ROME – Director Ron Howard claimed Sunday that the Vatican interfered with efforts to get permits to shoot certain scenes of his “Angels & Demons” religious thriller in Rome — a charge the Vatican said was purely a publicity stunt.
The film, which stars Tom Hanks and is based on the best-selling novel by Dan Brown, has its world premiere Monday in Rome.
“Angels & Demons” combines an ancient secret brotherhood called the Illuminati, a papal conclave and a high-tech weapon threatening to destroy the Vatican.
At a press conference Sunday, Howard said he hadn’t sought cooperation from the Vatican based on the opposition he encountered filming “The Da Vinci Code,” another Brown novel that angered many Catholic leaders.
But he said the Vatican nevertheless exerted influence regarding his filming permits, and he was told it would not be possible even to shoot scenes in Rome that had churches in the background.
“When you come to film in Rome, the official statement to you is that the Vatican has no influence,” he said. “Everything progressed very smoothly, but unofficially a couple of days before we were to start filming in several of our locations, it was explained to us that through back channels and so forth that the Vatican had exerted some influence.”
“Was I surprised? No. Am I a little frustrated at times? Sure,” he said. Continue reading
Pope Benedict XVI has declared that condom use not only doesn’t slow down the spread of HIV/AIDS, but actually makes the pandemic worse.via Global Grind
“You can’t resolve [AIDS] with the distribution of condoms,” the pope told reporters on Tuesday aboard a plane headed to Cameroon, Africa, a continent ravaged by AIDS. “On the contrary, it increases the problem. [AIDS] is a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems.”
According to the New York Times, Benedict has never addressed condom use. Predecessor Pope John Paul II often proclaimed abstinence, not condoms, would prevent the deadly spread of AIDS.
The Roman Catholic Church rejects the use of condoms based on its teachings against artificial contraception.
Cool, a movie about the Illuminati vs. the Vatican, this is right on time, granted!

Wow, I had no idea that denial of the Holocaust is actually a crime…on the books!
CITY (Reuters) – World Jewish leaders told Vatican officials that denying the Holocaust was “not an opinion but a crime” when they met on Monday to discuss a bishop they accuse of being anti-Semitic.
The meetings, the first since the controversy over Bishop Richard Williamson, who denies the extent of the Holocaust, began last month, took place three days before is due to address a group of American Jewish leaders.
Williamson told Swedish television in an interview broadcast in January: “I believe there were no .” He said no more than 300,000 Jews perished in Nazi concentration camps, rather than the 6 million accepted by most historians.
Prasquier and Maram Stern, deputy secretary of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), held talks with Cardinal Walter Kasper, head of the Vatican office that handles religious relations with Jews.
“We want the Vatican to realize that by accommodating anti-Semites like Williamson, the achievements of four decades of Catholic-Jewish dialogue … will be put into doubt,” WJC President Ronald Lauder said in a statement.
“We now believe that our message has been understood. The controversial debate of the past three weeks has had a positive impact,” said Lauder, who did not attend the meetings. Continue reading

A Rome priest is fighting for his life after being stabbed in the neck and stomach by a deranged man who had just watched the film The Da Vinci Code on television.
Eyewitnesses said that Marco Luzi, 25, asked to see Father Canio Canistri, 68, parish priest at the church of Santa Marcella in the San Saba district on the Aventine Hill, and then attacked him with a knife hidden in a cloth. An elderly parishioner who came to the priest’s aid is also in serious condition.
A Peruvian childminder and a policeman were also injured as the assailant fled through a nearby park. Police said Mr Luzi, a former medical student with a history of psychiatric problems, had admitted watching the film version of Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code on television the night before the frenzied assault. LOURDES, France (AP) – Pope Benedict XVI urged ailing pilgrims to accept death “at the hour chosen by God,” reasserting the Vatican’s opposition to euthanasia on Monday at an open-air Mass for the sick.
Benedict administered the sacrament of the sick to pilgrims in wheelchairs and on gurneys, many bundled in quilts against the chill.
In his homily, the pope said the ill should pray to find “the grace to accept, without fear or bitterness, to leave this world at the hour chosen by God.” The Vatican vehemently maintains that life must continue to its natural end. Continue reading
Following the shock discovery, the man stormed into the local bishop’s office in Chioggia, near Venice, and demanded an explanation. Later police were called to calm him down.
Details of the incident in Chioggia near Venice emerged on Sunday in Italian newspapers and the local bishop Angelo Daniel has now confirmed that the adulterous priest has been sent to another parish for “reeducation”.
The 53-year-old priest was described as a specialist on the Bible and had been a good friend of the couple.
The husband, 39, and his wife, 37, have two children.
Bishop Daniel added: “I have always respected the priest in question and I will continue to respect him. You cannot discount all the good a person has done in their life just because of one mistake.”
OK, after the Vatican story I predicted they will be rolling an alien out in six months, well I was wrong. In three days they’ll be making a stab at it and if you’ve noticed the news has been inundated with alien-related news so perfect timing dude. Jeepers Creepers!!
A video that purportedly shows a living, breathing space alien will be shown to the news media Friday in Denver.
Jeff Peckman, who is pushing a ballot initiative to create an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission in Denver to prepare the city for close encounters of the alien kind, said the video is authentic and convinced him that aliens exist.
“As impressive as it is, it’s still one tiny portion in the context of a vast amount of peripheral evidence,” he said Wednesday. “It’s really the final visual confirmation of what you already know to be true having seen all the other evidence.”
VATICAN CITY (AP) – The Vatican’s chief astronomer says that believing in aliens does not contradict faith in God.
The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, says that the vastness of the universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth, even intelligent ones.
In an interview published Tuesday by Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, Funes says that such a notion “doesn’t contradict our faith” because aliens would still be God’s creatures.
The interview was headlined “The extraterrestrial is my brother.” Funes said that ruling out the existence of aliens would be like “putting limits” on God’s creative freedom.
Editor’s Note: Please take note of the increase in UFO sitings that have taken place this year. Texas, Arizona, Mexico and California have all reported seeing enormous crafts over their skies, some of them simultaneously so its ironic that the Church will go on record acknowledging the “possible” existence of outside intelligence. Expect contact sometime before November.

The Vatican has bad news for its flock around the globe; they are no longer the religious majority in the world. Muslims are. Even though they haven’t released hard figures yet the Vatican has confirmed that 19.2% of the planet pay homage to Allah, while only 17.4 % pledge their allegiance to the Pope. “For the first time in history we are no longer at the top: the Muslims have overtaken us,” Monsignor Vittorio Formenti told Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano.
The Census was according to figures compiled several years ago. It has been estimated that Catholics number 1.13 billion people throughout the world while it is believed that Muslims were topping in at 1.3 billion. Those numbers are no longer reflective of the reality but hard numbers are not being released.
If all Christians were counted under one banner, the Orthodox, Anglican, Catholic and Protestants then the numbers would swell to 2 billion people on Earth (33%) who call Christ their Savior. While it is noted that Muslims are believed to be outpacing Catholics due to higher birth rates it is also worth noting that Muslim conversion spiked after 9/11 and the War On Terror was implemented. Bush’s Crusade against Islam backfired and resulted in him boosting global membership instead.
