Special Report: Where is the $420 Billion Dollars Given to Black Churches?

I would like to commend the people over at Livesteez for doing this very important story because it needs to be addressed in the worst way. Where has all the money gone given to Black Churches since forever?

This is not a shot at churches who do good work in the community this is aimed those Pastors who have private jets and vacation in St. Tropez with Bey-Z. Check out an excerpt from their investigative story and make sure you visit their site and give some feedback.

LiveSteez research shows that Black churches, in aggregate, have collected more than $420 billion in tithes and donations since 1980. With a Senate investigation into the finances of several mega churches

underway, the “Prosperity Movement” has been the target of mounting criticism from inside and outside the Black Church. Specifically, the affluent ministries of The Reverend Creflo Dollar, Bishop Eddie Long

and others have drawn the attention – and ire – of some clergy and laypeople alike.

Researcher Henry E. Felder’s study of Blacks’ donation habits demonstrated per capita spending of $508 per year in 2009 dollars. Another source, Tyler Media Services, estimated that Black Church revenue

approached $17 billion in 2006.

One church, the Reverend Dollar’s World Changers, reported $69 million in 2006 income, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Mainstream politicians and Black community leaders are demanding a better accounting of the “return on investment” offered by churches to the communities that fund them. Meanwhile, legions of faithful

churchgoers defend their pastors and accuse their detractors of applying a double standard that ignores the largesse of wealthy, white televangelists, while underplaying the economic development and social service functions provided by the Black Church.

“The church has gotten caught up in materialism and greed, a lifestyle. Many ministers today want to live like celebrities and they want to be treated like celebrities. In other words, instead of the church standing with the community, the church has become self-serving. It has strayed away from its mission” according to Dr.Love Henry Whelchel, professor of church history at The Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta.

  1. and my pastor tithes a “graduated tithe” of 40% of his income. God doesn’t cut you off if you don’t tithe that is ridiculous. You give because you want to and if your not doing it for the right reasons God knows that anyway..do you really think he will honor something like that? Any tithe or offering is a CHOICE! Make them wisely and get over it. Yes money is a defense and why should god’s people be defenseless in this world. WHY? Just answer that for me please…

  2. To be honest with you, when you go to these large churches they don’t beg for offerings. they pass the plate once and it’s over nothing is forced on anybody. It’s the same support we give Lil Wayne to teach us how sip syrup and get high on albums for $15. Rap music is a “ministry”. We pay to hear that bullsh*t so why not give the church an offering when you are hearing what you like to hear and are uplifted. I defend my Pastor who is not Creflo Dollar but is one of his good friends and he goes to 10 countries and has active missions in each one..All of the church accounting is public record for members to view. Not to mention he uses the plane to go oversees each month to feed and clothe people so I say i would give him five bucks over any rappers drug habit any day. Remember the number of members grew because obviously people felt something good from the messages. No one drags people to a specific church. They go willingly and make a choice to stay. If there are a 2,500 members and everybody gives 5 dollars each service of course they will make more money than a store front..DUH! Also you idiots fail to realize that people have become prosperous and wealthy through the financial planning services and other teaching at this ministry has made them humble, focused, and successful in life and they are grateful. Get over it. I also think that you guys don’t understand what these ministries give back to the community..as in tangible things. My pastor owns a mall where our church services are held and he provides jobs, banking services, financial planning, youth activities, a college, etc. He makes his salary available to the public BUT if others wish to buy things for him so what..he gives away lots of money to lots of people. So with that said kick rocks, haters!

  3. This is for Suzanne who wrote on August 22nd, 2009: I admire your zeal for God and your love for Christ. I agree with the fact that God is not looking at a money-for-miracle exchange. However, my concern with your recent comment was when you specifically stated ” According to Galatians 3:13 Christ has redeemed us from curses of the law and was made a curse for us therefore people should use their brains and know that this cancels out that Old Testament curse in Malachi 3!” I see that you are a person of the Word. In the Word (Matthew 5:17), it says that He has not come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it. When Christ sacrificed Himself for us, it was so that He would be the ultimate sacrifice instead of offering animals as they did in the days of the Law. Because He did so, we can offer our hearts instead of having to pay physically or with animals for sins (see Psalm 51:16, 17). His sacrifice opened the door for relationship. Now, for the money issue, the Word does say that the LOVE of money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10) but it also says that money is the answer to all things and is a defense (meaning things of the natural, according to Ecclesiastes 7:12 and 10:19). I see where you come from with the OLD order of the law with the priest getting the tithe; however, preisthood was their job (they had no income except from the people Numbers 18:23-31), and God for that time with the children of Israel had them receive tithe. However, even the preist were required to give tithe ( A tithe is an offering we owe unto the Lord (which is SUPPOSED to go to those things of GOD) to take care of the household of faith aka the church (notice, I did not say the Pastor’s wallet). That is where Malachi 3 (specifically verses 10 and 11) is coming from. We take care of GOD’s house first, and it helps to guarantee the protection of our own blessings so that Haggai 1:4-7 does not happen because of our neglect. Where it goes wrong is when leadership who are NOT after God’s heart uses the money for the wrong reasons and make it purely a business (Matthew 21:12-13). So please don’t blame His Word (He remains the same;Hebrews 13:8 and His Word is inspired by Him; 2 Timothy 3:16). Blame those who get it twisted!

  4. Jesus said ask in his name. Seek him and you will find him. Knock and he will open the door all of this was for free. I never read where he charged anybody for help or miracles!

