No sooner than coming home after attending a lecture about ‘symbol literacy’ do I log online and run into this image gracing the cover of the current New Yorker magazine. Titled Politics of Fear, the cartoon features Barack properly adorned in all of his rumored Muslim glory and fist-pumping with a pro-black caricature of Michelle Obama in the middle of the Oval Office with a picture of Osama Bin Laden on the wall, and a flag burning in the fireplace, depicting him as the Sum Total of All Fears: a militant undercover Muslim embarking on a historic first term as America’s first “Black” president, and we all know white America is in Fear of a Black Planet, let alone the prospect of being duped by its leader. So here is a compilation of all those fears, a visual sigil if you will.
The artist, who is being condemned for his depiction, released this statement:
I think the idea that the Obamas are branded as unpatriotic [let alone as terrorists] in certain sectors is preposterous. It seemed to me that depicting the concept would show it as the fear-mongering ridiculousness that it is.
