[video] Travis Scott “Piss on Your Grave” (ft. Kanye West)

“Is you not entertained?”

The Apple Music exclusives just keep on coming, this time arriving in the form of the ‘Piss On Your Grave’ music video. The long time Kanye-collaborator Nabil takes the director reigns as we watch Kanye, Travis, and a masked Mos Def romp around a forest. Aligned with Kanye’s past two videos, Only One and All Day, the video takes on a minimalist approach employing a single background and no props. Trading off vicious verses and donned head-to-toe in Yeezy attire, Travis and Kanye look fierce as they threaten to piss on your grave.

Lupe Fiasco accepts Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) Rap Battle Challenge, Takes Shot at Drake

UPDATE: MOS backed out like I thought.

Let’s hope this really goes down and not just a bunch of talk. We have seen this type of talk before and nothing materialize so I am gonna remain skeptical. Lupe’s answer after the cut .

“Me, Black Thought and King Los versus ANYBODY,” the 41-year-old Hip-Hop mainstay screamed. “I don’t care who you tell…Red Bull Music Academy, put up [$1 million dollars on the contest] and we’ll give our winnings to charity and take your money too. I’m tired of these dudes pretending like they dope. You alright but relax. The dope ni**as that think they dope, you ain’t as dope as you think.”

An Obituary For ‘Conscious Rap’ by Omar Burgess

Check out this dope piece written by Omar Burgess about ‘the death of conscious rap.’ I love his assessment and think you guys should read this.

via Hip Hop DX

I was listening to Til The Casket Drops—not necessarily mad at it, but definitely wishing it was more like Hell Hath No Fury—when I found Malice quoting scriptures and talking about watching Madagascar with his kids in a way that didn’t sound preachy or forced. I started wondering if Malice and Pusha T had stumbled upon some bastardized form of “Conscious Rap.” The Clipse have voiced their distaste for rhymes with heavy-handed messages over the years. But if this is the new standard for what’s conscious, I’m either glad Conscious Rap, as my generation knew it, is dead or interested to see who else will toss a few more shovels full of dirt on the casket [no pun intended].

Mos Def Thinks Jay-Z Should Defend His ‘Greatest Rapper Alive’ Title

mos-def1

My hat off to Mos for being one of the last men standing in this game. In addition to dropping a solid CD and calling these dudes to the mat, I highly commend him for keeping it Moorish on the back of his CD. Noble Drew would be proud, now watch Jay make all kinds of excuses, but homie you been called the f*ck out!

When Mos Def visited Angie Martinez’s New York radio show Tuesday to promote his new album, The Ecstatic, neither had any idea that would be promoting the most spectacular MC battle ever.

In March, a video hit YouTube that featured Mos challenging Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and others to a battle. Martinez asked him about the video. Mos admitted it was a candid moment in front of friends.

“I don’t have to address it, but what I said, I will stand by,” Mos said, adding that his comments were in regards to an article he saw (ours?) naming Jay-Z the greatest MC alive. “Friend or foe, I love you all, but I’m saying if you saying that you’re better than Slick Rick, who is still very alive and well, you saying that you’re better than Rakim, you saying you’re better than Black Thought — and the people making that claim have never been in a position to have to defend that in an open forum.”

“But isn’t it all up to what you like?” Martinez asked. Continue reading

Dumb Rappers Need Teaching: Mos Def sought in Vegas over camera scuffle

When we will dumb rappers stop assaulting camera men?

picture-42

LAS VEGAS (AP) –
Mos Def was being sought by police on an arrest warrant stemming from a scuffle with a photographer at a fashion trade show last August, authorities and the alleged victim said Thursday.

“I had no idea who the man was,” said Volker Correl, 60, a Los Angeles-based photographer who said the 35-year-old rapper and actor, whose real name is Dante Terrell Smith, ripped his camera from around his neck Aug. 26.

Correl said he was credentialed to represent a trade publication, and was taking photos at the Men’s Apparel and Garment Industry Convention in Las Vegas when he was allegedly attacked. He said the last four photos before his camera was broken clearly show Smith reaching toward him.

“The last shot was his hands in front of the lens,” Correl said.

Investigators expected Smith would turn himself by the end of the week to face a warrant charge of felony robbery and misdemeanor malicious destruction of property, Las Vegas police spokesman Ramon Denby said.

Mos Def’s publicist, Carleen Donovan in New York City, did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

The warrant was issued Tuesday, said Michael Sommermeyer, a court spokesman.

Correl said he received a cut on his left hand in the scuffle, and that two Las Vegas Convention Center security guards retrieved the camera. Repairs to the camera cost $178, police said in court documents.

Robbery can carry a sentence of probation or two to 15 years in state prison. A conviction for misdemeanor destruction of property less than $250 can bring up to six months in county jail.

Smith built a following as an underground hip hop artist in the 1990s, and has been nominated for Golden Globe, Emmy, and Grammy awards. He is the host of the award-winning HBO spoken word show “Def Poetry.”

Mos Def & Rihanna Onboard for Iceberg Slim Project

via SOHH
Mos Def, Rihanna, Macy Gray, Anthony Anderson and others have come together to star in the upcoming film adaption of late writer Iceberg Slim‘s classic, Mama Black Widow.
Set in the 1930s, the plot revolves around an African-American family’s migration from the racially tense state of Mississippi to the ghetto-themed underworld of Chicago, Illinois. Focused on lead actor Brian J White‘s character, “Otis Tilson,” the story emphasizes his difficulties in trying to keep his family together as they encounter alcoholism, prostitution, sexual deviation and racial injustice.
Directed by Darren Grant, the film will also star actresses Kerry Washington and Angela Bassett.
Rapper-turned-actor Ice-T will also be paying homage to the author by producing a documentary on Slim’s rise from pimp to established novelist.
“Iceberg Slim has been one of the most influential people in black culture,” Ice-T previously told New York Post. ” Few people know the story behind the man and it’s time that story is told.”
No release dates have been announced on either production as of yet. In related news, Uproar Entertainment will be re-releasing the Slim album Reflections originally produced in 1976 by David Drozen. The disc offers listeners a poignant and memorable look at Slim’s true life experiences. Continue reading

The Rap on Hollywood ’08

defsounds.jpg

The homies over at DefSounds have a blog about all the upcoming movies of the ’08 that feature rappers. Now all of a sudden rappers in movies is a hot topic being that one of the world’s most lovable rapper’s helmed the biggest movie of last year, that would be Will Smith in I AM Legend, thank you. And yeah, we still consider Big Willie Hip Hop!

mosdef.jpg

Editor’s Note: I noticed they left out Mos Def and his upcoming flick with Jack Black, Be Kind Rewind. Mos has also been billed to star in Next Day Air alongside Lauren London, Mike Epps and Donald Fasion. The flick centers around the delivery of bricks of cocaine to the wrong recipients and the pursuit that ensues. And another shout out to the homie Clyde over at ProHipHop who brought to our attention that Woohah has been running a series about the hottest Hollywood rumors dealing with possible roles for Common in the Justice League movie, possibly the lead Green Lantern and a certified role in the upcoming Angelina Jolie flick Wanted as well as the Night Watchman with Keanu Reeves. Also in production is Vapors a movie based on the Juice Crew. And let us not forget the homie Method Man in Meet The Spartans.
