Fascinating and informative doc. Be sure to watch the whole thing to see the exchange between the head of Empire Bail Bonds and a man snagged for not reporting to court.
The US is the only first-world country that commercializes bail. The for-profit industry rakes in more than $2 billion annually in revenue. Most criminal defendants can’t pay the full bail amount and must either stay in jail or pay a 10 percent fee to secure a bond, which they won’t recoup even if found not guilty.
Nothing can stop a message that needs to be heard. As many examples of literature have shown since the 20th century, not even prison. CLEVELAND – The death of R&B singer Sean Levert in Cleveland has led to a proposed new policy that provides more flexibility in giving inmates their anti-anxiety medication.
The member of the 1980s R&B trio LeVert and son of lead O’Jays singer Eddie Levert died March 30 after becoming ill at the Cuyahoga County jail in Cleveland.
The jail administrator and a jail doctor proposed the change to allow inmates to get their prescribed medication as soon as their prescriptions are verified.
Levert’s widow, Angela Lowe, filed a wrongful death lawsuit in June accusing jail officials of neglecting his medical needs.
The lawsuit says Levert was not given the prescription Xanax that he had brought to the jail when he started serving a sentence for failure to pay child support.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Khloe Kardashian’s next dose of reality will involve the county jail.
The reality show star and youngest daughter of the late attorney Robert Kardashian admitted during a July 3 court hearing that she violated her probation stemming from a 2007 drunken driving arrest, according to court records.
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge ordered Kardashian, who’s featured on E! Entertainment Television’s “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” to surrender to authorities on Friday and serve up to 30 days in jail.
Incarcerated rap star Foxy Brown will be released this Friday and aims to get back on track with a new album and reality show that will chronicle her rise back to prominence in the rap game. After serving eight months of a year long sentence for probation violation, she still has some legal cases to remedy before she is totally in the clear.
“She did every single minute of her bid in jail and she did it under the most severe conditions,” Williams said, according to Billboard.com. “They had her on continuous lockdown just because she is a celebrity. They were trying to break her spirit.” (Stephen Morello, deputy commissioner of public information for the city’s correction department, told the site that Foxy was placed in protective custody per her request, noting that some inmates request that status “because their prominence or other circumstances might make them targets”).
