After Sony, Marvel Spider-Man Reboot Announced, Social Media wants Miles Morales #donald4spiderman

The people have spoken and have strongly stated Miles Morales or bust. Somebody get Donald Glover on the phone. Below I have posted some excerpts from a detailed article on the matter from the Verge.

via The Verge

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures brokered one of the biggest deals in cinema history last night. Going forward, Spider-Man will join Captain America and Iron Man as a proud member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

That this move is a game-changer cannot be understated. After slogging through a botched Sony reboot, audiences can finally expect Spidey, one of the most esteemed — and valuable — superheroes ever created, to take his rightful place beside the Avengers. As Marvel’s statement reads, “Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker’s story into the future.” There’s just one problem: With Andrew Garfield allegedly out, we don’t need Peter Parker at the movies anymore. We need Miles Morales.

Sony Pictures Exec. Amy Pascal Begs Public Not To Read Racist Emails

Screen Shot 2014-12-11 at 10.40.34 PM

This is a fascinating story that I hope you guys are paying attention to because this is just the beginning of impending cyber warfare against corporations the world over. They have made their demands known and will continue to pull off the veil of these multi-national corporations who have wielded unbridled power for far too long. I got my popcorn. Lastly, I hope that Amy wakes up and realizes that Al Sharpton’s influence is waning and doesn’t speak for us. Burn Hollywood burn.

DEADLINE: Did you apologize to the president?
PASCAL: I don’t know Barack Obama. I worked really hard for him in both of his campaigns. I am inspired by him. I…I’m embarrassed, deeply.

DEADLINE: Rev. Al Sharpton just came out with a statement highly critical of your comment. How do you react to that?
PASCAL: I know I screwed up. So I called him and we spoke. And we are going to try to use this as an opportunity to make things better.

Will Smith prepping for “Men In Black 3″

via Woooha

Will Smith x Men in Black. After the rousing success of Fast & Furious this past weekend (over $70 million at the box office this weekend) you can expect a flury of sequels to be greenlit by Hollywood studios in the coming months. And soon enough, there are talks at Sony Pictures that a Men In Black 3 is already in development with the original producers.

These talks were confirmed when Sony Pictures’ President confirmed they were reigniting the franchise and targeting a 2011 release date. That’s all good for Will but let’s just hope this doesn’t mean a Hancock sequel as well…or even worse…a Seven Pounds sequel.

SONY Introduces World’s Smallest HD Camera

via Engadget

The problem with Sony’s previous world’s smallest pistol-grip Full HD camcorder — the HDR-TG1 aka, the TG3E — wasn’t size, it was usability. So we’re happy to hear that Sony’s TG5 counts a tweaked UI among its updates. And although Sony doesn’t say in the press release, the TG5’s touch-panel looks far more sensitive (capacitive maybe?) than that of the previous generation’s finger bender.

The other improvements are GPS to geotag your media (assuming your software supports it), Navteq maps, improved image processing, smile shutter technology, and 16GB of built-in storage (up from 8GB) all riding inside a slightly smaller and lighter chassis. Other specs remain unchanged: 1920 x 1080 AVCHD video, 2.7-inch touchscreen display, and a 10x optically stabilized zoom exposing a 2.4 megapixel CMOS sensor. Expensive? Oh most definitely: $1,000 starting in May. Check the video after the break.

41% Music Decline Helps Sony Profits Fall 95%

via Hypebot

Sony posted a whopping 95% decrease in profits last quarter compared to the same quarter last year. Gaming was was the biggest disappointment down 97%, but music did its part to contribute to the downward spiral.  Even when factoring out the expensive purchase of BMG’s half of the former Sony BMG, music profits declined 41% driven by a 22% decrease in sales.

Sony has avoided the recent wholesale staff cuts made by other labels favoring more targeted layoffs. But as losses mount and the world economy worsens, sources hint that Sony’s layoff scalpel could become a hatchet.

SONY and Toshiba Shares Fall Sharply

via NY Times

HONG KONG — Stocks in Japan’s leading electronics companies fell sharply on Tuesday amid reports that industry giants Sony and Toshiba will see an operating loss in the current financial year, as plummeting demand and a strong yen take their toll on

A person with knowledge of the matter, speaking anonymously because the information is not public yet, told Reuters that Sony may post an operating loss of about $1.1 billion in the business year that ends in March, in comments that echoed reports by several Japanese media on Tuesday.

If confirmed, it would be the first full-year loss for the maker of the iconic Walkman portable player and PlayStation 3 games console in 14 years.

Sony declined to comment on the report, but its shares fell 7.7 percent by early afternoon as investors worried that Sony’s third-quarter earnings announcement, due Jan. 29, could include nasty surprises as the economic environment continues to worsen.

