The Virginia gubernatorial race took an ugly turn this past weekend when a prominent endorser for Republican Bob McDonnell mocked the slight stutter of Democrat candidate Creigh Deeds.

At a rally for McDonnell’s campaign, Sheila Johnson was taped discussing the importance of communication skills in the state’s next governor.

“We need someone who can really communicate,” she said. “And Bob McDonnell can communicate. The other people that I talk to, especially his o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-opponent… could not articulate what needed to be done.”

BET apologizes for Drake and Lil Wayne Performance

This was an epic fail for BET and once again they prove that those in charge are idiots to the tenth degree.

BET has expressed remorse over a performance by Lil Wayne, Drake and Young Money Records that involved underage girls during songs “Best I Ever Had” and “Every Girl.”

The songs, which have overt sexual references, were performed during the Sunday BET Awards ’09 show as a bevy of young girls danced on stage. The group of girls consisted of Lil Wayne’s daughters and her friends.

In an exclusive statement, BET has responded to the criticism and the public outcry over the segment.

“BET Networks deeply regrets the performance by Young Money at the BET AWARDS ’09 (featuring Lil Wayne, Drake, Gudda Gudda and Mack Maine),” a BET representative told AllHipHop.com exclusively. “Elements of the performance were unplanned and should not have happened.”

The Biggest Boss bangs a left and goes religious on Curtis. Will ‘The Game’ Get Another Inning or is this the Ending?

the_game via LA Times

This week, the third season of “The Game” (8:30 p.m. Fridays) will come to an end aiming to answer several questions. Will Derwin (Pooch Hall) and Melanie (Tia Mowry) finally get married, or will the baby he’s expecting with his ex Janay (Gabrielle Dennis) sabotage their plans? Will Malik (Hosea Chanchez) let his newfound family loyalties get in the way of his game on the field, and off? Will Tasha (Wendy Raquel Robinson) finally find love with Rick Fox (playing himself)? Will Jason (Coby Bell) and Kelly (Brittany Daniel) acknowledge that their divorce was a mistake?

And most important, can “The Game” afford to have loose ends?

Later this month, the CW will announce whether it intends to renew the show, which follows the stars of the San Diego Sabers football team and their better halves, for a fourth season. Last month it was reported that, in an effort to save the show from cancellation, creator Mara Brock Akil was repitching it to the network as an hourlong dramedy, more in keeping with the CW’s new direction.

Not for those with weak stomachs.  He held on to this purposely during the election as to not hurt Barack Obama, because the media would have found a way to connect Obama to this fiery speech.  Do people really want to hear this now or since we have a new president and we have to start anew is this the old way of making people aware?

Please people we need comments on this. I don’t care what is your gender, race, or creed. Don’t be a pussie speak out!!!!

Lil Wayne Takes Home Top Honors at BET Awards

via Hip Hop Dope

Lil Wayne was named lyricist of the year and Russell Simmons was honored as a hip-hop icon at this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards taped on Saturday in Atlanta.

The New Orleans rapper, who was nominated for 12 awards, was also named MVP of the Year and the Alltel Wireless People’s Champ at the ceremony, which was hosted by T-Pain instead of scheduled host, comedian Katt Williams.

The show featured a hip-hop matriarch medley that included MC Lyte, Yo-Yo, Salt-n-Pepa. DJ Khaled, Young Jeezy, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes, Big Boi, Lil Wayne, Fat Joe, Birdman and Rick Ross took home the award for Best Hip-Hop Collaboration for “I’m So Hood (The Remix).”

T.I. also made this year’s show. The Atlanta rapper was scheduled to headline last year’s ceremony, but was arrested hours before the event on federal weapons charges after he was caught trying to purchase semi-automatic guns and silencers. T.I. pleaded guilty earlier this year and is scheduled to be sentenced in March. Continue reading

BET Cancels Rap City, End of an Era

via SOHH

Popular hip-hop music video program “Rap City” has ended its run on BET after 21 years on the network.

While SOHH first heard about the rumor last week, BET has announced the official word on their website earlier today. According to their Sound Off blog, “Rap City” will be replaced by “The Deal” hosted by DJ Diamond Kutz.

The new hour long series will consist of old and new elements from “Rap City.” Hip-Hop videos will continue to play but now they will be accompanied by pop-ups with facts on the given artist/song. The Booth, which was a staple on “Rap City” for artists to showcase their freestyle skills, will also remain a segment on the new series.

