Air Jordan Force XIII (AJF 13)

via USDA2DAY

It was only a matter of time. The Air Jordan Dub Zero got the hybrid ball rolling and the Six (6) Rings focused solely on the kicks MJ rocked whilst marching toward the Larry O’Brien Trophy. In between, a whole line of hybrids mashing various Air Jordans into the Air Force 1 emerged as the Air Jordan Force series. Both the Dub Zero and Six Rings featured the Air Jordan XIII’s triangular side panels and that model is finally being ‘Forced’.

The Air Jordan Force XIII (AJF13) appears here in early artists renderings, having yet to emerge in sample form. AJ fans will recognize them as the regular season home colourway, the Flint Grey All Star do-up that graced the latest Six Rings that released today and the playoff palette worn in the 1998 tourney’s road games. All three feature the aforementioned golf ball-inspired side panels and two of the three have dimpled straps. Other notable design elements include the outer heel hologram inserts

A ‘Nike Air’ logo on the soft elastic upper heel and a two-toned AF1 sole divided by the pod-like design on the AJXIII bring the design together. Stick with Sneaker News and we’ll keep you up to date with the latest pictures and release info.

Brazil builds walls around Rio de Janeiro slums

via Reuters

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 28 (Reuters) – The government of Rio de Janeiro is building concrete walls to prevent sprawling slums from spreading farther into the picturesque hills of this world-famous tourist destination, an official said on Saturday.

Construction has begun in two favelas, or shantytowns, in the southern districts of Rio de Janeiro, a government spokeswoman told Reuters. One of the two is Morro Dona Marta, which police occupied in November to control crime and violence caused mostly by rival drug gangs.

Officials say the wall is to protect the remaining native forest but critics fear the move could be seen as discriminatory and become a blemish symbolizing Brazil’s deep divisions between rich and poor.

“There is no discrimination. On the contrary, we are building houses for them elsewhere and improving their lives,” Tania Lazzoli, spokeswoman for the secretary of public works at the state government, told Reuters.

By year-end the Rio de Janeiro state government wants to build almost 7 miles (11 km) of walls to contain 19 communities. It will spend 40 million reais ($17.6 million) and have to relocate 550 houses, Lazzoli said.

“The objective is to contain the spread of the communities and protect the forest,” Lazzoli said. “There are many houses in high risk areas.” Continue reading

Obama Brings Flush Times for Black News Media

via NY Times

WASHINGTON — For the nation’s black magazines, newspapers, and television and radio stations, the arrival of the Obama administration has ushered in an era of unprecedented access to the White House.obama_ebony

President Obama gave Black Enterprise magazine his first print interview and gave a black talk show host one of his first radio interviews. This month, he invited 50 black newspaper publishers to meet with him at the White House. And at his news conference Tuesday, he skipped over several prominent newspapers and newsmagazines to call on Kevin Chappell, a senior editor at Ebony magazine.

It was the first time an Ebony reporter had been invited to question a president at a prime-time news conference.

“We have, at last, an equal seat at the table,” said Bryan Monroe, the vice president and editorial director of Ebony and Jet magazines. “We’re not going to get everything we need. But now we definitely can be heard.” Continue reading

Entertainment marketing titan Stoute, who was instrumental in landing Brown the Wrigley’s deal, insists he can salvage his tattered career and be just as successful as Kobe Bryant.chrisbrown2_tzirel

Singer Chris Brown can repair the damage caused to his career by his fight with ex-girlfriend Rihanna, just like basketball star Kobe Bryant bounced back after his 2003 sexual assault scandal, according to marketing mogul Steve Stoute.

The “Kiss Kiss” hitmaker is facing almost five years in jail in relation to an February 8 incident which reportedly left Rihanna battered and bruised.

Brown’s career has taken a knock since the headline-grabbing altercation, with bosses at gum firm Wrigleys and America’s National Dairy Council pulling promotional campaigns featuring the star, while executives at several radio stations have removed his songs from their playlists after receiving complaints from listeners.

[video] T.I.’s Post Sentencing Press Conference & Performance w/B.o.B. @ The Loft

seen @ nahright

Clifford holds a press conference to announce he’s been sentenced to a bullet and a day.  He speaks skillfully on the transformation this ordeal has put him through, and acknowledges the new found “assignment” that mentoring and becoming a force of change has instilled in him.  I can’t wait to see how much of this wisdom will make it’s way to wax, the children deserve to be exposed to an alternative.

