Detroit — Mertilla Jones recounted the horrific death of her granddaughter this evening outside the home where the 7-year-old was killed by a police bullet.
“They blew my granddaughter’s brains out. They killed her right before my eyes,” Jones said. “I watched the light go out of her eyes. I seen it.”
DETROIT — Basketball legend Dave Bing was elected Tuesday as Detroit’s mayor through the end of the year, sweeping the incumbent from office in the city with myriad problems.
“The real work starts now,” Bing said to loud cheers during his victory speech.
“What we will bring … is efficiency, transparency, honesty and integrity back to the mayor’s office,” he said.
With all but two of 629 precincts reporting, Bing had 52.3 percent of the vote, or 48,951 votes, to 47.7 percent, or 44,703 votes, for Ken Cockrel Jr. Both are Democrats.
Bing, 65, will be mayor through 2009, serving the balance of the term that belonged to Democrat , who resigned in September and went to jail after admitting he lied during a civil trial to cover up an affair with his chief of staff.
Bing must run again in the regular Aug. 4 nonpartisan primary and win the Nov. 3 general election to hold the mayor’s seat for a full four years.
The founder of steel manufacturer The Bing Group announced his run for mayor the day after Kilpatrick stepped down as part of pleas to two criminal cases.
Cockrel, 43, was City Council president before Kilpatrick’s departure automatically promoted him to the mayor’s office. He’ll go back to that job now.
Bing praised Cockrel for running “a hard-fought campaign” and said he looked forward to working together when Cockrel returns to the council.
About 15 percent of the city’s registered voters participated. A proposal to revise the city charter also was on the ballot and passed overwhelmingly.
“I don’t like either one; it’s like tossing a coin. But I’ll give Bing a chance,” Bonnie Brookslee, 78, said after voting at King High School, east of downtown. “Cockrel went along too much with Kwame when he was on the council.” Continue reading
Over 3 million people tune into the syndicated court TV show, “Judge Mathis,” every day. But Judge Greg Mathis is not reaching troubled youth through television. As a result, Mathis has teamed up with Hollywood filmmaker Matty Rich (The Inkwell, Straight Out of Brooklyn) to create an original videogame for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC called Mathis “Detroit” Street Judge.
Rather than going the traditional TV-licensed root of turning a courtroom format virtual, Rich and Mathis are crafting a third-person perspective, open world shooter set in the ghettos of Detroit. Players will step into the role of convicted felon La-Ron Washington, who’s been released from prison early due to overcrowding but has two strikes hanging over his head. La-Ron is given one last chance; he must stay out of trouble, perform community services and avoid negative street influences and temptations. One more strike and La-Ron gets a life sentence from Judge Mathis.
But out on the street, the entire Detroit underworld wants him dead for the alleged murder of a crime boss – a murder he didn’t commit.
“I know that the most popular game out there is Grand Theft Auto IV and I know that a lot of young video game players like the (virtual) action of criminal activity,” said Mathis. “In this game, we’re giving them that action and adding the option of living a mainstream, successful life. They have the combination of an action-packed criminal activity, as well as the opportunity to turn their lives around and pursue a level of success, as I did after leaving my background in the world of crime.” Continue reading
He’s the King of Detroit and they’re the Kings of Rock. Sounds like royalty will be in the building next month as Eminem is scheduled to induct Run-DMC into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 4. Em was announced as a participant in the festivities late Friday afternoon (March 20).
According to The Associated Press, Em will join Jimmy Page, the Rolling Stones’ Ron Wood, Flea and Smokey Robinson as presenters during the ceremony, held at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland.
The reclusive rapper is slowly starting to re-enter the public consciousness. Recently, his label, Interscope, announced the rapper would release his forthcoming project, Relapse, on May 19. Slim Shady’s protégé, 50 Cent, told MTV News it was his idea for Eminem to also put out a second album before the year’s up.
“You can’t ask for more excitement from a hip-hop perspective than two Eminem albums,” 50 said. “One is great. It’s a treat. But the second one is exciting. Continue reading
Emerging from the Wayne County Jail situated across an alley from Detroit Police headquarters, a slimmer and shaggier Kilpatrick paused in the doorway of the Andrew C. Baird Detention Center around 12:30 a.m.
While his new attorney, Willie Gary, said Kilpatrick would have nothing to say, the 38-year-old ex-mayor looked around with a somewhat bewildered expression. Through the thick beard that replaced his formerly closely cropped whiskers, he flashed a smile. Then he plowed toward a waiting Chevrolet Suburban as a phalanx of large and nattily attired escorts tried to form a wall against reporters and photographers.
This guy has nine f**king lives. Just goes to show you how strong his political ties are especially since his mother is a Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, but she now claims this is effecting her possible re-election to Congress.
It is a crying shame if he brings his mother down with him and tarnishes her career in the process. Break down below :
DETROIT (Reuters) – Embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick won a legal victory on Monday when a judge blocked the city council from holding hearings intended to oust him.
Wayne County Circuit Judge Robert Ziolkowski ruled the Detroit City Council does not have authority to move forward with proceedings to remove Kilpatrick under the city charter.