More than just a place for hip hop videos, Rap City gave fame to several hosts throughout the years, the first of which was Chris Thomas in 1989. He was followed by Hans Dobson, Prince Dejour and Joe Clair who debuted as host in 1994. Leslie Segar (a.k.a “Big Lez”) shared hosting duty with Clair from 1994 to 99. Continue reading

LOS ANGELES – BET entertainment chief Reginald Hudlin, who boosted original programming at the channel known for music videos and reruns, is leaving the company, BET Networks said Thursday.

Hudlin is returning to his “entrepreneurial roots” as an independent producer, according to an internal memo Thursday from BET Chairwoman and CEO Debra Lee that was released publicly by BET.

BET executive Stephen Hill, who’s in charge of music programming and talent, will serve as interim entertainment president during the search to replace Hudlin, Lee said. Continue reading

BET finally starts a weekly news program

It seems that B.E.T is trying to branch out and broaden their programming. This is great news for the critics of B.E.T who were sour since a regular news programming was cut out a few years back. More info below:

Jeff Johnson is gearing up to host a new program called "The Truth with Jeff Johnson" on B.E.T

NEW YORK (AP) – BET starts a weekly news program on Friday described as a cross between Keith Olbermann and Bill Maher with a black perspective.

Called “The Truth with Jeff Johnson” and airing at 11 p.m. on Fridays, the program stars a BET personality who has also been an activist for the NAACP and People for the American Way. Its debut is timed for the Democratic National Convention.

BET, the most-watched network aimed at blacks, will also air Barack Obama’s speech accepting the Democratic presidential nomination on Aug. 28 live, just like its competitor TV One. Neither network, however, is airing John McCain’s acceptance speech at the Republican convention the next week.

Besides election coverage and commentary on the week’s news, Johnson said he wanted “The Truth” to address topics like the use of vouchers for private schools and health issues particularly relevant to African Americans.

BET has been criticized frequently in the black community for cutting back on news-oriented shows. But Johnson said much of the criticism comes from people who don’t watch BET, and don’t see how news has been incorporated into existing shows. BET was one of the few networks to cover Darfur in depth, he said.

“I have been encouraged by the direction we’ve been going in,” he said.

BET Loses Sponsorship Over Content

BET takes a L

via HipHopDX

BET suffered another setback this week when several advertisers pulled spots from popular network programs due to images of violence and profanity.

According to Paul Porter of media watchdog group, Industry Ears and CNN, Proctor and Gamble, Pepsi and General Motors pulled their ads from Rap City and 106 & Park after the companies viewed “The Rap on Rap,” a content analysis of BET and MTV programming.

The study found that children were exposed to violence, profanity or obscenity once every 38 seconds.

T.I. “Choose To Vote” PSA

via Wooohah

Technically this PSA by T.I. is not part of his prison sentence but you can be sure his PR agency was all over this to try and shed his “gun-toting-thug” image and become a positive force. Why? Well that’s what happens when you sign a three-picture movie deal. Hollywood obviously likes to sign hip-hop stars but they all have a commercial/broad quality to them. There is a reason studios have been so hesitant to pick up Suge Knight’s reality show. The thuggery is just too real.

Judge Orders NYPD to Open Up Stop & Frisk Records

via BET

Even though the NYPD has argued that opening its database to Civil Rights activists puts its officers at risk, N.Y. Judge Marilyn Diamond said the department should black out the details and hand over the records to the New York Civil Liberty Union in 60 days.”The NYPD has not offered any reason why the petitioner should be denied access to the same database which it has already shared with other outside organizations,” Diamond argued. “The information could “give New Yorkers a better understanding of the extent to which the NYPD targets communities of color and particularly African-American males for aggressive stops, even though they’re doing nothing wrong,” New York Civil Liberties Union executive director Donna Lieberman added. More than 50 percent of the 500,000 New Yorkers pulled over last year were black. And only in the first quarter of this year, 145,000 drivers in New York have been stopped.

Madonna Pimpin’ Her Way Onto BET

Madonna pimpin\'

WTF? There she goes again, making a mockery of the culture but some of my fellow bloggers are just lapping it up, thinking this is some sort of compliment because Madonna is “acknowledging” us. Well, note to baby-bloggers this woman was embraced by Hip Hop some two decades ago when mainstream wasn’t feeling her loose-in-the-boots ass. She swang eps with several rappers so she knows we exist. This is not pandering, this is insulting. She got the fur and chains on because she intends on going on BET to pimp the culture, get it?

Procter & Gamble Is Asking Consumers Should It Pull Advertising From BET?

