Freeway, Beanie Sigel Talk Islam, Religious Practices
via HipHopDX
It’s been no secret that rappers Freeway [click to read] and Beanie Sigel [click to read] practice the religion of Islam. As Muslims, the two have been part of a growing community in Hip Hop, which includes the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Brother Ali
, and Q-Tip. However, despite their ties to Islamic faith, it is rare to hear Freeway or Sigel talk about it, albeit a reference or two in verses.
With that said, a transcript of a 2008 interview from a few years back written by Adisa Banjoko, a noted scholar and co-founder of the Hip Hop Chess Federation, has surfaced in Illume magazine. In it, both Freeway and Sigel speak adamantly about their faith.
Freeway, who converted when he was 14-years old, stated the growth of Islam has not been confined to the subculture of Hip Hop. “It’s not just confined to Hip Hop. Islam is one of the fastest growing religions right now.” Continuing, he explained the appeal that led him to becoming a Muslim. “If you read The Qur’an and the authentic hadiths (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad) you can get the answers to any question. It’s beautiful. If you ask a Christian about their religion -The Father, Son, Holy Ghost thing- they can’t really give you no answers. In Islam the answers are right there. They come to you with proof. They are not just telling you something. They are backing it up with proof.”
[video] SK THROWBACK- WHAT WE DO- Freeway feat Beanie Sigel & Jay-Z
This is the first installment of SK THROWBACK‘s which will be a blog dedicated to revisiting those tunes that made an imprint on our consciousness when they dropped. There are so many songs that are part of our musical archive, we thought it would make sense to dig in the virtual crates and pull some of these memories off of YouTube and put you onto GAME.
I choose to set it off with WHAT WE DO by Freeway because I had the honor of being the studio with YOUNG CHRIS last night and I bore witness to a creative process that I can only describe as pure genius. When JAY-Z said he doesn’t write his rhymes on paper, but instead in his head, he transformed a whole generation of lyricists who ditched the pen and relied on the mind to scribe their rhyme. YOUNG CHRIS is one of those talents and Freeway also comes across as one of those unique talents that you can honestly say carved his own lane with his own style and his rhyme pattern was always on automatic fire (was he coming off the top of the dome?)
[video] Roc-a-Fella Funk Flex Freestyle Pt.7-KICK IN THE DOOR
Damn, who would’ve ever thought that the Death of a Dynasty would leave such a looming vacuum in Hip Hop? The ROC was on their A-Game in ’01 before Nas came through and crushed their building, but those days are behind us and we need a crew of this caliber back in the booth, for the sake of the craft. Not to take a shot at Nahright, but I pulled this clip and right above it was this doo-doo freestyle from Asher Roth and Kid Cudi, two of the supposed Freshman of ’09…according to XXL. If this is what the game got to offer in the New Year, then Hip Hop is headed back to the cemetery.

While Beanie Sigel’s one time rival Gillie Da Kid recently backed out of an upcoming “Brotherly Love Concert” due to schedule concerns, the Broad Street bully has landed another former nemesis to headline the concert. The Lox’s Jadakiss will join Sigel and other Philadelphia rappers on stage during the concert, which is being presented by Sigel and Nike ACG.
Sigel and Jadakiss engaged in an infamous feud that started after Jadakiss accused Philadelphia rappers of stealing his style in published interviews in 2001.
Jadakiss, who claimed his words were misquoted, was still on the receiving end of a mixtape diss from Sigel. Continue reading

Beanie Sigel Performs for Philly NASCAR Event
via SOHH
Philadelphia rappers Beanie Sigel, Freeway and Young Chris have joined forces with Sprint and Motorola for Urban Youth Racing School’s 3rd annual Grand Prix of Philadelphia Celebrity Race (last) weekend.
The event will serve as a platform for youth to learn more about the popular sport and help them take an initiative to become more involved with the school’s programs. With the intent to expand into the hip-hop community, founder Anthony Martin stressed the school’s importance.
“There are a lot of African-American kids interested in NASCAR and the racing industry, but don’t know how to go about getting involved,” Martin said in a statement. “The UYRS was founded in 1998 to fill that gap. Over 2,000 students have graduated from our program with the knowledge of racing, marketing, and sponsorship within the racing industry.” Continue reading

More Rap News : Beanie Sigel Back in Jail
Culminating what has been a horrendous week for the hip hop community with various cases of false accusations, shootings, and convictions, Philly rapper Beanie Sigel has been thrown back in jail by the judge for failing to adhere to his strict parole guidelines.
Still cant believe that Jay Z is letting an above average, borderline legendary MC like Beanie suffer after he repeatedly stuck up for Jay when every rapper and his momma was attacking him and his credibilty. Sigel deserves better.
Authorities said Sigel, whose real name is Dwight Grant, gave a false urine sample to probation officials on Feb. 29 and also tested positive five times earlier this month for controlled substances, including Xanax and Percocet.
Guess like Lil Wayne he can’t put down that Purple Rain, shame.

Beans Becomes State Property for One Day
The Broad Street Bully Beanie Sigel was promptly imprisoned for one day following his second probation violation. Sigel well also have to sweat it out in a halfway house for six months as well as see his probation get extended by 18 months. Bean’s can be heard on Whoo Kid’s radio show the other day boasting that he was laying low in anticipation of his probation finishing up in weeks. The judge is citing an unauthorized trip to Atlantic City and association with a felon as grounds upon which he is violating the Philly rapper. The 33 year old Roc-a-Fella artist could’ve recieved up to three to nine months in prison for the violation. The judge acknowledged Beans recent community work that was done alongside Bill Cosby recently, but added “If they’re looking at you as a role model, you’ve got to do the right thing,” according to U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick. For more on these breaking developments CLICK HERE
Editor’s Note: All of this comes on the heels of Beans putting up lackluster numbers for his latest effort, The Solution that Beans claims was under promoted. His stint in a halfway house effectively minimizes any chance Beans had of promoting his album and blowing life back into the project.
Sigel Offers a “Solution” to Philly Crime
Roc-a-Fella recording artist Beanie Sigel made a STOP THE VIOLENCE PSA which is currently airing in his hometown of Philly. The Broad Street Bully speaks in depth about his intentions on curbing the rampant crimewave that has registered 300 plus murders this year in the City of Brotherly Love. For the critics who claim Beans is the inspiration for the teen’s violent ways, he offers this PSA as a solution. He also speaks on his recent Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam release, The Solution.
