[video] Phil Jackson speaks Lakers vs. Heat, Lebron Leaving Cleveland

I am always baffled by these former players who constantly critique Lebron for leaving Cleveland after fulfilling his contract after seven years and making that franchise a ton of money but never gave him one superstar to play with. Please get over it, he made a decision for himself and for anyone to say what and where he should of played is crazy. Of course had he would have come to play for your team that would have been different ehh? Let’s not forget that Kobe demanded to be traded after he was not given the proper supporting cast to make a championship run, and that Phil Jackson left the Bulls as well to coach in LA.

Gilbert Arenas Charged With Carrying ‘Pistol Without License’

Carrying a ‘Pistol Without License’ is what prosecutors have decided to charge Gilbert Arenas with after him and fellow teammate Javaris Crittenton drew guns on each other after a gambling dispute that was supposedly a joke. Check out below to see how another multi-millionaire athlete is going down for the count:

via Huff Post

Kenneth L. Wainstein, Arenas’ attorney, issued the below statement:

“This afternoon, Gilbert Arenas voluntarily met with federal prosecutors at the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and detectives of the Metropolitan Police Department to explain the circumstances surrounding the presence of his unloaded firearms at the Verizon Center last month.

From the outset of this incident, Mr. Arenas has been fully cooperative with the investigation. He acknowledged his possession of the guns when questioned by Washington Wizards team officials; he immediately offered and relinquished the guns to Wizards security personnel; and he had me proactively reach out to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and make an immediate self-disclosure about the guns.

[video] Brandon Jennings Becomes Youngest Player To Score Fitty

Source: Fansided

Best performance of the season thus far. Too bad it was against the Warriors.

via Fansided

Jennings went to Italy for a year, got this tattoo upon his return and then was late to his own NBA Draft. It looked like he was about to be the latest disaster in a long line of disasters for the Bucks. Then, out of absolutely effin’ nowhere, Jennings becomes the best rookie since LeBron James?

Former NBA Antoine Walker star Blows Thru $100 Million, Creditors On His Back for $4 Million

This is not a strange story at all. Most NBA players, nearly 60 percent, go broke after 5 years after their playing days are over. Obviously they are not getting great advice about how to manage money at that magnitude.

I have posted an in depth story previously about this phenomenon previously about how the multiple luxury cars, baby momma’s,inexperienced family and entourage members running multi-millions athletes into the ground. Here is another shocking story of how former NBA’er Antoine Walker literally blew thru 100 million dollars and is being chased down for $4 million dollars from creditors in addition to being arrested in Vegas for check fraud:

“[Walker] liked to move in an outsized entourage; his mother estimates that, during his playing days, he was supporting 70 friends and family members in one way or another. And speaking of his mother, he built her a mansion in the Chicago suburbs, complete with an indoor pool, 10 bathrooms, and a full-size basketball court. […]
Living at the Bishops Forest condominium complex in Waltham during the Celtics season, Walker turned the pavement surrounding his home into a virtual luxury car lot — two Bentleys, two Mercedes, a Range Rover, a Cadillac Escalade, a bright red Hummer. Often, the vehicles were tricked out with custom paint jobs, rims, and sound systems at considerable added expense. He also collected top-line watches — Rolexes and diamond-encrusted Cartiers.”

(AP Summary) – Michael Jordan, maybe the greatest of them all, is taking his place alongside basketball’s other greats. Jordan was being enshrined in the Hall of Fame tonight, an honor that follows all the championship rings and MVP trophies he collected during his career. He joins David Robinson and John Stockton, a pair of his 1992 Dream Team teammates, and coaches Jerry Sloan and C. Vivian Stringer in a distinguished class.

“It all started with that little round ball. I think if you take that away from any of us, I’m pretty sure we would have struggled in life, because that’s how much the game meant to us,” Jordan said. The enshrinement ceremony took place at Springfield’s Symphony Hall, because Jordan was too big for the Hall of Fame. The move to the other building allowed for a crowd of about 2,600, more than double what the Hall can accommodate.

NBA Shocker: Yao Ming foot injury maybe career ender

Definitely a downer for the NBA on the whole if they lose Yao.

via Yahoo Sports

As the NBA draft approached, the grim truth about Yao Ming’s(notes) broken left foot hung like an anvil over the Houston Rockets. The fear isn’t that he’s just lost for next season, but longer.

The Rockets and Yao’s reps are frightened over his future, and the concern is the most base of all: Does Yao Ming ever play again?

“The realization has hit them that this is grave,” one NBA general manager said.