This is easily one of the hardest working dudes in the game.  After getting slugged with a bullet and a day, T.I. doesn’t miss a beat and joins B.o.B. onstage to offer a muffled freestyle (it sounded slick!).  Someone please tell B.o.B. you don’t cuff the mic while spitting.  I heard it from Chuck D himself, the number one problem plaguing up and coming performers is that they haven’t learned in order to be heard clearly, don’t cone the damn MICROPHONE!!

OMG! Woman Claims to Be 130 Years Old

(March 28) – A Kazakhstan woman celebrated her birthday Friday, and her family claims it was quite the milestone: they say she is 130 years old.
Sahan Dosova’s passport and identity card show her date of birth as March 27, 1879, but she does not have a birth certificate because they didn’t exist back when she said she was born.oldest_woman
If she is 130, Dosova would shatter the record for world’s oldest person. A Frenchwoman named Jeanne Calment is the oldest documented person in history, dying at 122 in 1997.
One of Dosova’s 35 grandchildren told the Associated Press that Dosova grew up an orphan, married and had 10 children, 7 of which died from cold and hunger. Her husband was killed over a bundle of wood, she said. Continue reading

T.I.’s “Road to Redemption” Begins..Sentenced to a Year and a Day

via CNN

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) — World-famous rap star T.I. was sentenced in Atlanta federal court Friday to one year and one day in prison and ordered to pay a $100,300 fine on weapons charges related to purchasing machine guns and silencers.ti

In that time, he mentored at-risk students at 58 schools, 12 Boys & Girls Clubs, nine churches and many other nonprofit organizations, according to court documents.

Meanwhile, T.I., 28, has released his sixth CD, “Paper Trail,” which has sold close to 2 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The multiplatinum rapper also has starred in the MTV reality show, “T.I.’s Road to Redemption: 45 Days to Go,” which chronicles his efforts to shave years off his sentence by completing his community service. The show features him talking to students and community groups “about how to avoid the trouble he now finds himself in,” according to the network’s Web site.

“It’s been rewarding in the sense that it takes my mind off my own personal circumstances when I focus the attention on helping others,” he said about his time spent doing community service. “And that way, I’ve definitely been able to appreciate the ability to turn my negative part of my life into a positive.”

Harris recently talked to CNN about learning from his mistakes.

“You shouldn’t take the things that I’ve gone through and the negative parts of my life and admire me for that,” Harris said. “If anything, admire me for how I’ve accepted responsibility for the part I’ve played in placing myself in these situations and what I’ve done to recover from it.” Video Watch the rapper’s interview with CNN’s T.J. [video] HUSSLE IN THE HOUSE RMX- Nipsey Hussle feat Jay Rock & Maino

While Hip Hop’s bloggerati descended to the Lone Star State to cover the closest thing that we have to Woodstock these days, the biggest story in Hip Hop made a pit stop in New York.  Nipsey Hussle rolled into town on the GAME’s LAX tour.  Now, just in case the irony was lost on you, here you have a Rolling 60 Crip on tour with two devout Bloods, The Game & Jay-Rock.  Not only has the South Central wordsmith been defying logic and shattering stereotypes but he happens to be spitting unprecedented FIRE.  This is the latest offering, the remix to the critically acclaimed “HUSSLE IN THE HOUSE.” Nipsey teams up with Jay-Rock and Brooklyn’s own Maino.  If you listen to the outdated pundits he’s not suppose to be collabin’ with either one of these dudes, but as Nip continues to prove there is a new movement emerging out the West.  Tell us what you think about this track.

Wesley Snipes A Flight Risk?

wesley_snipes_01

via The Smoking Gun

MARCH 25–Arguing that convicted tax cheat Wesley Snipes recently violated terms of his bail by attending the lavish “party of the decade” in Dubai, federal prosecutors are opposing the actor’s request to travel to Africa and Europe to film movies.

In a March 24 U.S. District Court filing, government lawyers argue that Snipes, 46, made an “unauthorized” trip last November to the United Arab Emirates for the star-studded opening of the $1.5 billion Atlantis, The Palm Hotel. As a result of the Dubai trip, a federal judge in Florida ordered Snipes to surrender his passport. Prosecutors apparently only learned of Snipes’s travel to Dubai when paparazzi photos from the hotel opening were published (one such image, seen at right, was included as an exhibit to yesterday’s government filing, an excerpt of which you’ll find below).

