Tyler Perry and LIONSGATE to launch Cable Network
Spike Lee is fuming at this news right here. I could definitely seeing this happening next year and I would not bet against this being successful. For all the critiques of Perry’s films who feel they are chock full of cooness and stereotypes this is not a good sign.

Tyler TV, which is still a working title, is intended as a home base for the prolific Mr. Perry — just as Ms. Winfrey, one of Mr. Perry’s most ardent supporters, now operates OWN. But as OWN demonstrates, cable plans that seem promising can be tricky. Ms. Winfrey’s channel, a partnership with Discovery Communications, has been a major ratings disappointment.

Spike Lee to Direct Wesley Snipes in James Brown Biopic
via MTV
James Brown is the lone Godfather of Soul, and even if he looks a lot like Wesley Snipes in Spike Lee’s upcoming biopic, Lee wants to make sure there’s one recognizable voice coming through the microphone when the legendary figure appears on-screen.
“We’re doing it together – it’s going to happen,” Lee told MTV News in an exclusive interview at the Sundance Film Festival this week. The Oscar nominated director of “Do the Right Thing” and “Inside Man” lavished praise on Snipes. “He’s my man,” Lee said; but when it comes to the vocals on Brown’s classic tracks like “I Got You (I Feel Good)” and “Get Up Offa That Thing,” expect to hear the authentic voice of James Brown being dubbed in. “I want to hear James Brown’s voice,” the director said. “That’s just my personal taste.”
He’s not the first filmmaker to take the dubbing route in a musical biopic. Taylor Hackford dubbed Ray Charles’ original voice over Jamie Foxx in “Ray.” “I know Joaquin Phoenix in ‘Walk the Line,’ he did some of the singing,” Lee said, breaking down the decision. “I’m a purist,” he explained. Lee and Paramount grabbed Snipes to play Brown in 2007. The project came together shortly after Brown died in 2006 of congested heart failure. Snipes’ big-screen energy summoning Brown’s near mythological stage presence will obviously carry a hefty punch. You have to feel the demands being place on Snipes, though, just to physically imitate James Brown to the point of syncing with his vocals. That task alone should make “Demolition Man” feel like a jog through through Park City, Utah, by contrast. Do you think Spike Lee is doing the right thing by dubbing in James Brown’s original voice? Do you think Wesley Snipes is a good fit for the part? Speak up and let everyone know in the comments section below!
Spike Lee: “I’m Not Rich, Rich”
Hey Spike you’re hood rich, we get it! Consider yourself lucky, atleast you didn’t get taken to the cleaners by Madoff (lol)
via Huffington Post
Spike Lee gave a long interview to Britain’s Sunday Observer, and explained to the reporter that despite a Manhattan townhouse, Martha’s Vineyard home and kids in private school, he is not wealthy:He told me he had always intended his kids to go, as he did, to state schools. “But my wife put the kibosh on that,” he said. Lee balks at being described as wealthy. “It’s not rich rich,” he told me. “Rich is Spielberg. Lucas. Gates. Steve Jobs. Jay-Z! Bruce Springsteen. I’m not complaining. But that’s money. Will Smith. Oprah Winfrey – that’s a ton of money. Compared to them, I’m on welfare!”
The interview, which took place at intervals in 2008 before Barack Obama’s election, also relays Lee’s distaste for the Clintons and Cindy McCain:
“Who’s going to be the vice-presidential pick?” Robin Burgess, the session co-ordinator and Blanchard’s wife, asked.
“As long as it’s not Hillary,” Lee said.
“You know,” Blanchard said in a wondering tone, “we got friends uptown who say they can’t stand Michelle. I mean, what about McCain’s wife?”
“Stepford wife,” Lee muttered.
“I used to like Bill Clinton,” Blanchard said.
Lee shook his head. “They showed their hand,” he said.
Spike Lee to Make Film Out of Live Musical
via Yahoo
NEW YORK – Spike Lee will film “Passing Strange,” Stew’s rock musical journey of self-discovery, during performances next week at Broadway’s Belasco Theatre, it was announced Wednesday.
The movie, budgeted at about $2 million, will be shot July 19 at both the matinee and evening performances, Steve Klein, the film’s producer, said Wednesday at a news conference. The stage production will also be filmed at two other times in the theater without audiences present.
“Musicians are the greatest artists on this Earth,” said Lee, a big fan of the musical since seeing it at the Public Theater last year. “What we are really doing is really a hybrid. We are filming the play.”
Spike vs. Clint- Part Three…War of the Words Continue
via The Guardian
The acrimonious feud between two of Hollywood’s best-known film directors reached a new level of name-calling and accusation at the weekend as Spike Lee invoked America’s bitter legacy of slavery in response to Clint Eastwood’s comments to the Guardian on Friday.
Responding to Lee’s criticism of his second world war films for ignoring black soldiers, Eastwood said America’s most influential black director, should “shut his face”.
But after the remarks were reported around the world, Lee hit back, reminding the older man that they were not “on a plantation”.
The reference to times when a white man could tell a black slave what to do came after Lee first issued a raft of fresh accusations against 78-year-old Eastwood, who has won five Oscars and boasts a string of celebrated gritty film roles, including “Dirty Harry” Callahan.
Lee, who has been nominated for two Academy awards, has made his own second world war film, Miracle at Santa Anna, which highlights an all-black US army division.