For now, the Rockets have privately told league peers it could be a full season before Yao might be able to return to basketball. Multiple league executives, officials close to Yao and two doctors with knowledge of the diagnoses are describing a troubling re-fracture of his navicular bone. Three pins were inserted a year ago, but the foot cracked in the playoffs and isn’t healing.

“It sounds like he’s missing most of next season, if not the entire 82 games,” one league executive who has had recent discussions with the Houston front office told Yahoo! Sports. “That’s all that [the Rockets] will concede quietly, but they know it’s probably much worse.”

After Yahoo! Sports first reported the severity of Yao’s injury, Rockets team physician Tom Clanton conceded franchise’s fears to the Houston Chronicle.

“At this point, the injury has the potential for him missing this next season and could be career threatening,” Clanton said. “One of the things we are trying to get is a consensus opinion on that, to make certain there is no option we are overlooking that would provide an earlier return or would be an option for treatment that he would prefer rather than doing additional surgery.”

Houston general manager Daryl Morey refused comment on Monday and a team spokesman said the Rockets will not have further comment until Yao undergoes additional medical tests.

There’s no reason for the Rockets to disclose the severity of the injury, nor the uncertainty over Yao’s future. Before the Rockets confirm a dire diagnosis, they plan to send him to three more specialists this week, a source said. For now, the Rockets have season tickets and sponsorships to sell.

Carmelo Anthony is hoping to take his Denver Nuggets to the NBA Finals by beating the Los Angeles Lakers. But aside from his basketball career, he’s also trying to get thing in the music business going as well.carmeloanthony

The basketball superstar recently inked a deal with Atlanta based label Block Entertainment — responsible for the success of Yung Joc, Gorilla Zoe, and the Boyz N Da Hood — for a joint venture with his own Kross Entertainment imprint.

Via the deal, Anthony’s label will focus on breaking their Atlanta artist Diego Ca$h, who has made a name for himself on the mixtape circuit thanks to collabos with heavyweights like DJ Drama and DJ Smallz.

“I am privileged to be in a position where I am able to work with such seasoned individuals in the music industry,” Ca$h said. “I plan to continue to create quality rap music while furthering my brand as a rap artist.”

Anthony is well aware that crossing over from sports to music isn’t the easiest, even with his celebrity status.

“By joining forces with Block Entertainment, I am looking forward to a great business relationship,” the Nuggets stars said. “In addition to long term musical success, this movement will mark new territory in not only the Atlanta market but all over the country as well.” Continue reading

Dave Bing, NBA Great, Elected Detroit’s Mayor

Detroit Mayor

via HuffPost

DETROIT — Basketball legend Dave Bing was elected Tuesday as Detroit’s mayor through the end of the year, sweeping the incumbent from office in the city with myriad problems.

“The real work starts now,” Bing said to loud cheers during his victory speech.

“What we will bring … is efficiency, transparency, honesty and integrity back to the mayor’s office,” he said.

With all but two of 629 precincts reporting, Bing had 52.3 percent of the vote, or 48,951 votes, to 47.7 percent, or 44,703 votes, for Ken Cockrel Jr. Both are Democrats.

Bing, 65, will be mayor through 2009, serving the balance of the term that belonged to Democrat Kwame Kilpatrick, who resigned in September and went to jail after admitting he lied during a civil trial to cover up an affair with his chief of staff.

Bing must run again in the regular Aug. 4 nonpartisan primary and win the Nov. 3 general election to hold the mayor’s seat for a full four years.

The founder of steel manufacturer The Bing Group announced his run for mayor the day after Kilpatrick stepped down as part of pleas to two criminal cases.

Cockrel, 43, was City Council president before Kilpatrick’s departure automatically promoted him to the mayor’s office. He’ll go back to that job now.

Bing praised Cockrel for running “a hard-fought campaign” and said he looked forward to working together when Cockrel returns to the council.

About 15 percent of the city’s registered voters participated. A proposal to revise the city charter also was on the ballot and passed overwhelmingly.

“I don’t like either one; it’s like tossing a coin. But I’ll give Bing a chance,” Bonnie Brookslee, 78, said after voting at King High School, east of downtown. “Cockrel went along too much with Kwame when he was on the council.” Continue reading

LeBron wins first MVP award, source tells AP

via MSNBC

CLEVELAND – Unstoppable at both ends of the floor this season, LeBron James is the NBA’s Most Valuable Player.

James, who led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a team-record 66 regular-season wins and the top overall seed in the playoffs, will receive the award Monday, a person with knowledge of the choice told The Associated Press. James chose Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, his alma mater, for the presentation, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement has not been made.lebron-james

The Cavaliers announced a “major” news conference for 4 p.m. at the school, but did not give the reason.

