Murder Investigation: Chicago Robbed of Community Hero, Melvin Burnside
Today, I watched my father shed a tear for the loss of his friend, Melvin Burnside as his photos, family and supporters flashed across Chicago news shows. 53, Melvin was murdered in his Riverdale home and was rushed to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey where he was soon after reported dead.
Growing up, my dad told me countless stories about Melvin and his favorite southside spot, Reese’s. Earlier this year, finally old enough to get in, I went with my family to Reese’s for drinks and Steppin’. Like a scene from Cheers, Melvin knew my dad’s favorite drink and greeted our family with warm smiles and laughter.
Let’s celebrate the life of our community hero, Melvin Burnside, for being an entrepreneur, devoted father and providing college scholarships to the youth. Let’s also follow his example of love and community and be shining lights in Chicago.
I encourage anyone who knows anything about the murder of Melvin Burnside to contact Chicago police. When we see something, we should say something because we never know when the next fatality will be our own.