Snipes was sentenced last year to three years in prison following his conviction on three misdemeanor tax charges. He is free on bail while appealing his conviction. Last week he sought permission to travel to Italy for 14 weeks to film “Game of Death.” He also wants to spend two weeks in Namibia for reshoots on “Gallowwalker.” In opposing Snipes’s travel requests, federal prosecutors also noted that Namibia “has become known as a haven for international fugitives,” and cited a recent New York Times story titled “Tips for the Sophisticated Fugitive.”

Book: Whitney Houston Paid 400k Ransom

whitney_houston_1

via Wendynista

Are you prepared for some drama!

According to a new book, Whitney Houston paid $400,000 to save then-husband Bobby Brown’s life after he was held for ransom by a murderous New York gang.

The author, ex-convict David Collins, was a member of the gang – known as The Preacher Crew. And in an exclusive interview, Collins told The Enquirer how poor Bobby wound up naked and hog-tied at a gang hideout.

“It was April 1993. Whitney’s movie The Bodyguard and the movie’s album were big hits,” said Collins, whose book “Preacher of the Streets” tells the inside story of the gang and Brown’s kidnapping.

According to Collins, Bobby got about $25,000 worth of cocaine from a dealer in New Jersey, where Bobby and Whitney lived – and told the dealer he’d pay him later. But soon the drug dealer was fuming because Bobby couldn’t be reached. (Sounds familiar and not far-fetched.)

The dealer, Luke, was on a visit to Atlantic City when he bumped into a friend, Clarence Heatley, a 6-foot-7, 260-pound mountain of evil who was kingpin of the notorious Preacher Crew gang.

Heatley – whose fiery oratory earned him the nickname “Preacher” – dealt his poison in Harlem and the Bronx.

Torture was the gang’s trademark. Members would slice off body parts of rival dealers before killing them. When Preacher met Luke in Atlantic City, Luke mentioned that Bobby Brown owed him about $25,000 and was ducking him.

“Preacher came up with a plan to make himself a lot more than $25,000,” Collins said. “He paid Luke the money Bobby owed and told Luke, ‘His debt is now my problem.'”

So, Simon Cowell is the least of Bobby Brown’s worries.

[video] Augmented Reality by Hitlab

I can’t honestly say I know what is going to happen in the near future, let alone on Dec. 21, 2012 but by the looks of things the next wave of technology looks super duper cool.  If only things would stabilize and somehow we can trickle trillions into the coffers of the consumers there is loads of great tech stuff to snatch up.  Saw this over on Facebook via my good friend Sonya Alexander.

Augmented reality (AR) is a field of computer research which deals with the combination of real world and computer generated data.

Rihanna, who has been laying low since her Grammy-weekend blowup with, and alleged assault by, Chris Brown, has a new gun tattooed on her body.

Rihanna, who also has “Shhh” tattooed on a finger, a Maori design on her right hand and stars behind her ear (that match stars behind Brown’s ear) brought tattoo artist Bang Bang out to LA for her latest ink.
He posted some photos and commentary on his MySpace page, where he wrote that she flew him to LA for one day and put him up at the Roosevelt so he could add to her body art.

Under the first photo, with the guns drawn on each shoulder as seen below, Bang Bang writes, “i really wanted to put it here… she loved em.. .but, cover girl wouldnt have liked it much… and they pay the bills!”

Nubia:Lost civilisation of Egypt

nubia_temples

via BBC

The Sun Temple at Abu Simbel is a popular tourist attraction which has featured in well-known films like Death on the Nile and The Mummy Returns but had it been left where Ramses II built it 15 centuries ago, it would now be under water.

Fifty years ago this year Egypt and Sudan asked for international help to save ancient sites threatened by the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

“It was going to submerge all the area of Nubia – monuments, people, the landscape, everything,” says Costanza de Simone from the United Nations’ culture agency, Unesco.

“So the two governments launched an appeal to Unesco.

“The work brought people from all over the world into Nubia, people with different backgrounds: archaeologists, engineers and geologists. They had to invent new methods and techniques.

“It changed the vision of how to preserve cultural heritage.”

Moving the statues at Abu Simbel
The Abu Simbel temple was cut up and moved between 1964 and 1968

Over two decades the race to carry out large-scale excavations uncovered thousands of artefacts and huge monuments were carefully cut into blocks and dismantled before being rebuilt in new locations.

The most famous are the temples of Abu Simbel and Philae.

“The Nubia campaign was very important,” says the head of the Egyptian supreme Council of Antiquities, Zahi Hawass.

“It was the first time you saw such international cooperation. Continue reading

Nintendo Wii sales hit 50 million

nintendo_wii

via BBC

Global sales of Nintendo’s Wii console have passed 50 million, the company’s boss Satoru Iwata has said.

