The Lox‘s Styles P has announced plans to release his first fiction book called Mr. Invincible and a small tour this summer.

Keeping details to a minimum, the Ghost described what fans could expect from his release.

The book, which Styles describes as a “jail mystery,” is the D-Block rapper’s first foray into the literary world. “I got a fiction book called Mr. Invincible coming out Nicki Turner Presents,” Styles revealed to XXL. “It’s just a fiction joint. It’s a little story, I’m just trying to get in another lane and do something creative and you gonna get to see it in a minute.” When asked if he had any help putting the work together Styles replied, “They got a little editing team, but all the writing is me, all the idea is me, all the thought is me…We about to get on the road do a lil’ promo tour for that…Hit up Philly, VA, North Carolina, Connecticut, Boston and the Midwest and West too.” (XXLMag.com)

Styles previously spoke with SOHH about informing fans about issues outside of hip-hop via his Phantom Gangster Chronicles DVD last year.

“This is just the chance to just see real life sh*t in the industry instead of all this other sh*t you used to seeing on these DVDs and the same old footage and same old sh*t you hear,” he promised. “You gonna hear in-depth sh*t about how people make their money, how they spend their money, how they use some of their influences in life…We got a section about eating good. [There's] a section about exercising. So what you’re expecting is some real, real footage. As far as the mixtape, you can expect some real street sh*t, you know, just going in.” (SOHH)

Lebron James Discusses Losing To The Magic In Game 6

King James finally discusses the most crushing loss in his career.

Chicago’s Bloody Weekend: Shooting Violence Off The Charts

I had to basically re-post this whole article because of how underreported this violence in Chicago is and how it is mainly black on black men killing each other for basically what amounts to nothing.Kudos to Foster Kamer for shedding the light on this tragedy.

Picture 84A gruesome string of violence in Chicago in being investigated right now to see if any of it is connected in any way whatsoever. It’d almost be more comforting if it were. Otherwise, these numbers are incredibly frightening – not just for Chicago, but for any city.

From around 6AM Saturday to 6AM Sunday, seven deaths. All of the shootings that took place last night spanned the city. Something like this happened last year. Most of them are being looked at as gang related, with exception to a few.

The shootings, in no particular order: A grocery store owner was found fatally shot yesterday morning in the back of his store on the North Side. A drive-by on the Near West Side that killed one. Three brothers, one fatally shot in a drive-by on the South Side. Three men shot, two fatally after a verbal spat on the West Side. A 26 year-old fatally shot in a drive-by on the Southwest Side. A 28 year-old fatally shot on the Southeast Side, sitting outside his home.

Elsewhere, Thursday night, five were shot in a drive-by on the South Side, including a 15 year-old kid, Friday evening, a guy who hijacked an empty school bus with one other employee aboard was killed at the end of the confrontation by police, and this morning, a 46 year-old man at a grocery store on the South Side was leaving with his groceries when he – as the story goes – pulled out a gun and aimed it at the store’s security guard. After a struggle, the guard managed to shoot his assailant in the leg twice; the assailant’s now in stable condition. “Police said the man may be homeless and credited the guard,” notes the story, but there’s something strange about a homeless guy being able to produce a gun. Possible, but doesn’t seem likely. Finally, a 65 year-old man killed himself after a long standoff with police.

What’s going on in Chicago that’s causing all the violence this weekend? Totally rampant speculation: probably some unconnected extreme instances, and gang violence heating up (as it tends to do in the summer, when younger members are less likely to be in school). It can’t help that their cops – like so many other large cities – have a reputation for being crooked. But Chicago’s? In the last week, a Fire and Police City Council chair being brought up on corruption charges, in addition to a cop being indicted with a mob boss.