  5. 1 Corinthians 1:20
“Our promises from God in Christ is Yes and Amen”

In the Gospel of Matthew it states that we can ask for any need in Jesus name if we are abiding in Him.
No where is it written that first God will check your tithing record before He answers. You will never find Jesus charging anyone for a healing or Miracle. We have a New Covenant in Jesus based on faith in Him. Your faith and focus should be in Him and not your tithing works. The Jewish Old Testament Tithe was like a tax payment for the Leviticus Priest and poor and it was food they were tithing not silver or gold coins. After Jesus died the old laws were replaced by grace not works. Our right-standing and favor comes by way of faith in his works so any giving is because a true child of God should have the Holy Spirit guiding them in every area of our lives. There is no way that the Lord will lie. According to Galatians 3:13 Christ has redeemed us from curses of the law and was made a curse for us therefore people should use their brains and know that this cancels out that Old Testament curse in Malachi 3!

  6. There is a great book by Russell E. Kelly named Should the Church teach Tithing. He explores this subject in great detail using the word to back up the facts. I highly recommend reading it.

  7. There is so much spiritual abuse over how they collect the tithes
(ten percent of gross). It is now part of many Mission statements listed right there with how to confess the Lord as your Savior is usually the tithe requirement. You cannot serve in most Churches unless they check your tithe records to see if you faithfully tithe. I personally have heard Pastors tell people even if you are on welfare you still tithe because you can’t afford not to. Others said they will check your tithe records if you call the Church for help cause why help people that God has cursed (for not paying tithes they have robbed God). The ones really robbing God or the ones teaching this abolished at the cross law. Giving credit to any other works is robbing the Lord of the honor and glory due him from his suffering and payment on that cross. Our favor rest in his finished work. Didn’t he say it is finished and paid in full?

  8. They scare you into paying tithes twisting the scriptures and scaring you half to death that you will be cursed & quoting that Old Testament Malachi 3{verses 3-7). These ordinances and laws were addressed given to Jewish people. Non-Jews have been grafted into the New Covenant which is by GRACE.
At the Cross of Christ, the Lord gave us Believers all the blessings we need and then some for free.

Romans 8:31-32 “Who can bring a charge against Gods elect people, since He did not spare His one and only Son, won’t He now with Him (Jesus) freely give us all things?” It’s right there in your New Testament portion of your the Bible folks, so the next time they start trying to brainwash you with that Malachi 3 curse in the Old Testament to scare you into paying tithes, meditate on that Scripture that God freely gives us all things! Now we can give as we decide what is right in our own hearts not out of pressure or duty but God loves a cheerful giver.2nd Corinthian 9:7 Apostle Paul used the word Giver not tithe payer.

  9. Jesus said the greatest commandments was to love the Lord your God with all of your mind, heart and soul and the second greatest is the love your neighbor like (you love)yourself. He said this fulfilled the whole law and the laws from the Prophets. Yet many Churches want to make the greatest commandment “Pay your tithes to be right with God” what a bunch of crap!

  10. “He (Christ) abolished the ordinances that was against us, taking it out of the way and nailing it to his cross” Col.2:14

Ephesians 2:15 He abolished the Jewish law with its commandment and rules, in order to create out of two races one new people in Union with himself.” Jesus fulfilled the law in our place all six hundred and 13 of them. Paying the tithe (which was food from crops was not money) is only one. If you keep this Old Testament law are you keeping the other ones also??? Our position in God is why we are highly favored and blessed. It is all based on what the finished works at the Cross. Gentiles were grafted into the New Covenant and were never ever given the Jewish tithe law as a requirement. Read your New Testament people. You also cannot be cursed. For Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the Law Gal. 3:14

  11. It nice that we are looking into a matter that has grieved the fathers heart for so long, and to have a charities commission of some sort is much needed. As for the title it has failed in what it’s intent (Black churches are not the only ones the whole prosperity movement was pioneered by many people that are not black) but the content of holding black churches accountable such as the one mentioned above is long over due.

  12. So many Bible Teachers (black & white) are incorrectly teaching that Christians must still pay God the tithe as commanded in the Old Testament. Some go beyond the tithe and teach the more money you give the more you will reap from God. There is often no mention of what Jesus claimed is the greatest commandment loving him and others with all your might just pay that ten percent they say and be blessed regardless. The emphasis for the blessing is paying ten percent to please God and not be cursed. This is Spiritual abuse and a scam of the worst sort.
Any Christian reading the complete New Testament can figure out that Jesus did all the paying for favor and access to God.
The main theme throughout the New Testament is “Grace (Gods unearned/undeserved favor). Christians were never at any time commanded to keep Old Testament laws or customs to be in Covenant with God because of Grace by way of the Cross of Christ. Jesus came to perfectly fulfill the law and paid all fines for those that believe in Him and receive Him. Therefore, only Jesus should get the praise. He was cursed in our place according to Galatians chapter 3 verse 13. If Church-goers are being duped into paying large sums of money they are willing participants for not investigating the real facts for themselves.

  13. If people are blindly trusting and following any Mega Church leader or Christian Celebrity as if they are beyond failure and mistakes then they deserve what the deception that they will get. If they learned anything from their Bibles they’d discover Kings and leaders repeatedly made mistakes or had numerous flaws. Only God is perfect and good to perfection! Jesus came and paid it all on the Cross in full for us who believe that. It’s pathetic that so many are teaching that Christians must keep paying paying & paying to please and appease God. Jesus said after He suffered on the Cross, just before he breathed his last “paid in full”! I don’t know what else that could other than but what it is.