Among other things, the company has said it would detail far-reaching cost and job cuts it announced on Dec. 9, as it looked to cut costs by ¥100 billion a year. Continue reading

SONY Uses Star Power to Unveil Cool, New Products at CES

via Reuters

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) – Sony Corp introduced on Thursday a bendable video screen, a Wi-Fi camera and eyeglasses that display movies, saying the industry must keep innovating in the midst of a severe economic slump.sony_goggles

The Japanese firm, which pioneered the Walkman and once dominated the high-end electronics marketplace, is hoping a swathe of new products will spur spending and lift its consumer division out of a business malaise.

On Thursday, Chief Executive Howard Stringer demonstrated a range of new devices at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, including a flexible OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen playing a video of singer Beyonce.

Sony in 2007 launched the world’s first OLED TV, which is slimmer, more energy efficient, and offers crispier pictures than liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs. The bendable OLED screen, which is still in the development stage, would offer flexibility in design, making possible such applications as wearable displays.

Stringer and Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks also demonstrated prototype eyeglasses with built-in video screens that can show full-length movies.

Besides Hanks, other celebrities who cameo-ed at Stringer’s keynote speech included R&B singer Usher and baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson, underscoring a unique business structure that combines the world’s leading electronics conglomerate and entertainment group under one roof. SONY Announces Massive Cuts

via BBC

Sony has announced plans to cut 8,000 electronics jobs – 5% of the division – as well as shutting 10% of its manufacturing sites. The company said the jobs would be cut by April 2010, but did not say in which countries the staff would go.

Sony said it would also cut at least 8,000 temporary and contract staff jobs in the same sector.

It said it had been trying to reduce production because of the downturn, but warned it still had to do more.

The news came as Japan said its economy had shrunk between July and September by much more than initially estimated.

The Cabinet Office said the economy had shrunk at an annual rate of 1.8% in the quarter, compared with its original estimate of 0.4%. Continue reading

HP and ASU Demo Bendable, Unbreakable Electronic Displays

Damn, these dudes got the drop on SONY who were planning to pop this off

via Engadget

Well, what do you know? Nearly four years after Arizona State University opened its very own flexible display center comes this, a prototype device that’s purportedly easy to manufactur, easy on the environment and practically as strong as Thor. HP and ASU have teamed up to demonstrate the fresh e-displays, which are constructed almost entirely of plastic and consume far less power than traditional computer monitors.

The “unbreakable displays” were crafted using self-aligned imprint lithography (SAIL) technology invented in HP Labs, and while we’d love to see this in a pliable laptop at CES 2009, we suspect it’ll be a few years yet before these slither out to the commercial realm.

Self-Censorship Hits Big Bucks Videogames Over Religion

via Breitbart

Violence may still be rife in the world of videogames, but when it comes to religion, caution remains the watchword in the big bucks business.

Sony’s decision this month to delay one of the most anticipated games in the history of PlayStation, LittleBigPlanet, to avoid offending Muslims, is the latest sign that videogame-makers are playing prudence when it comes to religion.

LittleBigPlanet, which has received rave reviews, is finally being released next week after a fortnight-long delay because of concerns that a track in the background music might be found offensive.

As copies began to be shipped off to distributors, game developers woke up to the potential for trouble following a post on a Sony public Internet forum stating that a song by Mali artist Toumani Diabate included two expressions from the Koran that could cause offence.

The forum user, who identified himself as “yasser”, said “Muslims consider the mixing of music and words from our Holy Quran deeply offending (sic).”

Responding on the game’s website, Sony said: “We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence this may have caused.” Continue reading

Sony puts its Future in the Hands of Sackboy

via Times Online

Sony PlayStation, the video games console, hopes to reverse its flagging popularity with a little-known British creation: a rag doll called Sackboy.

He is the hero of Little Big Planet, which Sony has described as the biggest game in PlayStation’s history.

It was scheduled for release this Friday, but this was pushed back after it was discovered some background music included lines from the Koran, offending some Muslims.

In Little Big Planet, players first customise the careworn toy, then control it to run and jump through a colourful world straight out of a child’s imagination but designed to appeal to gamers of all ages.

Sony PlayStation believes the simple concept created by the British games designer Media Molecule, a small up-and-coming developer based above a bathroom shop in Guildford, Surrey, has hit on the next big idea in gaming. This is because the product has an added twist – players can design their own level in rich detail, and share it with friends over the internet. Continue reading

SONY Preps Flexible OLED Display Screen

Sony just barely updated the PSP but designer Tai Chiem is already thinking about the next iteration. His design calls for a flexible OLED display that can be conveniently rolled. An electric charge powering the display stiffens it while providing near bezeless prime real estate for gaming. Stereo speakers on either side double as a jog wheel and camera control. He also envisages Sony finally implementing two joysticks. Pipe dream or not, it’s sexy and lives up to its name; it don’t get any more portable than this.