James is the first Cavaliers player to win the award. He averaged 28.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.2 assists this season, his sixth as a pro. He also finished second in voting for defensive player of the year, making him perhaps the league’s most dominant two-way player since Michael Jordan.

At 24 years, 106 days on the final day of the regular season, James is the youngest player to win the award since Moses Malone (24 years, 16 days) in 1978-79. Wes Unseld was 23 when he won it in 1968-69.

James vied all season for MVP honors with the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant and Miami’s Dwyane Wade. The three played on the U.S. gold medalist Olympic team last summer and seemed to upstage each other nightly.

Focused right from the start, the 6-foot-8, 250-pound James sharpened his already formidable skills this season. Continue reading

Sports Illustrated Illustrates How (and Why) Athletes Go Broke

Man with empty pockets.

via RealTalk NY

What the hell happened here? Seven floors above the iced-over Dallas North Tollway, Raghib (Rocket) Ismail is revisiting the question. It’s December, and Ismail is sitting in the boardroom of Chapwood Investments, a wealth management firm, his white Notre Dame snow hat pulled down to his furrowed brow.

In 1991 Ismail, a junior wide receiver for the Fighting Irish, was the presumptive No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. Instead he signed with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts for a guaranteed $18.2 million over four years, then the richest contract in football history. But today, at a private session on financial planning attended by eight other current or onetime pro athletes, Ismail, 39, indulges in a luxury he didn’t enjoy as a young VIP: hindsight.

“I once had a meeting with J.P. Morgan,” he tells the group, “and it was literally like listening to Charlie Brown’s teacher.” The men surrounding Ismail at the conference table include Angels outfielder Torii Hunter, Cowboys wideout Isaiah Stanback and six former pros: NFL cornerback Ray Mickens and fullback Jerald Sowell (both of whom retired in 2006), major league outfielder Ben Grieve and NBA guard Erick Strickland (’05), and linebackers Winfred Tubbs (’00) and Eugene Lockhart (’92). Ismail (’02) cackles ruefully. “I was so busy focusing on football that the first year was suddenly over,” he says. “I’d started with this $4 million base salary, but then I looked at my bank statement, and I just went, What the…?”

Before Ismail can elaborate on his bewilderment—over the complexity of that statement and the amount of money he had already lost—eight heads are nodding, eight faces smiling in sympathy. Hunter chimes in, “Once you get into the financial stuff, and it sounds like Japanese, guys are just like, ‘I ain’t going back.’ They’re lost.” Continue reading

Shaq ‘tweets’ at halftime of Suns game

shaquille-twitter

via MSNBC

PHOENIX – Halftime “tweets” seem to be the latest NBA fad.

Suns center Shaquille O’Neal posted a note on his Twitter feed before a home game against Washington on Saturday night, suggesting he planned to post to the popular social networking Web site during halftime.

And sure enough, a brief message was posted on Shaq’s feed before the third quarter.

“Shhhhhhh,” it read.

It was the same message O’Neal delivered when asked about his Twitter plans before the game. When told Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry already knew about it, O’Neal bent over, leaned against the locker-room wall and groaned loudly, saying his plans were blown.

“I was going to do it and not get in trouble, then brag about not getting in trouble,” O’Neal said.

Gentry, when asked about O’Neal’s plans before the game, said he didn’t care.

“As long as he gets 25 (points) and 11 (rebounds), he can do whatever he wants. He can Twitter, Facebook, MySpace,” said Gentry, who also has a Twitter account set up by his daughter.

Last Sunday, Milwaukee Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva became an overnight Web celebrity after he posted a note, called a “tweet”, to his Twitter feed during halftime of his game against Boston.

“I stirred something up,” Villanueva said after Milwaukee’s 96-84 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night. “I’m a trend setter, I guess.” Continue reading

Kobe to Lead US Olympic Team after NBA Playoff Disappointment

Kobeth

We all most know how disappointing it was for Kobe Bryant, as he and his team fell short at the NBA championship. Well Bryant along with other basketball players LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, have a chance of even greater glory. The players will lead a U.S. Olympic basketball team, they will hope to do much better than the third-place they achieved in Athens four years ago, the team hope to bring the gold home from the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The team has already been doing will on an international level, but now it is hoped that they can show how improved they are at the Olympic Games, which will be held in Beijing on August 4. The team that the U.S is sending to China are both deep and versatile, these include Carmelo Anthony, Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Michael Redd, Tayshaun Prince among others.
