[video] Talk to Al Jazeera – Akon: ‘America was never built for black people’

Must watch. Akon is stepping up plate and putting these African governments to shame who by way of white supremacy have left their people in the dark ages while Europeans and the Chinese suck the country of its resources.

Edit: Much props to the beautiful interviewer who didn’t give Akon any softballs during this chat and called him on various subjects including his lyrical content which many have deemed dehumanizing to women.

The Senegalese-American recording artist talks frankly about US race relations, “rebranding” Africa, and his music.
Akon talks to Al Jazeera about running his musical career as a business; his projects – both philanthropic and artistic; singing songs for peace and whether he thinks it can really make an impact; and being an African in the US.

Snoop reposts meme calling Bruce Jenner a ‘Science Project’

Snoop Dogg joined the ranks of public figures who’ve shared less-than-sensitive reactions to Caitlyn Jenner’s transition on social media, sharing a meme Wednesday (June 3) that compares the coverage of Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover with the coverage of Akon‘s charitable initiatives.

The image has a picture of Akon with the caption “Shout out to Akon! He is about to supply 60 million africans with solar power. Im really upset that this isn’t major news but that science project bruce jenner is #Society.” Snoop added: “News flash @Akon. Tune into ggn [his weekly online talk show] for some real news.”

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ J.R. Smith also shared the meme but has since deleted it.

Busta Putting Together Posse Cut to Address Legal Woes

busta crymes
Source: Nahright/MTV

In a recent interview with MTV, Busta Rhymes explains “Don’t Believe Them,” his second posse cut that he is in the process of putting together with Akon and T.I.

The record was inspired by the situation that transpired with T.I. right after the BET Hip-Hop Awards. My legal situations were current, and his legal situations were current, and Akon had his, you know, history of legal situations in the past. … We wanted people to — as bad as things might look for us sometimes — just know that it ain’t over until you say it’s over at the end of the day. ‘Cause nobody can really dictate what the outcome of your destiny, what your life is going to end up becoming, unless you let it happen that way.”

New T-Pain Album Due In Late September, Single With Lil Wayne..

via Billboard

I guess you thought you heard enough of T-Pain, considering he has basically been on heavy rotation for the last two years on virtually every single of every major label artist in the universe. Guess again, cause he will be back with a new album lead by a single by none other than Weezy F. Baby. More below:

T-Pain is eyeing a Sept. 30 release for his third album, “Thr33 Ringz,” which will be released by Konvict Muzik/Zomba. The first single, “Snap You Fingers” featuring Lil’ Wayne, is expected to hit radio next month.

According to a Zomba spokesperson, a video for “Snap Yo Fingers” is in the works and T-Pain is currently hard at work producing the new album with Akon.

This week’s Hot 100 chart boasts three songs featuring T-Pain, including Flo Rida’s breakout single “Low,” which sits at No. 16 after 27 weeks.

The R&B singer garnered five BET Awards nominations last week, including nods for best collaboration for his work with Chris Brown (“Kiss Kiss”), Kanye West (“Good Life”) and Flo Rida (“Low”).

“Epiphany,” T-Pain’s 2007 album, has sold 819,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The Lil Homie Plies Preps Sophomore Release

plies2.jpg

The Lil Homie Plies is striking while the iron is hot. According to an article on SOHH.com Plies is reading his sophomore release Definition of Real, after enjoying gold success with his debut CD The Real Testament.  Slated for a June 10 release Plies also spoke on the secrets to his formula.  He said he doesn’t rely on high priced producers to cook up tracks, instead he leans on his brothers production company The World Music Group.

“We got a lot of good producers under our umbrella,” he says. “At the end of the day if you’re not careful you can go through this business coming out with great records, great albums and walk away with nothing to show. So, I’m just trying to tighten up my business side of it.”

You can also forget any rapper guest appearances, like George Bush the Homie Plies prefers to go at it alone. He is sticking with his winning formula and going with a R&B crooner on the hook and this time around he snatched up Ne-Yo for his yet untitled lead single. “It’s all me on this album but I was able to work with a Ne-Yo who gave me that good radio side, that radio look.”In addition to him tightening the music business side up Plies is also venturing into reality TV and fashion. Based off his two-part single “Bust It Baby” which Plies describes as “the best sexual experience” this will be the name of the show as well as an all-female fashion line. There are currently three major networks bidding for the pepper hot show which received 200,000 hits for the casting call alone!  For more info on the Lil Homie Plies CLICK HERE

Governor of Georgia to Honor Atlanta Musicians

usga38364.jpeg

I guess its true what they say, membership has its privilege.  Apparently living in Atlanta has more perks than easy access to strip clubs.  The governor of Georgia, Sonny Perdue will be holding a ceremony on March 19 in Buckhead at the Governor’s Mansion where he will be honoring the Grammy nominees living in the Peach State.  Falling under that dubious distinction is Akon, Keyshia Cole, Outkast, Ne-Yo, T-Pain, Angie Stone, India.Arie, Gnarls Barkley and super producer DJ Toomp.  Toomp, a two-time Grammy winner just snagged another statue for the T-Pain helmed Kanye single, “Good Life.”  Talk about Southern Hospitality!  Can you imagine Elliot Spitzer laying honors on industry leading New Yorkers?  I didn’t think so.  For more on this story CLICK HERE.

Akon is all about a “Dolla”

dolla-single.jpg

Akon is definetly about a Dolla”. Of course we know the multi-platinum artist and producer is serious about his money, but he now has his eyes set on a new young artist named Dolla signed to his Konvict Music imprint. Meeting the 20 yr. old ATL native back in 2000 while he was part of the group the Rascals, Akon is now ready to introduce the part-time model to the masses.

With a single featuring none other than T-Pain, can Akon strike lightning twice?

In ’07 the Ringtone Rules! Totally Dude!

iphone_custom_ringtone.jpg

2007 was undeniably the breakout year for the “Ringtone” artist.  Labels are actually readjusting their marketing to push these artist as opposed to the more developed artist who rely on heavy lyrical content to keep the registers ringing.  Nah, that was out in ’06 when the homie Nas told you Hip Hop Is Dead.  Now the new face of Hip Hop is the Ringtone artist, and here are the leaders of that new school!  AT&T released their list for the top shottas of ’07…

1.  Shop Boyz – “Party Like a Rockstar”
  2.  Mims – “This Is Why I’m Hot”
  3.  Soulja Boy – “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”
  4.  Nickelback – “Rockstar”
  5.  Akon – “Don’t Matter”
  6.  T-Pain – “Buy You A Drank (Shawty Snappin)”
  7.  Hurricane Chris – “A Bay Bay”
  8.  Sean Kingston – “Beautiful Girls”
  9.  Huey – “Pop, Lock & Drop It”
  10. Fergie – “Big Girls Don’t Cry”

Editor’s Note: By no means are we suggesting that just because an artist ends up on this list, they aren’t “real” artists.  We are just identifying that this is the new face of a dying industry…and ringtone sales is what his kept the music industry from completely falling on its face, so the game really needs to applaud the ringtone artist for creating a new market.
