey courtroom, XXLMag.com spoke to his attorney Gerald Saluti to find out the particulars of the verdict.

According to Saluti, Max faces life in prison after a jury convicted him of, “aggravated manslaughter, two counts of felony murder, three counts of armed robbery, and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery.”

Max is currently being detained in Bergan County Jail awaiting sentencing, set for July 31. He is facing life behind bars.

Charges Dropped in DMX Case x Remix verse for “Who’s Real”

DMX has finally gotten some reprieve from his legal troubles as assault charges were dropped against him yesterday (June 8) morning.

X had been charged with felony attempted aggravated assault for an altercation with a Tent City Jail guard, according to AllHipHop.com. The rapper was serving 90 days for animal cruelty and fraud charges.

The assault charges were dropped after X pleaded guilty, and received no further reprimand for the transgression, save 18 months of supervised probation.

“DMX is standing on the corner eating a hot dog at the court house in Phoenix and is now a free man,” said a representative for the rapper. “He is happy to be free and ready to begin his new life.“

NYC Parks Foundation Prepares Summer Concerts

Every year, the New York City Parks Foundation offers a series of events throughout the five boroughs of New York City in an effort to encourage and revitalize New York City public parks and their surrounding neighborhoods. City Parks Foundation focuses on “some of the city’s most underserved areas” and brings entertainment and other activities free of charge to communities who otherwise don’t get much attention.

This year, they’ve got a great line up of 11 Hip Hop artists performing, mostly in their home boroughs, ranging from the Sugar Hill Gang, Soulsonic Force and Slick Rick to KRS-One, DJ Premier vs. Pete Rock [click to read] and Naughty by Nature [click to read].

Rapper Maino is set to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at his rise in hip-hop with the upcoming documentary Unstoppable set to be released tomorrow (June 9).

Maino explained the film’s focus on the adversity he has faced and his struggles to overcome all obstacles.

“A lot of industry people didn’t believe in me when I first started pounding the streets,” he said via a statement. “Many said I wouldn’t make it off of mixtapes, now look…my album is dropping June 30th. Haters inspired me to write my last two hit records. Unstoppable is the story of my life and struggles to get to the position I’m in now. Maino grew up in an environment where selling drugs was more of a way of life than a criminal offense. Nickel and dimes eventually turned into handling weight and Maino’s fun in the streets was cut short when he was convicted of a drug related kidnapping and sentenced to 10 years in prison. While in prison, Maino sought the rap game as his gateway out of the hood. Albino “witchcraft” trials begin in Tanzania

Trials have started in Tanzania of 12 people accused of murdering albino people and selling their body parts for use in witchcraft.

More than 40 albinos have been killed there in the last 18 months.

Witchdoctors sell their albino potions for thousands of dollars, claiming they bring prosperity and good fortune.

Powerful businessmen are believed to be among the clients driving the trade. Dozens of people have been arrested, but none convicted so far.

Human rights organisations have expressed shock it has taken so long for the trials, in Shinyanga and Kahama in the north of the country, to begin.

BBC East Africa correspondent Will Ross says the justice system in Tanzania is notoriously slow and corrupt.

New phenomenon

Prejudice against them is widespread in Africa. But ritual killings in such numbers is a new phenomenon.

Both adults and children have been attacked in their homes, hacked to death or had their throats cut. Each body part can be worth thousands of dollars.
