A transgender father and daughter from the US have shared their remarkable journeys as they transition together.
Eric and Corey Maison, from Detroit, each struggled for years with their gender identities, unaware their loved one was also facing a battle of their own.
Corey, 15, told her parents she identified as a girl four years ago. Then last year, her mother Erica revealed she too would transition and live as Eric.
Corey and Eric’s relationship had changed from mother and son to father and daughter.
I wanted to make my parents proud of who I am, but I thought that they would not like me,” Corey told Tara Brown on 60 Minutes of her early childhood years.
Meanwhile, Eric said he always dreamed of living his life as a man and Corey’s brave decision to begin her transition inspired Eric to do the same.
Eric told 60 Minutes of the agony he felt as he wrestled with his gender identity.
“When I was younger I used to wish for cancer so I would have to get a mastectomy,” he told Brown, adding he “hated being pregnant”.
It was after watching a documentary on prominent transgender girl Jazz Jennings that Eric realised he wanted to transition.
“The first feeling was relief, the second was terror,” he said.
“Fear for what my future would hold, fear for how my family and children would, fear for what the rest of my life was going to look like.”
