LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Almost 36 million people are living as slaves across the globe with an index on Monday listing Mauritania, Uzbekistan, Haiti, Qatar and India as the nations where modern-day slavery is most prevalent.

The Walk Free Foundation, an Australian-based human rights group, estimated in its inaugural slavery index last year that 29.8 million people were born into servitude, trafficked for sex work, trapped in debt bondage or exploited for forced labour.

Frog that changes color worshipped as God in India

FROG_

via Daily Sun

A FROG that constantly changes colour is being worshipped as a GOD in India.

Hundreds of curious followers flock to Reji Kumar’s home every day to pray and ask for miracles.

Now one of the country’s top zoologists plans to study the rainbow frog. But Reji, 35, who keeps the creature in a glass bottle after finding it while out watering plants, is afraid it might CROAK first.

He said: “My one problem is that this frog does not appear to eat. I keep trying to feed it but it doesn’t eat anything. I don’t know what else to give it.”

The frog was a dazzling WHITE colour when Reji, from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, first spotted it.

Then it changed to YELLOW and had gone GREY by the time he got it home. Continue reading

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ wins eight Oscars, including best picture

LOS ANGELES: “Slumdog Milllionare” swept the Academy Awards with eight prizes, including for best picture, capping an unlikely trajectory for a movie about a young man’s rise from the slums of Mumbai to television stardom.

Heath Ledger posthumously won the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in “The Dark Night” and Penélope Cruz won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her portrayal of the fiery ex-wife of an amorous artist in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”

“Has anybody ever fainted here?” Cruz said in accepting the award. She then dedicated the award to her parents, and told how as a child she watched the Oscars, calling her art “the world’s universal language.” And then in Spanish, she thanked the people of Spain, saying she shared the award with her homeland.

Ledger’s family was on hand to accept the award, with his father, Kim, and other family members addressing the ceremony. Ledger died in his Manhattan apartment on Jan. 22, from what was ruled an accidental drug overdose.

Overall, Sunday evening’s Oscar show was something of a struggle between the ambitions of a producing team — headed by the veteran film producer Laurence Mark and the filmmaker Bill Condon — that aimed for an evening full of surprises and the apparent determination of 5,810 voters in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to bestow honors largely where they were expected to go.

A much-discussed new format for the show found Hugh Jackman, the evening’s host, performing a comical tribute in song to the five best picture nominees as the event began at 5:30 p.m. in the Kodak Theater here. He then wandered into the audience to tease the nominees, telling Mickey Rourke that “If you win, we do a 20-minute delay.” Continue reading

Don’t call us Dogs, say Slumdog Protesters in Cinema Rampage

via Times Online

Armed police guarded cinemas in eastern India today after slum dwellers ransacked a picture house showing Slumdog Millionaire because they didn’t like the use of the word “dog” in the title. slumdog_

Several hundred people rampaged through the cinema in Patna, capital of the eastern state of Bihar, on Monday and tore down posters advertising the film. They said the title was humiliating and vowed to continue their protests until it was changed.

The protest was organised by Tateshwar Vishwakarma, a social activist who filed a lawsuit over the title last week against four Indians involved in its production – a lead actor, the music director and two others.

“Referring to people living in slums as dogs is a violation of human rights,” said Mr Vishwakarma, who works for a group promoting the rights of slum dwellers. We will burn Danny Boyle [the film’s British director] effigies in 56 slums here.”

The case will be heard in a Patna court on February 5, according to police.

Kishori Das, another activist, said: “We are in touch with like-minded organisations across India to take the issue on a large scale.” Continue reading

Protesters attack MTV office in Mumbai, India

via Breitbart

I thought these dudes was peace loving, and were strictly non violent.

MUMBAI, India (AP) – Police arrested 70 Sikh protesters after the MTV music channel’s office in western India was vandalized over posters showing a Sikh girl massaging a man, officials said Tuesday.

On Monday, protesters smashed windows with rocks, tore banners and damaged furniture in the MTV office in Mumbai, India’s financial and entertainment capital, police inspector Raju More said.

The protesters said the posters, which promoted the reality show “On the Job2,” offended Sikhs, More said. Sikhs comprise more than 2 percent of India’s 1.1 billion people.

Police later released the protesters on bail, he said.

Satish Maneshinde, MTV’s attorney in Mumbai, called it an unfortunate incident. He said no one was injured in the attack.

Maneshinde said MTV would consider the protesters’ demands to remove the posters.

Indian village proud after double “honor killing”

The bodies of Sunita Devi (L), 21, and her partner Jasbir Singh, 22, lie on the ground after they were killed by villagers in an \"honour killing\" in Ballah village in the northern Indian state of Haryana May 9, 2008. Growing economic opportunities for young people and lower castes in Haryana have made \"love marriages\" more common, experts say, and the violent repression of them has risen in tandem as upper caste Jat men fight to hold on to power, status and property. With the recent ruling in California concerning gay marriage and the droves of people who are lining up on both sides of the issue seems a wee bit trivial once you hear this story about a pregnant heterosexual couple who were murdered by their own family because they were from the same village which is considered “incest” though they have no blood relation. [The pics are pretty graphic but tell the story of this tragedy.]

They punched and kicked her stomach as she called out for her sleeping boyfriend “Jassa”, 22-year-old Jasbir Singh, witnesses said. When he woke, both were dragged into waiting cars, driven away and strangled.

Their bodies, half-stripped, were laid out on the dirt outside Sunita’s father’s house for all to see, a sign that the family’s “honor” had been restored by her cold-blooded murder.

“From society’s point of view, this is a very good thing,” said 62-year-old farmer Balwan Arya, sitting smoking a hookah in the shade of a tree in a square with other elders from the village council or panchayat. “We have removed the blot.”

Smoke Can Snuff Out Billions In Future

Tobacco could kill 1 billion people in the 21st century unless governments act now to dramatically reduce smoking, the World Health Organisation said today.  The UN agency said no country in the world was doing all it could to curb tobacco use, which it estimates will kill 500 million people who are alive today.  It called on all nations to adopt a six-pronged strategy to dissuade people – especially women and young people – from smoking and to help them quit.  Raising taxes to as high as 75% or more of the pack price would be the single most effective strategy, the WHO said. Higher taxes would also provide funds to counter tobacco industry marketing tactics.”While efforts to combat tobacco are gaining momentum, virtually every country needs to do more,” said Margaret Chan, the WHO director general.  A 7 yr old Chinese boy smokes a cigarette in downtown Bejing.  As many as 100 million Chinese men currently under age 30 will die from tobacco use.  In India, about a quarter of deaths among middle-aged men are caused by smoking,” its report said.   Continue reading