The only story on the wires about this is a small AP piece noting the number of shootings of the last night. Not to suggest some kind of vast, far-reaching, Salinger-backpocketing media conspiracy, but it’s going to be interesting to see how these types of things are treated over the next few months in the Chicago and national media with the city’s Olympic bid decision coming up in four months. Could just be a random string of shootings. It could be a pattern of American Violence that simply goes unnoticed until it comes up in number clusters like this. Whatever it is, it’s really, really terrible for all of us. And a kick-you-when-you’re-down item I had nowhere else to put: a Chicago petting zoo burned down Thursday, killing 75% of the animals in it. So maybe Chicago’s just having one of those terribly unforgiving weeks. Probably not, though.

A Quick Look At The New $5 Napster

June 1, 2009 1 comment

Napster

What Do You Think Of The New Napster?

I’ve spent some time on the new Napster service over the last few days, and aside from a less than intuitive interface, I can’t find much to dislike.  At just $5 a month for unlimited streaming of a deep catalog along with 5 mp3′s monthly, the service is effectively free.  And if I’m in Napster previewing a track or album (and since they’ve already got my credit card), why not just buy it there instead of jumping over to Amazon or iTunes?

Reports are that Napster got a special deal on streaming licenses from the labels…

in part because they tied listening so closely to purchase. There is probably no one size fits all model that will dominate the digital music future. Many (myself included) love Spotify both for its model and an iTunes like interface. But imeem, Pandora, Last.fm and others also each approach music discovery and enjoyment from their own intriguing angles.

I suspect that there’s an audience for the new $5 model, paticularly for those comfortable with the Napster and parent Best Buy brands.

ReverbNation To Indie Artists: We’ll Pay You To Give Away Your Music

reverbnation_logo
ReverbNation today announced that about 1000 of its almost 400,000 artist members will be eligible to participate in a new revenue generating Sponsored Songs program.  The initiative makes it possible to tap into the kind of major brand relationships that have typically been elusive for unsigned and indie talent.

“Traditionally the music business has been synonymous with the record business where the lion’s share of revenue came from selling music. With reduced emphasis on music sales, the music business must develop new revenue streams that leverage the artist as a brand,” Michael Doernberg, CEO of ReverbNation said in a statement. ReverbNation will pay participating musicians $.50 per free download with each track incorporating a small section of branded messaging within the digital cover art displayed every time the song is played.

The downloads, which the company confirmed to Hypebot will be in the MP3 and M4A formats, will be offered to fans on a set of branded landing pages. When a fan initiates a download, patent pending technology…

merges the brand’s message into the digital cover art and songs are tracked as they are passed from fan to fan. Much of the value to the advertiser is that their message continues to spread along with the track as it is shared virally from directly fan to fan and via P2P.

The first Sponsored Songs campaign will begin mid June and last 90 days. ReverbNation’s Band Equity Score and the Artists’ fan demographic profiles will be used to determine which are invited to participate. Accepted artists will provide songs and also use ReverbNation’s marketing tools to promote the downloads.

Hypebot expects to be able to be able to be the first to share  details of this program within about two weeks. For more information about this program now send an email to sponsoredsongs[at]reverbnation.com

Demo Reel: Playstation to release ‘PSP Go!’

PSP_GO_000.bmp

This looks very cool. I will find some more concrete info about this in a few.

Live images have leaked of Sony‘s PSP Go, set to launch at next week’s E3. Looks like those rumors were true: It’s a UMD-less slider with 16GB of memory, and it’ll ship this fall. No price yet, but that should come with the official announcement next week. Update with video:

All this leakage stems from the June issue of Qore, which is a bit of a slip-up on Sony’s part. The Go looks to keep the single analog joystick, though the overall design is quite a bit more playful and, well, circular than previous iterations of the PSP. Notice we didn’t say “attractive”: the circle section that houses the start and select buttons especially has kind of a late-90s feel to it, but we’ll have to see how it looks in the hand. It should be packing Bluetooth and a memory card slot (probably MemoryStick, grah) in addition to the 16GB of internal memory.

Family axes wedding plans, Egyptian cuts off penis

bloody_knife

via MyFreeze

A 25-year-old Egyptian man cut off his own penis to spite his family after he was refused permission to marry a girl from a lower class family, police reported Sunday.

After unsuccessfully petitioning his father for two years to marry the girl, the man heated up a knife and sliced off his reproductive organ, said a police official.

