Navy Ammo Named after Medgar Edvers
A Navy ammunition ship will be named today for the late civil rights leader Medgar Evers.
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus is scheduled to make the announcement at noon Friday at the 26th Annual Fannie Lou Hamer Memorial Symposium Lecture Series at Jackson State University.
Evers was a field secretary and chapter organizer for the NAACP in his native Mississippi, where he led civil rights efforts to secure the right to vote for African-Americans and to integrate public facilities, schools and restaurants.
He was assassinated June 12, 1963 when he was gunned down in the driveway of his home. He was just 37 years old.