The Wii is now the fastest-selling games console in history, surpassing the PlayStation 2.

Mr Iwata also said that Nintendo’s handheld DS console had shipped 100m units around the world.

“Almost no one expected them to reach the current level of mainstream acceptance. It’s even beyond what we possibly hoped for,” Mr Iwata said.

“The market has expanded as video games have been accepted by more consumers than ever before,” the Nintendo president, told the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

“It’s a cliche but it’s not just the 18-year-old kid, it’s the mom on the train, it’s the high-school girl after she’s done with her homework, everyone plays games. “

‘Outside the box’

“The Wii and DS have made games more accessible,” Tameka Kee of PaidContent.org told BBC News

Jay Lauffer from Blizzard Entertainment was impressed by the figures and put it down to Nintendo’s approach.

“I imagine its successful because Nintendo seems to be shifting what is kind of a traditional sit-down environment to getting people up and moving.”

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata

Iwata said he wanted Wii products to provide increased enthusiasm

Remy Lavoie, a programmer with DTI Software said: “If Nintendo has such a big share of the market it’s pretty impressive.

“They are thinking outside the box and its clearly paying off.”

To create some excitement among developers, Mr Iwata unveiled some upgrades for the Wii which included a much-hoped-for new storage system. Continue reading

Pioneering historian John Hope Franklin dies at 94

via Google

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — John Hope Franklin, a towering scholar and pioneer of African-American studies who wrote the seminal text on the black experience in the U.S. and worked on the landmark Supreme Court case that outlawed public school segregation, died Wednesday. He was 94.Obit Franklin

David Jarmul, a spokesman at Duke University, where Franklin taught for a decade and was professor emeritus of history, said he died of congestive heart failure at the school’s hospital in Durham.

Born and raised in an all-black community in Oklahoma where he was often subjected to humiliating racism, Franklin was later instrumental in bringing down the legal and historical validations of such a world.

As an author, his book “From Slavery to Freedom” was a landmark integration of black history into American history that remains relevant more than 60 years after being published. As a scholar, his research helped Thurgood Marshall and his team at the NAACP win Brown v. Board of Education, the 1954 case that barred the doctrine of “separate but equal” in the nation’s public schools. Continue reading

Online Gaming can make Consoles Obsolete

onlive_live

via Yahoo

What if you could stream top-end games to your TV, just like a Youtube video that you can control? You’d never need to buy a console again.

That’s the future envisaged by Palo Alto startup OnLive, which plans to launch a groundbreaking gaming service this winter. OnLive will supply players with a small set-top box, not much bigger than a Nintendo DS, which will plug into your TV and your home broadband connection. From there, you can start playing games just like those on the Xbox 360, PS3 or PC — but with no install time, no waiting for downloads, and no need for big, noisy, expensive consoles cluttering up your living room. OnLive’s service can be continually upgraded, too, so you’ll never be stuck with obsolete hardware again. online_live21

Skeptical? So were we, until we actually sat down and played with an OnLive box last week. Even a blisteringly fast racer like Burnout Paradise was totally playable over the service, and top-spec shooter Crysis: Warhead — which normally requires an expensive gaming PC — ran excellently too. It’s all rolled together with a slick interface that requires just a few button-presses to get playing. Continue reading

Dead center, as you’ve cerainly noticed, is a book titled Monkeys.

Get it? Somebody thinks that the Obamas are monkeys. (Maybe it was Tammy Bruce?)

According to The Defenders Online, which is produced by the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF), B&N was vastly apologetic when the arrangement was pointed out, and rushed to clarify the controversy.

“This was not a company driven decision,” Edgar Chang, the store manager, said in an interview with TheDefendersOnline. “We are not sure how the book got in the window, but we believe it was put there by a customer who didn’t like the fact that Obama won the election.” Continue reading

Michael Vick Released from Federal Prison..but Whereabouts Unknown

mvick

via Fanhouse

RICHMOND, Va. -Suspended NFL star Michael Vick has left a federal lockup in Kansas, apparently bound for Virginia to appear at a bankruptcy hearing next week.

The U.S. Bureau of Prisons Web site showed Wednesday that Vick was no longer at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan. It listed his status as “in transit.” It was not clear when he left, or where he was. But two weeks ago, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank Santoro demanded that Vick to testify at an April 2 hearing in Newport News about whether his Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan should be confirmed.