SONY Prez Says No PS3 Price Cut This Year

via Game Daily

Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai has reiterated that his company will not be lowering the price on PS3 hardware this holiday season, despite price pressure from the competition.

While some analysts believe that Sony is running the risk of losing too much ground this holiday if they don’t cut the price on PlayStation 3, Sony has maintained all along that their primary focus for now is on profitability. The cheapest Xbox 360 (Arcade SKU at $199) is 200 dollars cheaper than the PS3 at $399, but Kaz Hirai, president and group chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, has once again insisted that PS3 pricing will not change this year.

“The answer is yes, if you’re asking, ‘Are these the prices we’re going with this Christmas?'” he told the Financial Times.

Hirai continued by saying that although the PS3 is still more expensive than the other consoles on the market, it offers a better value for consumers because of its inclusion of the hard drive as standard and its Blu-ray drive. “When you really compare apples to apples, then I think we have a very good value proposition,” he said. Sony Researchers Create Flexible LCD Screen

via Telegraph UK

Researchers have demonstrated a flexible television screen which could result in people folding up their computer and putting it in their pocket.

The design could be used for television and posters, as well as computers, while it could also pave the way for the development of newspaper display technology which would allow readers to upload daily news to an easy-to-carry display contraption.

The concept demo was unveiled by researchers from Sony and the Max Planck Institute in Germany who believe “Rigid television screens, bulky laptops and still image posters are to be a thing of the past”.

It is all organic, flexible and transparent with an extremely low energy requirement, while it has an almost unlimited viewing angle and high efficiency.

Sony Pictures Entertainment to Make and Release Filmed Productions Using 4K Digital Technology

CULVER CITY, Calif., Oct 02, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Sony Pictures Entertainment will use 4K digital technology in the making of most of its filmed productions, it was announced by Sony Electronics.
“With the industry moving rapidly to embrace the improvement in quality that digital cinema can offer, we believe that 4K resolution gives audiences the best seat in the house,” said Gary Martin, president of Production Administration and Studio Operations for Sony Pictures Entertainment. “That’s why we will be making more of our filmed productions at full 4K resolution, scanning at 4K, using a 4K workflow process, and releasing a 4K DCP to theaters. The crisp and vibrant images provided by 4K are the only way to ensure that audiences both today and in the future will really be able to see the full range of what we can capture on film.”
Sony Pictures has already released the summer blockbuster “Hancock” in 4K, with the motion picture grossing more than $600 million at the worldwide box office to date. Movies released in 4K can play in theaters with either 4K or 2K projectors. Among the next motion pictures to be digitally imaged in 4K by Sony Pictures, and available for 4K distribution, are expected to be “2012,” “Salt,” and “The Green Hornet,” with more titles to be announced.

GPS Enabled Games Coming to PSP

via Engadget

Only John Koller knows how serious John Koller, Sony’s senior marketing manager for PSP, was when mentioning that GPS-enabled games could eventually hit the PSP, but he definitely threw it out there. Speaking about the forthcoming GPS add-on for the PlayStation Portable, Koller stated that said module “changes the dynamics of GPS but also changes the way developers think about games on PSP, because you can start integrating GPS into it.” He continued on by mentioning that Sony’s own first-party studios were “already looking at a number of things [involving GPS in games],” and concluded by asserting that a GPS game could land on the system as early as next year. Considering just how long we’ve been waiting for the add-on, we’re not holding our breath on the titles.

Toshiba Unveils World Tiniest HD Camera, Well Sort Of

World\'s Smallest HD Camera

Talk about not wasting anytime! The other day we posted the world’s smallest HD Camera from Sony [HERE] but now it appears Toshiba is making a run on the record by throwing out a three chip (CCD) 1080i broadcast-quality camera that is measuring in a staggering 1.6 inches squared!!
Too bad though, this gizmo is being utilized only by the pro’s for now, and it has to hook up to some sort of contrapment which technically rules it out as the “smallest” operational camera on the market, because technically it ain’t on the market. It can shot up to 90 feet away and for now it will be destined to be used in reality shows. I guess we can be looking forward to HD quality sex tapes now instead of that crappy, grainy stuff of days of old. Sweet.

The joint got 8GB’s of memory and a 10x Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar zoom lens. The best part of the equation, its only $900!
