Update: Apple to Pay $3 Billion for Dr. Dre’s Beats Electronics after Further Review of the Company’s Streaming Service
Update: via NBC
The deal is expected to close in the fiscal fourth quarter. Apple said it will pay $2.6 billion in cash and another $400 million that will vest over time.
Founded by rapper and producer Andre Young (aka Dr. Dre) and music mogul Jimmy Iovine, Beats Electronics is a key vendor in the premium headphone market. Apple reportedly began talks to buy the company in early May. Both Young and Iovine will join Apple as part of the deal.
“Iovine and Dre are kindred souls of Apple,” Apple CEO Tim Cook told CNBC in an interview.
Beats’ profit margins in the headphone market may be substantial. A pair of its high-end headphones retail for as much as $450, but production costs across the brand run only about $14 a pair, according to The New York Times. Apple said the deal would add to earnings in fiscal 2015.
As I stated on other blog posts about Billboard’s anonymous sources (stating there was a snag in this deal because of the Tyrese/Dr. Dre premature viral video announcement), was pure bullshit. No way that video would affect a deal of this mangnitude and Billboard and its sources were reaching.
via NY Post
Apple’s biggest deal in its history just got a little cheaper.
The tech titan is expected to announce its acquisition of Beats Electronics this week — at the slightly reduced price of $3 billion, The Post has learned.
A report in the Financial Times earlier this month tipping the deal put the price at $3.2 billion.
That may have been the case, but negotiations between Apple CEO Tim Cook and the company co-founded by Dr. Dre were not helped by a leaked report that had Beats Music with just 111,000 subscribers to its streaming service in March.

Congressman Al Franken fires letter to Jobs about iPhone ‘tracking your every movement’ feature
Are we really surprised that Steve Jobs is Big Brother? Every aspect of this society we are being followed and watched by some evil force so get used to it.
via Arstechnica
Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) wants answers. Security researchers today revealed the existence of a file on iPhones and on their computer backups that logs detailed cell phone triangulation data—and has ever since iOS 4 was released last summer. The information is stored unencrypted by default, and is simple to access. That announcement led Franken to fire off a two-page letter (PDF) today, asking nine pointed questions of Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
The letter concludes with a list of questions.
- Why does Apple collect and compile this location data? Why did Apple choose to initiate tracking this data in its iOS 4 operating system?
- Does Apple collect and compile this location data for laptops? Continue reading

Judge allows jailbreaking of iPhone apps
via CNN
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — IPhone users can now legally hack their phones to download applications that aren’t in Apple’s App Store.
The U.S. Copyright Office, a division of the Library of Congress, has authorized several new exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), one of which will allow mobile phone users to “jailbreak” — or hack into — their devices to use apps not authorized by the phone’s manufacturer. The new rules will be published on Tuesday in the Federal Register.

[video] Gizmodo finds lost iPhone 4G (Steve Jobs is Pissed!!!)
Source: Huff Post
Apple’s lost is Gizmodo’s gain. Check out how they came up on the next iPhone 4G (and yes Steve Jobs is pissed).
Details below:
via GIZMODO
You are looking at Apple’s next iPhone. It was found lost in a bar in Redwood City, camouflaged to look like an iPhone 3GS. We got it. We disassembled it. It’s the real thing, and here are all the details.
What’s new
• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

Steve Jobs introduces the new ‘iPad’
via NY Times
All of us use laptops and smartphones now. The question has arisen lately: is there room for a third category of device in the middle?
The new device will have to be far better than the laptop and smartphone at doing important things: browsing the Web, doing e-mail, enjoying and sharing photographs, watching videos, enjoying your music collection, playing games, reading e-books. Otherwise, “it has no reason for being.”
Apple’s answer: the iPad.
It looks like, well, a big iPhone, pretty much as anticipated.
Apples sends invites to reporters to “come see our latest creation”

Yes folks — the rumors are true. Apple is holding an event on January 27th to show off something the company is calling their “latest creation.” Hair standing on end? Good. The proceedings will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, and will get underway at 10AM Pacific. We’ll be there live — as usual — covering every little second of the action… so get ready!

Eminem sues Apple & Aftermath Records?
Now can somebody explain to me how this works? How could this stuff go on without Aftermath clearing Eminem’s songs before they gave permission to Apple to post it on iTunes? Somebody is getting fired quick! Read story below:
via Yahoo
DETROIT – Eminem‘s music publisher wants a bigger slice from Apple.
Eight Mile Style LLC and a co-plaintiff, Martin Affiliated LLC, are suing Apple Inc., claiming they never authorized the use of 93 songs in a downloadable format on Apple’s popular iTunes service.
The non-jury trial is expected to start Thursday in the rapper’s hometown of Detroit, unless a settlement is reached Wednesday with the help of U.S. Magistrate Judge Virginia Morgan.
Eight Mile also is suing Aftermath Records, which controls the recordings in question, saying it didn’t have the right to make deals on digital downloads.

Steve Jobs puts the LP into iTunes
Sorry No Beatles on iTunes
When this does actually happen it will be huge for the music industry, but right now it is just rumor. More below:
via Apple Insider
While the Sept. 9 date marks major events for both The Beatles and Apple, the timing is just a coincidence and does not foreshadow any announcements set for Wednesday, a new report claims.
Peter Kafka with MediaMemo cited “a source familiar with the band’s plans” in a story Tuesday, in which he debunks the ongoing rumors that the world’s most famous rock band would see its catalog debut on Apple’s iTunes Music Store.
“If you’re trying to convince people to spend $16.99 for a remastered copy of the White Album,” Kafka asked, “or as much as $250 to play along with the band’s ghostly avatars, why offer a competing product from Apple at the same time? Nor do I see Steve Jobs expressing much interest in coordinating his marketing announcements with the likes of Viacom.”

Is This The Apple Tablet?
French gadget/Apple site Nowhere Else posted this photo overnight, suggesting it could be Apple’s (AAPL) tablet computer
. (Which is now not expected to launch until next year.)
We’re open to the idea, and it definitely seems like the size and shape that an Apple tablet would take — a big iPod touch. But, of course, could easily be fake.