The young man came from a prominent family in the southern Egyptian province of Qena, one of Egypt’s poorest and most conservative areas that is also home to the famed ancient Egyptian ruins of Luxor.

The man was rushed to the hospital but doctors were unable to reattach the severed member, the official added citing the police report filed after the incident.

Prepare For The Facebook Vanity URL Landrush

facebook_

via TechCrunch

Facebook will soon be allowing all users to claim a vanity URL pointing to their regular profile page, we’ve heard from a reliable source. The announcement should come sometime later this week. Afterwards, at a certain date and time, the landrush will begin. Users will be able to grab a vanity URL of their choice.

The Landrush rules will prohibit trademark infringement and a lots of words will be blacklisted, such as generic terms. But for the most part, we hear, users will be able to grab a name that they like.

Facebook has been toying with vanity URLs for some time. URLs for user profiles are currently user id numbers – such as facebook.com/profile.php?id=500065899 (that’s me). In March some Facebook pages started rolling out with vanity URLs, although you must have a business relationship with Facebook (or know someone there) to get one. Facebook.com/techcrunch, for example, links to our TechCrunch page.

The reason they need them – vanity URLs have proven to be a powerful tool on MySpace, Twitter and other services. It’s not just that users like them and it makes telling people your profile name easier. People have also long used MySpace URLs as their online identity. Twitter, more recently, has started to become the online identity provider of choice. Even Google is getting in on the vanity URL game. Facebook doesn’t want to give that up. Read more…

Guantanamo: the Xbox game

guantanamo_1413724c

via Telegraph UK

Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg will take the starring role in a new computer game based on life at the prison camp.  Begg, from Birmingham, was captured by the CIA and thrown in jail at Guantanamo Bay in 2003.

The 41-year-old, who was released in 2005, will now feature as himself in the game for Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

In the game, players control a detainee at the camp, which has been sold by the US Government to a shadowy agency called Freedom Corp.

Before he is subjected to torture and scientific experiments, the character must shoot his way out of the detention camp to bring down his captors.

Moazzam, who has a financial stake in the game, said he has not yet received any money from the producers.

He said: “The software firm approached me with this idea about making a game based on my experience in Guantanamo.

“My first response was hesitation – I was worried that it might trivialise my experience. Read more…

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT FROM ‘RENEGADE’: Obama On Clinton Pick: “I’m Not Begging Her To Take This Job”

via HuffPost

In an exclusive excerpt from Newsweek Senior White House correspondent Richard Wolffe’s new book, “Renegade: The Making of a President,” Wolffe details the internal debates within the Obama camp over whether to select Hillary Clinton as secretary of state.RENEGADE-

Wolffe will discuss his new book on NBC’s“Today” show on Monday morning.

Of all his transition choices, none was easier to make, or more complex to execute, than Hillary Clinton as secretary of state. Obama had long wanted his former rival on his team, no matter what his friends and aides said about her aggressive campaign… His staff opposed the idea for the most part, arguing that Clinton would never be truly loyal. But Obama was willing to leave the primaries behind, including his own strong feelings at the time. “I don’t hold grudges,” he told his aides. “I don’t worry about the past. I’m concerned about what happens now. If she can help me and Bill Clinton isn’t too much of a liability, we should seriously look at this.” …

Obama was under no illusion about the legacy of the long primary season. During one transition meeting, Obama said he wanted to offer Clinton the diplomatic job. “I’m really interested in pursuing this, but I know she has some hard feelings coming out of this campaign.” Emanuel and John Podesta, the former Clinton official who ran the transition, assured Obama that she was over those hard feelings now. Obama smiled and said, “Believe me. She’s not over it yet.”