Kilpatrick, 38, still may be removed by Michigan’s Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a former ally, who has scheduled a hearing on September 3.
It seems that Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick of Detroit just cannot stay out of some news making controversy these last few months.
After almost being forced out of office for an alleged affair with a subordinate and its cover-up, he has another swelling on his hands that should be sure to be the final blow his administration. The latest below:
DETROIT — Michigan State Police troopers are investigating a possible assault by Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on a deputy accompanying an investigator for the Wayne County prosecutor Thursday at the home of the mayor’s sister, Sheriff Warren Evans said.
Evans said the 6-foot-4 mayor, a former star football player at Florida A&M University, allegedly pushed a sheriff’s deputy and knocked him into the female investigator, who was working for Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. The officers were attempting to serve a subpoena on Bobby Ferguson, a city contractor and close friend of Kilpatrick.
DETROIT (AP) — A man charged with murder at age 11 who spent the rest of his childhood in custody was arrested Friday on a drug charge after undercover officers allegedly caught him selling at a gas station, police said.
Nathaniel Abraham, 22, was picked up about 1 a.m. in his hometown of Pontiac and charged with possession with intent to deliver narcotics, said a police sergeant there, Brian McLaughlin.
As a baby-faced sixth grader, Abraham shot and killed a stranger who was leaving a Pontiac convenience store, according to testimony. When he was arrested in his classroom, his face was painted for Halloween. He was convicted of second-degree murder at age 13 in the slaying of Ronnie Greene and was released from juvenile custody in January 2007.
After being unceremoniously shut down by the City Council while awaiting trial for perjury charges the embattled Hip Hop Mayor invokes the Lord as the source of his problems. Addressing a crowd of worshippers on Saturday (4/20) at the Fellowship Chapel Church in Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick told the crowd: “I’m not being whupped by the devil; I am being punished by my God. I know that my disobedience put me in the situation I am in.” He made this unprecedented move at the Detroit Manpower Movement event which was “aimed at getting more black men involved in volunteer efforts.”
Editor’s Note: Now, even though that was a “righteous” gesture to make in the spirit of taking responsibility for one’s action, I can’t honestly say that it was the best legal move to make, I mean after all he is pleading “not-guilty” to the charges.

Though Spike TV’s DEA show has keep me glued to the tube every week, there has not been any formal reports as to whether it is a break-out hit.
Spike TV has ordered six one-hour episodes of the new original narrative series which delves into the seedy world of drugs and shows you there is definetly “no honour amongst thieves”. The show’s back drop is Detroit which boasts the highest murder rate in the country.
Welcome to the fourth installment of Hip Hop’s Hottest Honeys. We are shining the light on Absolutely Amber who is absolutely an eye full. This enterprising video model has been holding it down on the net driving traffic to her site(s) AbsolutelyAmber and AddictedToAmber and um, even Governor Patterson could see how one can become Addicted to Amber. Hailing from the “D” (Detroit) this bodacious bombshell has appeared in numerous videos and graced the pages of quite a few publications. So needles to say fellas, and ladies its gonna be a long, hot weekend and we couldn’t think of a better way to spend it than with some Amber.
In an embarrassing political manuever the Detroit City Council silenced the Hip Hop Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. He entered the Council chambers and attempted to propose a budget, only to be rebuffed by the Council President Ken Cockrel, who informed Kilpatrick that members voted to not hear from the Mayor. The session was quickly adjourned and a visibly embarrassed Kilpatrick responded, “this could have been done in my office.”
Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff Christine Beatty have been brought up on perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice charges, stemming from lying under oath about carrying on an extramarital affair until details emerged in the form of text messaging. The Council previously voted 7-1 for the Mayor to resign, loudly voicing their displeasure with his leadership. This is just the latest dust-up in the deteriotating career of Kilpatrick, once dubbed the Hip Hop Mayor. CLICK HERE for more on this embarrassing story.
This is not looking too good for Hip Hop’s unofficial mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. He has been charged with obstruction of justice for testimony given about sexually explicit text messages between him and a former aide. The Mayor has denied all charges and promises to be fully cleared at trial.
It seems that politicians are going down left and right for their personal and private relationships. Does having an affair warrant somebody unable to do their job? Tough question and one that has been around for decades. Click here and here for full story
Detroit’s “Hip Hop” Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has landed himself in a pile of mess amidst allegations that he lied under oath about an alleged affair he was having with his Chief of Staff, Ms. Christine Beatty. On Jan. 30 he made a passionate plea to Detroit residents in a televised address from an empty church, accompanied by his wife who sat by his side. Without directly implicating himself, Kilpatrick admitted to the people that he was, “accountable” for the accusations being hurled his way. Apparently, text messages surfaced dating back to ’02 and ’03 that contradict the statements Kilpatrick made under oath. In one the Mayor wrote, “I’ve been dreaming all day about having you all to myself for 3 days. Relaxing, laughing, talking, sleeping and making love.” The Chief of Staff has recently resigned but Kilpatrick is determined to remain Mayor for the rest of his term. Prosecutors are weighing whether or not to bring charges against the embattled Mayor. A conviction for lying under oath carries a stiff fifteen joints in the penile.
