[video] X-Men: Days of Future Past (Official Trailer 3)

Looks like this might be the best one so far in the franchise.

Based on the comic of the same name, the Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is sent 50 years into the past to save the X-Men after sentinels start killing them off in the present.

The trailer shows the Wolverine as he tries to assemble all of the mutants together to prevent that from happening.

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past — to save our future.

[Op-Ed] This X Doesn’t Mark the Spot: The Wolverine Movie Lacks the Series’ Socially Significant Themes

Big comic book and scifi movie extravaganzas can make big points about society, sometimes even catching the zeitgeist, as we saw with 2008’s The Dark Knight. The X-Men series has been at the forefront of this, exploring the changing nature of humanity, our relationship with technology, and the concept of otherness in a mass society. And doing it amidst unique powers, cool tech, and some bracing action.

Unfortunately, most of that which intrigues one intellectually and moves one emotionally is missing in the fourth entry in the franchise, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

It’s not a bad movie. (And it does provide an amusing explanation for one of the most famous events of the 1970s.) In fact, it is shaping up as a big hit. It’s a pretty good action flick, but the movie lacks the intellectual depth and soul frequently found in the X-Men series. I was entertained. But it’s going to fall far short measured against the Star Trek and Terminator movies coming later this month in the cultural significance sweepstakes.

The basic plot seems borrowed, at least in part, from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1985 action vehicle, Commando. Somebody is killing members of Wolverine’s old special ops team, and his old commanding officer visits him to discuss it. Bad things ensue.

Like the reboot of Batman, this picture is an origin story. But it explains, well, nothing, before jumping into the action. Continue reading

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Comic book movie “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” slashed its rivals at box offices over the weekend with a $160 million worldwide debut, leaping to No. 1 on ticket charts in a solid start to Hollywood’s summer.

The action adventure, starring Hugh Jackman as the heroic Wolverine who wields long claws as his weapons, raked in $87 million in the United States and Canada and helped push total ticket sales just slightly ahead of the same weekend last year, according to tracking service Hollywood.com Box Office.

Wolverine Headed to Theaters Next Spring

Riding on the back of the success of the Billion dollar grossing X-Men trilogy, Marvel Comics is gearing up to release a full length movie about Wolverine to theaters in May of 2009.  Hugh Jackman will be reprising his role as the furry superhero as he traces his shady origins.  You can expect guest appearances from a slew of characters, namely Wolverine’s nemesis Sabretooth.  According to USA Today, Jackman will be taking on producing duties as well to bring the backstory to life of a character that he has grown to love.

“I think one of the reasons the X-Men took off is that it connected in a way nobody saw,” Jackman says. “They’re mutants with powers. But they’re also outcasts for being, and everyone connects with that on some level. And who wouldn’t want the power to get back at the people who ostracized you? I became a fan of Wolverine like everyone else. That’s why I keep holding on to the character.”