His decision to offer her the job of secretary of state came surprisingly early. Well before the end of the primaries, when his staff and friends still felt hostile to her, Obama decided that Clinton possessed the qualities to carry his diplomacy to the rest of the world. “We actually thought during the primary, when we were pretty sure we were going to win, that she could end up being a very effective secretary of state,” he told me later. “I felt that she was disciplined, that she was precise, that she was smart as a whip, and that she would present a really strong image to the world…I had that mapped out.” Read more…

Female Florida teachers can’t stop F*ing their Students

This sounds similiar to the epidemic of priest sodomizing young boys a few years back, but probably is a little more accepatable due to the fact some of these young boys might have a case of serious ‘hot for teacher’.

But I do concur that if these cases were purely men on young girls that the outrage and individual cases would be covered like the swine flu. Anyway Time Magazine has a in depth article on this phenomenon down south:

Picture 75

If you’re the parent of a teen-aged boy in Florida, you probably muttered “not again” while reading your morning newspaper this week. There on the front page was yet another case of an adult female teacher being arrested for admitting to having had sex with an underage male student. This time the alleged perp was Maria Guzman Hernandez, a 32-year-old instructor at the private Our Lady of Charity school in Hialeah; her victim was 15. But she just as well could have been the 34-year-old Jacksonville public-school science teacher arrested last month for allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old student, once in her SUV; or the 32-year-old St. Petersburg teacher collared in March for allegedly “sexting” nude pictures of herself to an 8th-grade boy; or the 45-year-old teacher at a private Christian academy in South Daytona arrested days before for allegedly having sex with a boy from her class in various Daytona Beach hotels.

Picture 76

Maria Guzman Hernandez

Other female teachers in Florida have been booked for the same crime this year — and scores of others have also been arrested or disciplined in the past few years for sexual misconduct with students, according to a recent investigation by the Orlando
Sentinel, which noted the problem is rising in the state “among female educators in particular.” Florida, of course, is hardly the only state where female teachers have been nabbed for preying on boys. And nationwide, male teachers still commit far more sexual misconduct than females. A 2004 Education Department study found that about 10% of the nation’s 50 million public-school students had experienced some kind of improper sexual attention from teachers and other school employees; and a 2007 Associated Press report indicated that men were involved almost 90% of the time. What’s more, even in Florida those offenders are a small fraction of the state’s more than 200,000 public and private school teachers. (View the Top 10 Crime Stories of 2008.)

But parents and prosecutors alike are nonetheless asking why the female version of pedagogue perversion seems more common on their peninsula compared to other places. “It certainly seems more prevalent, although we can’t say for sure if it’s worse than other large states,” says Michael Sinacore, the Hillsborough County assistant state attorney who, in 2005, prosecuted one of Florida’s most high-profile cases, that of Tampa middle-school teacher Debra Lafave, a blond siren who pleaded guilty to lewd and lascivious behavior after being charged with having sex with a 14-year-old boy. (In a controversial decision, a judge did not make her serve prison time.) “None of us can really say why at this point.”

Blockbuster videogame line-up to spark E3 magic

E3

via Breitbart

Videogame makers are defying horrid economic times with an annual Electronic Entertainment Expo(E3) brimming with blockbuster titles and unbridled pizzazz.

The expo kicking off Tuesday in Los Angeles is expected to revive dazzle of years past and offer previews of hot videogames that will hit the market for the prime year-end holiday shopping season.

“We are starting to see an industry waking up to the fact that we’ve been out of the limelight,” saidScott Steinberg, publisher of DigitalTrends.com, a game and gadget website with 40 million readers.

“E3 is the public face of the industry. You will see all sorts of surprises. At this point, it is anyone’s game.”

Videogame sales grew through much of the financial crisis, but slid in March and April of this year, according to industry figures.

Analysts remain optimistic about videogames, citing surveys indicating players would rather cut back on other entertainment, such as movies or dining out.

Major videogame makers are playing it safe by rolling out sequels to hit franchises and freshening faded successes.

French videogame star Ubisoft will show off “Assassins Creed 2″ and “Red Steel 2″ along with the latest in a line of popular “Rabbids” titles featuring zany animated rabbits.

Ubisoft will also unveil videogames made from television game shows “Family Feud,” “The Price Is Right” and “Press Your Luck” tailored for Nintendo’s Wii consoles. Read more…