Eastwood Fires Back, Says Spike Lee Should ‘Shut His Mouth’
Can’t we all just get along? Clint Eastwood has some choice words for Spike Lee‘s criticisms of his depiction of the role of black soldiers in his biopic “Flag of Our Fathers.” Read below:
via Guardian
Eastwood has no time for Lee’s gripes. “He was complaining when I did Bird [the 1988 biopic of Charlie Parker]. Why would a white guy be doing that? I was the only guy who made it, that’s why. He could have gone ahead and made it. Instead he was making something else.” As for Flags of Our Fathers, he says, yes, there was a small detachment of black troops on Iwo Jima as a part of a munitions company, “but they didn’t raise the flag. The story is Flags of Our Fathers, the famous flag-raising picture, and they didn’t do that. If I go ahead and put an African-American actor in there, people’d go, ‘This guy’s lost his mind.’ I mean, it’s not accurate.”
Lee shouldn’t be demanding African-Americans in Eastwood’s next picture, either. Changeling is set in Los Angeles during the Depression, before the city’s make-up was changed by the large black influx. “What are you going to do, you gonna tell a fuckin’ story about that?” he growls. “Make it look like a commercial for an equal opportunity player? I’m not in that game. I’m playing it the way I read it historically, and that’s the way it is. When I do a picture and it’s 90% black, like Bird, I use 90% black people.”
Eastwood pauses, deliberately – once it would have provided him with the beat in which to spit out his cheroot before flinging back his poncho – and offers a last word of advice to the most influential black director in American movies. “A guy like him should shut his face.”

Nas Debuts “Be A NIGGER Too” Cinematic Video [pic gallery]
STREET KNOWLEDGE was in the house last night for the debut of Nas’ “Be A Nigger Too” cinematic video. Directed by Rik Cordero and starring the multiple antics of Ephraim “Fetti” Benton and supporting cast (Danny Hoch, John Cho, Gbenga Akinnagbe) the controversial clip to the controversial first single off of the controversial album formerly known as “Nigger” is sure to have editors up at BET and MTV on the edge of their seats. Cordero borrowed from the theme first explored in Spike Lee‘s 25th Hour, positioning Nas in front of a mirror a la Ed Norton where he goes in on himself, painting everyone as NIGGERS with one fell swoosh. The cinematic effects were captivating and the hanging scene will have viewers gasping in disbelief.

Spike Lee to Make Mike Jordan Doc
via SOHH
Spike Lee announced plans to film a documentary on basketball icon Michael Jordan earlier this week. While promoting his upcoming flick Miracle at St. Anna at the Cannes Film Festival, Lee revealed he is set to shoot a feature length documentary about Jordan.
According to Variety reports, the National Basketball Association will provide financing for the project, which is being produced by Lee’s 40 Acres & a Mule Filmworks. Lee told the Cannes crowd he hopes to bring Jordan and the film to next years festival.
“Mike wants to come to Cannes, so hopefully we will be here next year,” Lee said.
The Brooklyn director and hoops star share a long history of collaborating in television commercials for Nike. Lee’s project is expected to include extensive previously unseen footage captured by NBA cameras during Jordan’s final two seasons in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003.
As SOHH previously reported, Lee’s cameras also recently followed Kobe Bryant for an ESPN films documentary project. That footage is expected to air on ABC or ESPN sometime next year.

Spike Blasts Eastwood For Forgetting Black Soldiers in War Flicks…
Source : Times Online
Noted filmaker and actor Clint Eastwood has brought on the ire of fellow filmaker and actor Spike Lee for omitting black soldiers in his recent movies Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. Those movies were praised by critics but I guess they also forgot that black soldiers gave their lives in those historic battles also.(Is it me or is Spike basically arguing with a corpse?)
The Oscar-nominated African-American director, one of the most influential figures in contemporary cinema, said that black soldiers were conspicuous by their absence from Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. Hundreds took part in the battle for the Japanese island in 1945.
Lee said: “There were many African-Americans who survived that war and who were upset at Clint for not having one [in the films]. That was his version: the negro soldier did not exist. I have a different version.”
He was speaking at a press conference in Cannes, where he gave the world premiere of an eight-minute trailer for his latest feature film, a war drama with which he hopes to set the record straight.

Lebron Drops 50 on Knicks
In what has been one of the Knick’s worst seasons on record, Lebron “King” James and the new look Cavaliers came into town sporting a 5-2 record since their blockbuster trade a couple of weeks ago. Lebron who is a shoo-in for the MVP title(sans Kobe Bryant,Chris Paul) came to the biggest stage and just torched the Knicks.
He also gave Knick die-hard Spike Lee a blank stare and whispered that he would get “50 points”.Well folks we all know that he stuck to his words. King James also did a Jordanesque shot from half-court right before the buzzer rang for halftime. The kid is nice!!
note: If I see video of the half court buzzer beater, I will post.
