In 2003, two film students from Australia (James Wan, and Leigh Whannell) made a gruesome short about a serial killer who places victims in twisted scenarios that force them to either kill themselves or other victims, thereby “cleaning” the killer of any association to the murders. The goal of this short, based on a feature they had stored away, was to pitch it to various studios and actors in hope of having the full-length distributed. In 2004, their wish came true, and the original ended up spawning five Saw sequels – most of which more cruel and torturous than the previous. In fact, Saw is often credited as starting a brand of “torture porn” in recent horror films. We’re sure Wan and Whannell’s mothers are proud.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – The final numbers are in for Lil Wayne’s 2008-2009 North American touring, and it appears the rapper will have the highest grossing hip-hop outing of the year — and the most lucrative rap jaunt that Billboard has ever tracked.
Seventy-eight Lil Wayne headlining arena and amphitheater concerts in North America from December 14, 2008, through September 6, 2009, grossed about $42 million and drew nearly 804,000 fans, according to Shawn Gee, Lil Wayne’s tour producer and tour business manager.
“It’s definitely one of the biggest in the last couple of years,” Gee tells Billboard.com. “Our plan was to prove that Wayne was a viable headlining arena artist.”

Nor do I see Steve Jobs expressing much interest in coordinating his marketing announcements with the likes of Viacom.”

Glenn Beck has tweeted a call for followers to dig up dirt on Obama administration figures, and Keith Olbermann aims to turn the tables, making a bid for inside info on the Fox News host himself. “Find everything you can about Glenn Beck, Stu Burguiere, and Roger Ailes,” he blogs on Daily Kos. The MSNBC host plans to set up a “dedicated email address to accept leads, tips, contacts, on Beck, his radio producer Burguiere, and the chief of his TV enablers, Ailes.”
This, Olbermann writes, is an effort “to prove various cliches about goose and gander, and to remind everybody to walk softly and carry a big popsicle, and most particularly to save this nation from the Oligarhy of The Stupid.”

But the German group behind the campaign, which also features Saddam Hussein and Joseph Stalin, argues the ad’s shock value will help spread AIDS awareness.

Harlem, New York rapper Max B. was sentenced to 75 years in prison today (September 3) for his role in a botched robbery that led to a double murder in a Fort Lee, New Jersey hotel.
Max B., born Charly Wingate, appeared in a Hackensack, New Jersey court today with co-defendant Kevin Leerdam.
Max B. and Leerdam were convicted on charges of felony murder, kidnapping and armed robbery for planning and robbing Allan Plowden and David Taylor at a Holiday Inn in September of 2006.
Taylor was shot and killed during the robbery, which was planned with Max B.’s ex-girl friend Gina Conway, who testified against the pair during their June trial.
Max B. was not happy with the situation and fired his attorney Gerald Saluti, just before the 75-year sentenced was handed down.

It seems that online magazine Slate Magazine takes the ideals of journalism more seriously than the Daily News, which ran a story celebrating lies old-school rapper Roxanne Shante has spread over the last decade about receiving a PH.D from Cornell University. In this digital age, Slate used old-fashion methods of fact checking that apparently slipped the mind of Daily News writer, Walter Dawkins.

According to Warner, neither it nor any of its subsidiary record labels ever had a contract with Shanté, and it was not obligated to pay for her education. Indeed, there’s no evidence that it ever did.
Shanté—real name Lolita Shanté Gooden—doesn’t have a Ph.D. from Cornell or anywhere else. Indeed, she admitted it in an interview with Slate. And Cornell has no record of Gooden (or “Shanté”) ever attending or receiving a degree.
According to Marymount Manhattan College records, Shanté enrolled there but dropped out less than four months later without ever earning a degree.
New York state records indicate that no one named Lolita Gooden or Roxanne Shanté is licensed to practice psychology or any related field.

While working on my thesis documentary Little Miss Hip Hop, I briefly spoke with Roxanne Shante who said she would be up for an interview and speaking at the University at Buffalo about opportunities for women in hip hop. However, I never heard from Roxanne Shante after I explained that I wanted to set up an interview at her office and I wanted her to share information about her practice. I thought that I was just being dissed, when in reality Roxanne Shante was avoiding the truth.
