Chicago police have launched an internal investigation into a group of officers working a special detail at last month’s G-20 summit in Pittsburgh after a video surfaced documenting potential misconduct, the Tribune reports.

The video shows nearly a dozen Chicago cops gathering around a handcuffed man while another officer apparently takes a group photo. The Tribune identified the handcuffed man as Kyle Kramer, a college student. Kramer appears to have been brought out and put on the ground in front of the officers as the centerpiece of the picture.

TORONTO (Reuters) – BlackBerry maker Research In Motion is launching a new version of its touchscreen Storm smartphone, marking its latest move in the fight with Apple’s iPhone.

The Storm2, as the device is known, is “a biggie for us,” RIM co-Chief Executive Jim Balsillie said in an interview.

The smartphone retains the original Storm’s clickable touchscreen interface, but improves upon it with faster typing and “multitouch” capabilities, which allow users to type on more than just one part of the screen at a time.

The phone is enabled for next-generation networks and also has Wi-Fi capability like some of the other devices in the BlackBerry lineup.

Mobile communications giant Vodafone announced on Thursday that the Storm2 will be available in time for the Christmas gift buying season in seven European countries and South Africa.

NEW ORLEANS – A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

“I’m not a racist. I just don’t believe in mixing the races that way,” Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. “I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else.”

Bardwell said he asks everyone who calls about marriage if they are a mixed race couple. If they are, he does not marry them, he said.

Bardwell said he has discussed the topic with blacks and whites, along with witnessing some interracial marriages. He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said.

“There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage,” Bardwell said. “I think those children suffer and I won’t help put them through it.”

Now I myself have loved and watched Bill Cosby for years, but I like a lot of people took exception to his recent rumblings in the media about the state of the ‘black community’. I may have disagreed with his approach, but the issues definitely needed to be brought up and discussed(we all have that older uncle or grandfather who is gonna tell it like it is whether we like it or not).

But Instead of running and hiding after some minor backlash, Mr. Cosby has resurfaced with a new cd and a virtual town hall meeting, where hopes to bring forth some Hip Hop music and discussions to “create dialogue and action”. He should be commended for his efforts while other celebs ignore issues of the same black communities they were born and raised in and were lucky to make it out.

Mr. Cosby needs you to speak out at this virtual town hall meeting on Monday On Oct. 19. Cosby and the Cosnarati Band will kick off this whole project with a virtual town hall meeting in New York City. It is presented in association with Ustream and the town hall starts at 7pm EDT (4pm PDT) on urban radio station web sites across the country as well as billcosby.com and facebook.com/billcosby.

The Cosnarati band will perform a few songs from the upcoming album for the first time ever during this event.  The songs will be available at digital retailers on Oct. 20, to be followed by the album’s Nov. 24 physical and digital release.

AKEVILLE, Mass — Police along with the Secret Service are investigating after a local country club discovered a symbol that represents eastern religious beliefs carved into the green.

Lakeville Country Club workers discovered the vandalism early Monday morning.

Police believe the vandals meant to carve a swastika next to President Barack Obama’s name on the 18th hole; however, the symbol was backwards and means hope and peace in some Eastern countries.

SENATE APPROVES HEALTH CARE REFORM

WASHINGTON – With support from a lone Republican, a key Senate committee Tuesday approved a middle-of-the-road health care planthat moves President Barack Obama‘s goal of wider and affordable coverage a giant step closer to becoming law.

Maine Republican Olympia Snowe said she was laying aside misgivings for now and voting to advance the bill, a sweeping $829-billon, 10-year health care remake that would help most Americans get coverage without creating a new government insurance plan. “When history calls, history calls,” said Snowe.

Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., called his bill “a commonsense, balanced solution.” A distance runner, Baucus has endured months of marathon meetings to get this far. It’s not the finish line.

15 Year-Old Kiwane Carrington, Fatally Shot by Police

On Friday afternoon, Oct. 9, 2009, Champaign police fatally shot an unarmed 15 year-old African American named Kiwane Carrington. The name of the Champaign police officer who did the shooting or how many police officers were involved has not been released. The Illinois State Police are currently investigating the death.

Champaign police responded to a call at 1:20 p.m. of an alleged burglary in the 900 block of W. Vine St. According to a statement from Champaign police at 5:30 p.m., they were “confronted” by two 15 year olds when they arrived. Both refused to obey the officers and get on the ground. A physical struggle ensued during which a weapon “was discharged resulting in the fatal wounding of one of the subjects.” Although the names of the officers involved in the struggle have not been released, Champaign Police Chief R. T. Finney’s shoulder was sprained in the incident.

The second youth was arrested, charged with residential burglary, and taken to the Youth Detention Center. Because he is a juvenile, his name is not being released.

15 Year-Old Set on Fire in Florida

Youth Violence is everywhere.  Regardless of race or sexual orientation, bullying is on the rise and needs to be addressed.  This is more serious than an old-school fight at recess.

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — Three juveniles are in custody in connection with an attack on a 15-year-old boy who was deliberately set on fire near a Deerfield Beach apartment complex pool, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies were called to the Lime Tree apartments in reference to a teen who suffered a burn injury at about 3:15 p.m. Monday.When deputies and firefighters arrived, they found the victim, Michael Brewer, sitting in a lawn chair near the pool. The teen had been burned extensively above the waist, and he said that he was splashed with a flammable liquid and then set on fire.

He became a prime target, he says. “It was everyday for 28 months, for 16 hours a day. Nothing I did was good enough; all of my achievements were overshadowed by ridicule of my sexuality.”

In its own investigation of the Bahrain unit, the Navy found more than 90 incidents of hazing and other abuses. It says sailors were “hog-tied’ … force-fed liver dog treats and told to make dog and duck sounds” and “…duct-taped to a chair, rolled outside, and then left in a dog kennel until released.” That last example, Rocha says, was about him.

According to the investigation, Rocha and several others in his unit also allege the man who ordered much of the abuse was Chief Master-at-Arms Michael Toussaint. “He loved his authority. He loved his power,” says Shaun Hogan, who served in Bahrain with Rocha and says he was hazed as well. He and other sailors told CNN that Toussaint created such an atmosphere of fear, no one was immune – even Toussaint’s number two, Jennifer Valdivia.
