Nas Is Coming

STREET KNOWLEDGE was in the house last night for the debut of Nas’ “Be A Nigger Too” cinematic video. Directed by Rik Cordero and starring the multiple antics of Ephraim “Fetti” Benton and supporting cast (Danny Hoch, John Cho, Gbenga Akinnagbe) the controversial clip to the controversial first single off of the controversial album formerly known as “Nigger” is sure to have editors up at BET and MTV on the edge of their seats. Cordero borrowed from the theme first explored in Spike Lee‘s 25th Hour, positioning Nas in front of a mirror a la Ed Norton where he goes in on himself, painting everyone as NIGGERS with one fell swoosh. The cinematic effects were captivating and the hanging scene will have viewers gasping in disbelief.

The most compelling part of the video for me was the acappella in the beginning which summed up in a few bars what Nas’ has dedicated an entire album to. Afterwards there was a Q&A segment where Nas alluded to “Civil Rights” leaders who are out-of-touch with the younger element that are swiftly coming up beneath them but don’t pledge allegiance to the same ideals. He also strengthened the allegation made last week about Rev Al and others shaking down companies for “hush” money at the threat of protest. For the sake of rebelling against these elitist negroes and for relevance as an artist who must challenge himself to prove his own worth to himself, Nas said he is committing what amounts to “career-suicide” with this album, which he said will stand as “untitled” in protest of the politics that made him rename it from “Nigger.” Oh yeah, memorable moment of the night? When some genius asked Nas whom did he think did “Blacks” worst, George Bush or Dick Nixon (PAUSE)! Yeah, instead of saying “Rich” or “Richard” he invoked “Dick” into the convo…boy this industry gets weirder by the event.

  1. I love it. If they can make a movie about racial problems, then why can’t a artist make a soundtract about the same thing… “Music is the weapon of the future” Its not about making money, its about making a change.