Another judge issued a court order directing federal marshals to bring the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback to Virginia for the hearing. Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Victoria Joseph said bureau policy prohibits disclosure of the prisoner’s destination until after he arrives.

Vick’s attorneys did not immediately return phone messages left by The Associated Press. Vick is serving 23 months for bankrolling a dogfighting conspiracy. He is eligible to move into home confinement no earlier than May 21 and is scheduled to be released from custody on July 20. Continue reading

[video] Oakland Police Massacre: A Desperate Act to Avoid Going Back to Prison

Vodpod videos no longer available.

via AlterNet

Editor’s Note: The killing of four police officers in Oakland shows the desperation of an ex-felon. Lovelle Mixon was trying to avoid going back to jail and at the same time unable to find any employment that would give him a second chance. It’s a story repeated all over America, even if it does not always end in a killing spree as it did in Oakland.

A general consensus is that it was a deadly mix of panic, rage, and frustration that caused Lovelle Mixon to snap. His shocking murderous rampage left four Oakland police officers dead and a city and police agencies searching its soul about what went so terribly wrong. Though Mixon’s killing spree is a horrible aberration, his plight as an
unemployed ex-felon isn’t. There are tens of thousands like him on America’s streets.

In 2007, the National Institute of Justice found that 60 percent of ex-felon offenders remain unemployed a year after their release. Other studies have shown that upwards of 30 percent of felon releases live in homeless shelters because of their inability to find housing. And those are the lucky ones. Many camp out on the streets.

A significant number of them suffer from drug, alcohol and mental health challenges, and lack education or any marketable skills. More than 70 percent of all U.S. prisoners are literate at only the two lowest grade levels. Nearly 60 percent of violent felons are repeat offenders. They are a menace to themselves and, as the nation saw with Mixon, to others. In some cases, they can be set off by any real or perceived slight, insult, or simply lash out from bitter rage. Mixon was one and he made four Oakland police officers victims and left a terrible trail of grieving and distraught families and a shell-shocked city and police department. Continue reading

Kanye Plans to Tour this Fall

Kanye West credits his dad for his risk-taking attitude.

“I like the challenge of having to win people over with a new concept,” West said in a recent interview. “My father (Ray West) was a salesman. And I saw him have to talk people into things and expose people to new ideas all the time. And I like that. What’s the point if you’re not presenting something new to people, that people might not be ready for, and exposing people to new ideas?”

Expect new theatrical ideas when West takes to the road this summer. West will launch a European tour featuring his latest album, “808s & Heartbreak,” in July and expects the tour to hit the United States by fall.

Speaking on the set of a recent video shoot for his friend 88-Keys’ “Stay Up (Viagra),” West said he was excited to find new ways to blend his songs together.

“Being on stage, it’s the glory,” West said.

The producer-turned-rapper-turned-singer has consulted with many of the same people who helped inspire staging for his last set of shows, the “Glow in the Dark Tour.” They include filmmaker Spike Jonze, who directed West’s upcoming “See You In My Nightmares” video, and The Jim Henson Company. David Banner Talks Iraq War Reality, “There Have Been Multiple Thousands Of Suicides”

banner

via SOHH

David Banner recently discussed the effects of the Iraq war, speaking on the number of soldier suicides.

The rapper-turned-actor said recently spending time overseas made him realize the seriousness of war.

“That experience changed my life,” Banner said in an interview. “There are troops who are experiencing situations we couldn’t imagine…Things are really hard over there and the Bush Administration really tried to hide the real number of suicides in the Iraq War. There have been multiple thousands of suicides. And I don’t personally agree with the war, but that has nothing to do with supporting the people who are putting their life on the line, or dying over there or fighting that war. They feel like people have forgotten about them.” (Hip Hop DX)

Banner was selected by the United States Organizations (USO) earlier this year to perform for troops in the Persian Gulf in 2009.

The performances are part of a week-long USO/Armed Forces Entertainment tour, in which Banner will visit several military posts. “There’s nothing I enjoy more than giving back and expressing my thanks to those serving our nation,” Banner said in the release. “I am honored to travel with the USO and feel privileged to do what I do everyday. Regardless of your political affiliation or viewpoint on the war, our soldiers work hard and have paved the way to where we are today.” (The Clarion-Ledger) Continue reading

T-Pain Hit W/ $5 Million Lawsuit, Offers “Death Threat” Defense

tpain

via SOHH

T-Pain has received a $5 million breach of contract lawsuit after kidnapping and death threats caused him to miss a concert last month in Guyana.