[Source: HustleKnockin.com]

It appears the fallout is being felt after a report was released confirming people’s worst fears, that BET is bombarding youth with explicit imagery. Now Procter & Gamble, one of the networks biggest advertisers has set up a hotline number to gauge whether customers share those sentiments. Apparently advocacy group Enough Is Enough put the press on P&G and now the “people” are expected to play “judge.”

One of the nation’s largest advertisers, Procter & Gamble, is soliciting input from consumers whether it should continue advertising on MTV and BET.

The packaged-goods company is taking calls at an 800 number. Once dialed, callers are advised they have two choice(s) regarding advertising on the two cable networks: press one if they want P&G to make changes in its advertising, or press two to indicate support for continued advertising on the networks. Input will be forwarded to the proper P&G executives, the recording indicates.

B.E.T, M.T.V Feeding Teens With Sex and Violence : Study Finds

B.E.T Founder Bob Johnson & CEO Debra Lee who are taking stiff criticism for the amount sex and violence teens are bombared with from their network.

A new report accuses BET and MTV of showing excessive sex and violence during hours that teens are viewing. The report reinforces heavy criticism that has been lodged against these networks for years. Recent episodes from cult favorite Boondocks were banned due to their harsh criticism of B.E.T CEO Debra Lee and even referrred to the network as the Black Evil Network.
Full story below:

“What BET and MTV are offering to children on these three programs is full of offensive and vulgar content, the likes of which cannot yet be found on broadcast television,” said Tim Winter. President of the Parents Television Council, who conducted the study in partnership with the Enough is Enough Campaign.

MTV CEO Judy McGrath has never publicly addressed the violent and sexual images on MTV networks<

Black Panther Comes To B.E.T…

Source: Nahright

Little is known about the Black Panther comic book character and hope fully that will change as B.E.T has added a new series set to debut in 2009. Lets also hope that the series is given a chance to build an audience and not yanked if it is not an instant hit. Don’t blow this B.E.T!

For some reason (probably because he’s black), Marvel character Black Panther has never quite gotten his due. Since being created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and debuting in a 1966 issue of Fantastic Four, he’s never achieved the marquee status of his peers, despite being the first major black superhero. Wesley Snipes tried for 15 years to turn the character into a movie, but all we got is three Blade movies instead.

Well now, BET executive Reginald Hudlin—who also started writing the Black Panther comic for Marvel in 2005—is bringing the icon to the small screen. In early 2009, a prime-time animated Black Panther series will debut on the BET network. And if the series is a success, you can bet the live-action movie (which John Singleton was recently rumored to be directing) won’t be far behind. After the jump, check out the trailer from 2006’s Ultimate Avengers 2: Rise of the Panther, one of BP’s rare TV appearances.

Bob Johnson Agrees With Ferraro Racial Comments About Obama…

Source:Charlotte Observer

Bob Johnson founder of B.E.T, has once again taken swipes at Sen. Barack Obama. Speaking to the Charolette Observer newspaper he says that Sen. Barack Obama would not be his party’s leading candidate if he were white.

What I believe Geraldine Ferraro meant is that if you take a freshman senator from Illinois called `Jerry Smith’ and he says I’m going to run for president, would he start off with 90 percent of the black vote?” Johnson said. “And the answer is, probably not… .”

Bob Attacks Barack for Hillary’s Civil Rights

Billionaire BET founder Bob Johnson attacked Barack Obama’s campaign’s credibility regarding Hilliary’s recent statements regarding Martin Luther King and questioned his previous stint as community organizer in Illinois. In what many are saying was an ‘ill advised speech,’ Bob stated he was insulted by the characterization by rival Barack Obama’s presidential campaign of her remarks about the civil rights movement.” This is ironic that Bob Johnson would come out questioning Barack knowing that he himself made tremendous amounts of money pushing what many consider to be stereotypical images, wanton misogyny, and disbanding the news division including firing Tavis SmileyWay to go Bob!! James Prince strikes back at BET

While some would consider it an honor to share some TV time with America’s most infamous gangsters, Rap-A-Lot CEO James Prince is taking exception to his depiction in a recent episode of BET’s hit-show American Gangster.  The segment dedicated to Gangster Disciple’s leader Larry Hoover featured Prince and an associate with Hoover during a prison visit.  During the commercial for the episode the word “killer” was flashed across the scene when this picture appeared.  Prince is disputing the use of the decade old photograph and accusing BET’s parent company, Viacom of trying to align him with the negative portrayal of Hoover.  For the full story on this, click HERE.