Pain was also paid $75,000 in advance according to the lawsuit filed Monday (March 23) in Broward Circut Court.

Hits Jams, the Georgetown-based concert producer and promoter, along with three of its officers, also sued T-Pain’s Nappy Boy Touring and Chase Entertainment of Fort Lauderdale. T-Pain was to headline the Republic Day event on Feb. 23. Hits and Jams provided more than a dozen airline tickets for T-Pain and his entourage, including seven in first class. The contract also called for: a ”four-star hotel or better” with Cartoon Network and 24-hour room service; a stadium dressing room with a private bathroom; and bottles of Grey Goose, Gran Patrón Platinum and Hennessy, and Gatorade and herbal tea. (Miami Herald)

Chase Entertainment rep David Abram claims he offered to return the $75,000 because death threats forced the singer to cancel his performance.

”It was a legitimate security threat.” Chase, T-Pain’s management company, did not want to put the artist in ”harm’s way,” Abram said in a statement. ”We feel horrible about not being able to play the concert…We are going to do what needs to be done to make this right with the promoters. They’re a good company. We’re a good company.” (Six Shot) Continue reading

The Harlem-bred rapper’s decision was made Tuesday in Manhattan Court, New York.

Jones has rejected a plea deal that would have required 10 days of community service for allegedly attacking a rival recording artist’s friend. Jones, 32, was charged with misdemeanor assault after a fight with Javon Smith inside a Louis Vuitton store on East 57th Street. Smith was with R&B singer-rapper Ne-Yo. Defense lawyer Scott Leemon called the case “a setup for a civil lawsuit” and payday for Javon Smith. Leemon says witnesses reported Jones did not start the fight and is innocent. (Associated Press)

He previously appeared in court last month pleading not guilty on the assault charge.

Jones pleaded not guilty on Wednesday (February 4). “I’m trying to stay away from this building,” quipped the “Pop Champagne” rapper as he emerged from Manhattan Criminal Court after being arraigned. He downplayed the misdemeanor assault charge stemming from the Dec. 22 fisticuffs with Jayvon Smith. “It’s what you call an expensive inconvenience,” said Jones, wrapping an arm around his lawyer, Scott Leemon. [video] Pharrell busts out the McDonalds song…in a McDonalds

These Negroes still do McDonald’s?

Pharrell Williams x McDonalds. Talk about some free publicity. Pharrell was so desperate for a McDonalds in a Paris airport to open early that he busts out in song and dance to convince the cashiers to open. Too bad he just ends up scaring them. McDonalds…time for you to ride the PR machine and give Skateboard P a lifetime supply of Big Macs.

Indonesian Promoter to Sue N.E.R.D. after No-Show

An Indonesian promoter threatened Tuesday to sue the management of US hip-hop group N.E.R.D. for cancelling a show in Jakarta after they ran into trouble with the law in neighbouring Malaysia.

N.E.R.D. were due to play in the Indonesian capital on Sunday but called off the gig at the last minute over fears of similar trouble with Indonesian police, local promoters Java Festival Production said in a statement.

The trio was “depressed” by their treatment in Malaysia, where they were questioned by authorities after a performance in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

Malaysia’s Bernama news agency reported Monday that immigration department officials took statements from the group as they had not received official permission to perform there.

“We are going to file a lawsuit against N.E.R.D.’s management for their unilateral decision to cancel,” Java Festival Production spokesman Rezanda Tamaputra told AFP. Continue reading

The End of the Global War on Terror

The end of the Global War on Terror — or at least the use of that phrase — has been codified at the Pentagon. Reports that the phrase was being retired have been circulating for some time amongst senior administration officials, and this morning speechwriters and other staff were notified via this e-mail to use “Overseas Contingency Operation” instead.

“Recently, in a LtGen [John] Bergman, USMC, statement for the 25 March [congressional] hearing, OMB required that the following change be made before going to the Hill,” Dave Riedel, of the Office of Security Review, wrote in an e-mail.

“OMB says: ‘This Administration prefers to avoid using the term “Long War” or “Global War on Terror” [GWOT]. Please use “Overseas Contingency Operation.'”

Riedel asked recipients to “Please pass on to your speech writers and try to catch this change before the statements make it to OMB.”

An OMB spokesman took issue with the interpretation of OMB’s wishes. “There was no memo, no guidance,” said Kenneth Baer. “This is the opinion of a career civil servant.”

Referring to the phrase “global war on terror,” Baer said, “I have no reason to believe that would be stricken” from Hill testimony. Continue reading
